  • Hello, subscribers and Jeepers!
Today we review and install a Doorman Aluminum Oil Cooler in a Jeep Wrangler JKU.
As many of you are aware the 3.6 Pentastar liter oil coolers have been an issue since they were manufactured.
Hopefully, this aluminum aftermarket Doorman oil cooler solves the problem!
If you have any questions leave them bellow!

Overtightening the oil filter housing is what causes these to fail. I change my own oil and I'm careful not to overtighten it. Never had a single issue in the 7 years I've had my Jeep.

My mechanic told me over tighten is 85-90% the reason for failure, the rest faulty gaskets and warping. He has the same Jeep as me, and also never a leak.

Bought my 2012 new. I change my own oil and that's probably why I've never had an oil cooler failure until recently. A few months ago, was when I started noticing a faint smell of burnt oil. did a little investigating and found it's around the cooler. Just received the dorman cooler to fix the problem.

I just replaced one on a 2016 Jeep with a 3.2 liter. The old one was gushing oil out of the two plugs screwed into the end of the housing. A design flaw to the max! I know of many Jeeps that had this problem. Mine has it now! Keep up with your install bills for this fix in case a lawsuit happens. Oh and replace the oil sensor. These fail often. The other sensor tends to not have problems. 84,000 miles now and problem started at 3800 miles. Dies more often each year. Coil packs and plugs while you are there bc almost time to change at 80,000 miles.

Amazon now has cheaper brands that make an aluminum housing that comes complete with cooler and oil filter. They appear to be made by the same company with different names on them. I have no idea who makes the filter so I ran mine after it was done for about 10 minutes and then changed my oil with a good oil filter. I did this in my garage at home but I used to be a Saturn tech. This oil cooler is ten times easier than the GM 3.0L motor used in the Saturn L series and the Cadilac. I do not have that cool creeper so I took the wheels off of my Jeep and sat it down on low jack stands. The main issue I had was my stinger bumper. Being short I just stood on the bumper and leaned all in. Get all the tools you need before you start!

I just replaced this part (for the second time) the last one only lasted a year and a half. The typical failure point on the 2012-2013 version is the plactic part that ducts coolant into the cooler from the top of the engine. its such a small part that just clips on to the bottom of the oil cooler but you have to replace the entire unit. It's made of such cheap plastic it can't handle the heat and pressure of the cooling system. The 3.6L runs hotter that a typical engine. I wish I could attatch pictures of the two that failed on me. I did use this upgrade this time around. I will let you know how it does.

I've switched to this Dorman unit and had it also leak...within 3000 miles of replacement🤬 I found that the oil cooler itself was slightly warped...not the housing. I took a straight edge metal ruler and laid it across the bottom and found a 0.12" feeler guage fit between the rule and the cooler mating surface. Dunno if that is enough clearance to cause a leak but thats where it looked like it was leaking this last time. Out of 3 factory coolers, only 1 had a flat mating surface. I would also note....give that metal housing a good once over. I found lots of metal shavings from the machining process. Some was loose, some needed knocked off. Blow it out with compressed air. Don't let that stuff go into the engine!!

Guys just my 2 cents I have 2 2015 Chrysler 200C AWD with the 3.6 I ran a test and it seems that its working, believe it or not, I remove the huge beauty = noise cover on top of the engine on one and left it one the other one since I purchased both cars in 2017 as lease returns, the day I purchased both at the same dealer, they had to replace the both coolers because obviously both were leaking already with 20K Original miles both were purchased middle 2014 as 2015 models, ANYWAY to make the long story short, both cars are driven more than les the same around 10K miles a year my daughters are using them, the car WITHOUT the beauty cover had it replaced only ONCE when I purchased the cars, the other one with the cover 3 times in TOTAL so, I have a theory that that FRICKING huge beauty cover with all the noise reduction foam is not letting the heat dissipate, it just cooks everything there under it... I just decided to remove the second one since last time the cooler was removed and no issue so far...Thank GOD! I purchased the lifetime warranty on both... spread the word REMOVE THE BEAUTY COVERS ON ALL 3.6 PENTSTAR ENGINES! bunch of dumb FCA engineers

RTV on those seals is not a good idea. They should hold themselves in just fine. There are little pinch spots in the channels for that.

    • @sienile
      @sienile Před rokem

Well, I see that one doesn't have them. Still not a good idea because it can cause it to leak later. Only "failure" I've seen from these was caused by RTV on the seals.

I would love to see a long term review as usually the rubber seals fail not the housing so can’t see the point to switch it to aluminium.

I replace mine with the same part from dorman and every 4 to 6 months is leaking badly, the O rings keep getting melt on the bottom part of the oil housing. first time i used the ones that came with the oil housing, 2nd time i used felt pro, 3rd time i used oem o rings and still having the same issue. i'm just going back to oem oil housing and hopefully will be fine.

I replaced the oil cooler housing in my 2014 JK. It crapped out at 5 years and 60k miles. I’m now a 9 years and 108k miles and thinking I’m going to put a new one in again in about 20k just to be precautionary. What a shit design. The prices of new Jeeps are laughable. I’m
Sure they all come with horrible build quality as standard options. As usual. Lol

Curses on FCA for engineering and supplying a piece of shit part. Just like their rockers !
No recall ? This part has had so many revisions and still a point of failure. Can you say class action lawsuit ! Just quoted $1,600 from my Dealer. I’ll do it myself for under $200 and a days labor and I detail it like it is brand new !

As much of a fan of Chrysler I want to be, it is poor manufacturing and design choices like this plastic oil cooler that causes aggrivation for us Jeep owners.
This could have all been avoided if they would have used a spin on oil filter instead of the European oil filter design BS.
