If anyone wants to see a lot of goat's beard in the wild, go visit SE Alaska in July -- there is a lot of it in the understory underneath the Sitka spruces! That is where I recognized it from. If anyone is in southern California, you can get Romneya coulteri at Matilija Nursery in Moorpark CA sort of near Thousand Oaks!

My grandfather was a dahlia breeder in South Africa many years ago and we all had dahlias named after us. One named after my sister, Barbara, achieved modest commercial success.

I don't think that many make it into commerce so that was quite an achievement. Regards Stephen

How exciting to see my beloved Matilija Poppy (romneya coulteri) growing in Australia. I live in PNW WA now but uprooted myself from southern California to be near my children and grandchildren. But alas and alack! M. Poppy does not grow here. However, the rhododendrons are magnificent here, and peonies too, but I shall always miss M. Poppy.

Crazy how many places it is native to, I recognized it as a native for me, but did not realize until I looked it up how widely distributed it is!

Really love the goats beard! Would not go well in my hot coastal garden tho'. I've often thought the inclusion of an animal would work well for your videos (dog not cat!) in the same way as Monty Don's dogs are featured.

When you showed the aruncus (goat's beard), before telling it's story, I first guessed aralia which has white blooms as well and also the leaves look similar to your aruncus....I have a wet area but cannot get Rodgersia to grow at all ...our SE US soil is too heavy and our summer heat seems to prevent it from being happy at all...

Hi Stephen. I rang a couple of days ago and spoke to you. My friend Attila will be coming to your nursery at the end of April and will bring a Dahlia Stephen Ryan back for me. He wonders if you would put aside a Mount Sturgeon Pine for him, please. Is payment in April ok? If not, I'll try to ring again to make payment over the phone. Cheers. Wendy from Canberra
