It wasn't a free transfer but it was pretty cheap. Cech signed for Arsenal for around £10 million which is now around £12.5 million in 2021. He was bought by Chelsea in 2004 for around £7 million (£11.5 million in 2021). Considering how transfer fees shot up in the years between him signing for Chelsea and Arsenal its pretty clear that comparatively Chelsea paid way more for Cech than Arsenal did. I also don't get where people get the idea that Cech was always shit at Arsenal. The guy won goalkeeper of the year and the golden glove in his first season at Arsenal. iirc he only started dipping at the end of his second season with Arsenal.
