I'm amazed that they had so many models in their inventory. The Skyraider remained along with its replacement and its replacement (Skyhawk) which also remained along with itS replacement and they all flew at the same time!
Its crazy to see all the planes here.... retired before the Tomcat came aboard... which is long such retired... .... and yet the Hawkeye keeps on going. Amazing plane. Great vid. Love the narrative breakdown, and great nostalgia to the days when the flight deck was like a butchers block for knives. One tool for one use. Miss having all those specialized planes.... more fun than multi-role planes...
Proudly served on two attack carriers during the Vietnam War. Oriskany and Ranger. Both these carriers and crews did their job! Thank all of you for your service!
This is a short take from a film called "USS Independence Ready on Arrival" available from the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Do a CZcams search for "F-0590 Ready on Arrival" to see the whole 28 minute version of this film. Most of the film is from the USS Independence while off Vietnam in 1965 but some of the scenes are from the USS Kitty Hawk during it's 1965-1966 tour off Vietnam, which explains why you see E-2A #706 BuNo.151714 taking off.
This is great footage of the Indy. The best I've seen here on youtube. I was stationed on her from 1965-69. A time in my life I will always cherish. Thanks for posting this!
Flashback....., Two WestPac deployments while serving aboard USS Coral Sea CVA43 1966-68, then third Westpac 1968-69 on USS Ajax (AR6).... when I returned to the USA, The First Man just landed on the Moon and I was now a civilian again!
Im gonna add another comment here, basically repeating my last one. The Hornet family more or less replaced every plane you see here.... and the C model has been around so long its now retired... And yet, again... you see the E-2 in this vid... came out before the hornet was ever built, and with a few mods, is still going after it retired. Thats insane. Like the B-52. They built a great one
America, CVA-66. Served as EW3/2, 9/72-1/75. In Tonkin Gulf when the war ended. Air Wing gave ship's crew an airshow on the way home... impressive stuff. Thanks for the video.... brings back good memories of my youth.
Mine too. He wouldn't talk about Vietnam though. He talked about the Navy a lot but not a word about the war. He also wouldnt fly. My grandmother told me he had too many close calls and couldn't do it after he retired from the Navy
Memories of the Essex, Wasp and Intrepid at Quonset Point, RI duing 1960s-early 70s. Dad was a civilian mechanic who worked on S-2s, E-1Bs and "ADs" (A-1's). Never saw any of the CVAs there though,
been there done that USS Ranger CVA 61 number one catapult Deck edge control operator 1960 1964 my favorite plane to launch was the F4 Phantom I sent a lot of those into the wild blue yonder!! best 4 years of my life I'll never forget it!!!☺ I know that was a long time ago all I got left is my memories and they were damn good love that flight deck!!
Loving the orange nomex suits lol....I am reading a book right now about the Oriskany from the same timeframe and the author talks about the US being so unprepared for combat that they flew missions early on in the orange suits because there weren't any or enough green ones to issue. I guess when Carrier Group 16 first hit port in the Philippines the aircrews bought up all of the green dye they could to make themselves be less visible on the ground!
Seeing the deck crews gesturing furiously to the pilots prior to launch their aircrafts, one can't help thinking these are the men who keep us safe. God bless America.
This is the silent service, God bless these guys/gals risking their lives daily for the protection of us all. I know what they do, I am thinking of them daily. God Bless you Navy Men and women.

Good to see the USS Independence in action, thanks for posting. I served on board Indy from Jan.1969 to July 1971, great ship and great crew. God Bless all who serve.
GheGman2421...By the time I got to the Indy (1976-77) VF-41 and 84 had gone to the Rosey and VA-75 to the Saratoga. No A-4s or A-1s. We had VF-102, VF- 33, VA-65 along with two A-7 outfits. Later shipmate.

John Secondari. This was an episode of his series "The Saga of Western Man," he produced in the 1960s. They were great award winning shows. Today almost impossible to find.

Amazing how many different types of fighter aircraft were on a carrier back then.

A colorful yet expensive air fleet.

I love the small and successful A-4 Skyhawk. It's funny to see that the US can also, sometimes, make things small :)
go play metal storm and have fun with the A4

Gary, did you know Paul Snell? He was aboard the Independence about the same time. He was my father.
Does anyone know the long wing aircraft launching in the beginning
I know Im kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Judson Ishaan Meh I use Flixportal. Just google for it :) -brooks
Love seeing those Vigilantes. A not so well known USN aircraft.
Oh yes she was. not to be mean
it litterally shat out nukes, ohhh, that scat fetish is getting to me
I like those big AWACS planes and cargo planes with twin propeller engines they are huge planes launched from such a tiny base.

I’ll tell you something there is nothing more badass then a jet shooting off an aircraft carrier.
True dat, especially a full-burner night launch! (AE2 CVA-34 CVA-19 1965-1969)

In light of their lack of victory, I look at these images differently than I did in the 60s and 70s ... even after military service.
Seeing the deck crews gesturing furiously to the pilots prior to launch their aircrafts, one can't help thinking these are the men who keep us safe. God bless America.
The type of aircraft that stay remain on the carrier ops to this day was the E-2 hawkeye..
My friend was pilot in the U.S. Navy and commercial plane.
He went to Vietnam war. He flew the fighter jet when he was service the U.S. Navy.
Crazy how some Americans in 60s still had the Mid-Atlantic Accent just as the narrator of this video exactly does.

A-5 Vigilante
Are there any film clips of fighter planes that miss the wire and burst into flame while attempting a night landing aboard a carrier?
WHY? Better to view only successful landings, I have seen too many of the others aboard USS RANGER/USS SARATOGA....Be happy!!
