More than 30 years after starring with Johnny Depp in “Edward Scissorhands,” Winona Ryder is reprising her role as Kim in the 1990 film for a Super Bowl ad for Cadillac.
The 60-second commercial features Ryder as the mother of Edgar Scissorhands, son of Depp’s character who had large metal scissors for hands.
Edgar, played by Timothée Chalamet, inherited his father’s hands as well as the challenges that come along with them.
More than 30 years after starring with Johnny Depp in “Edward Scissorhands,” actress Winona Ryder is reprising her role as his love interest in the 1990 film for a Super Bowl ad for Cadillac.
The 60-second commercial, which was released Sunday morning, stars Ryder as Kim and the mother of Edgar Scissorhands, son of Depp’s character who had large metal scissors for hands. Edgar, played by Timothée Chalamet, inherited his father’s hands as well as the challenges that come along with them.
Throughout the ad, Edgar has problems functioning in everyday society due to his scissorhands (however, he makes a pretty good sandwich artist). Ryder narrates the ad as Kim, who in one scene sees her son playing a virtual reality racing game. That gives her the idea to get the presumably teenage boy a Cadillac Lyriq crossover, an upcoming all-electric vehicle from the company.
Why the Lyriq? Because it features GM’s Super Cruise driver-assist system with hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada. Edgar will still have to drive on city streets, but it would likely mean less damage to the driver cockpit on longer trips.
“It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years,” Tim Burton, who directed the original film, said in a statement. “I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world! I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.”
Burton was involved and acted as a consultant during filming of the ad, according to Cadillac.
Prior to the ad being released, GM Chief Marketing Officer Deborah Wahl described Super Bowl commercials as needing to stand out. Particularly this year, she said everyone needs some humor after what most would consider a challenging year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Cadillac ad is one of two 60-second comedic ads that will air during the Super Bowl for the automaker. The other spot - called “No Way, Norway” - features actor Will Ferrell rallying fellow comedians Kenan Thompson and Awkwafina to wage a battle against Norway regarding all-electric vehicles.
GM last month launched a new corporate-level ad campaign - its first in more than a decade - focused on the automaker’s all-electric vehicle efforts, including 30 new models globally by 2025, including the Cadillac Lyriq during the first quarter of next year.

Everything's going to be great with the new movie.
My only complaint is that Michael Keaton just HAD to walk away from Tim Burton.
It's like if he had taken a page from Robert Deniro's playbook with Martin Scorsese, then he would've realized he could've had any career he would've wanted and STILL have these GREAT collabs with Tim Burton.

@@Toppers- more like for closure’s sake! The way I see it, Edward didn’t really have a happy ending. They still outcasted him at the end of the movie. Sure he fell in love and even had his own family for a while but the original could’ve done more with how the rest of the family members felt about his departure. I’ve always wondered how Peg, Jim and Kevin felt afterwards. I guess I can understand why Kim never went up to see him again, she’d be making it obvious that he’s still alive and then that would’ve caused trouble for him because all the other people in town still wanted “Justice”besides maybe the cop and the dog. At the end of the day he still ended up alone without even a single person to talk to and that part makes me kinda sad for Edward.
Timothee would be an excellent choice if they ever do a sequel, he's got the look down

Everyone calling this the sequal we never got, when there is literally a comic book series that continues Edward's story. He is befriended by Kim's granddaughter Meg and they have some pretty cool adventures together. Seriously! It is great! And the artwork in the comics perfectly mirrors Tim Burton's style. It reminds me very much of Beetlejuice the animated series. Really people! If you love Edward Scissorhands, you NEED to read the comic books. You won't regret it!

Well, I don't know about that, but given that the commercial came out in 2021 there's a very real chance that it led to his casting in the Wonka movie.
This just opened my mind to Timothy playing origin story for Captain Jack Sparrow, and being Edgar, a sequel I didn't even know I wanted, he will take Johnny's place with honor.

This is the cannon for Edward scissor hands. He settled down and had a son some how and had a happy ending unlike the movie ending where he was left alone hated for decades in which she didn’t even visit him whatsoever
Well, could actually be, in a alternate universe. Edward is supposed to be a machine/cyborg, and by looking at the sketches of what edward should be it's really clear that Edward probably doesn't have any genitals, so, how would he reproduce himself? And nobody in that town knows that Edward is alive, only Kim herself and as told in the movie, her granddaughter, meaning that she probably married someone else/got pregnant and had a child.
Well it’s maybe not as ideal as this ad, but the comic establishes a pretty good outcome for Edward by having him befriend Kim’s granddaughter & starting over in the suburban town

I like to believe that Kim went back up to the castle to see Edward and the two had a night of passion. Then Kim became pregnant and gave birth to Edgar, and then Edgar fell in love, and got married to a beautiful girl who loved him, and they had daughter, that turns out to be the little girl Kim tells the story to at the beginning of the film, making her Kim and Edwards Grandaughter

I'm hoping they dont! there's sequels and prequels to almost everything these days, nothing can just be left as it is, you can't modernise something like beetlejuice and edward scissorhands, the 80s and 90s eras of the movies make them what they are! even if the same actors were to star in them, it still wouldn't hit the same as the first ones. they are perfect as they are.
