Rigorous training at the Famous Shimbukan Dojo | Kanegawa no Nicho Gama | Ageshio Japan

Shimbukan Dojo is a famous karate dojo located in Tomigusuku City, Okinawa.
Ryukyu Kobudo Hanshi 9th dan Hiroshi Akamine sensei seen standing on the right is Kaicho of the Shimbukan Dojo.
Kobudo in Okinawa uses weapons which are agricultural tools such as KAMA, or a sickle in English, which is being used for training in this video.
KAMA training is rare to have at a Kobudo dojo, and what’s even more rare is having Group KAMA training.

It interesting to me that people are interested in this very old form of weapons training. Are Kama something that can be found in the average Okinawan house or backyard?

Pretty much, especially amongst farmers. In Okinawa, there are many sugar cane fields, and they use a special kind of kama to cut the sugar cane stalk, and the leaves off the sugar cane. For non-farmers, kama is basically used here to clear weeds that grow in yards.
