One tip I thought of later.. When you’re driving on an unfamiliar road, tail a local driver who knows where all the potholes and topes are so you can better avoid them.

18 years ago when my wife and I were driving from Texas to Guadalajara and we were driving our Texas plated car, we were passing through the desert north of Zacatecas, we came to an official military checkpoint which only had two Mexican soldiers standing out in the 38c burning hot sun manning it, one officer and one enlisted who had an AR-15.
They stopped us and asked to inspect our car and they briefly just looked in it and asked where we were headed and then they told us we could go on our way, but before we drove off I decided to reach into the ice chest in the backseat and pull out four ice cold Coca-Cola's and hand it to them.
I had never seen two guys so thankful in their lives to have something cold to drink after standing in that hot sun without any shade all day long after stopping the rare car that went down that secondary road we were traveling on.

Absolutely agree with staying on the US side of the border the night before…..but check when the border is open. Went to the Colombia border crossing outside of Laredo. Got there at 6 but it didn’t open until 8. Also get pesos after you cross the border for the tolls. Huge tip: get special Mexico car insurance since US car insurance almost never covers your car in Mexico. I believe you can get your car TIP (temporary import permit) online before you go but have to do it with plenty of time before you leave and do get your TIP because if I remember correctly that your car can be impounded if you don’t have one. Also to follow on the toilet paper tip, many restrooms charge 5-10 peso to use them. Finally be careful at gas stations. Sometimes they over charge!

A big tip I think you may be missing (I’m early on in the vid) in the Mexico City, and the state of Mex, there are days and times when your plate is not allowed on the streets. They have a system that limits when you can drive based on your last digit of you plate #. Your car can be impounded and it be a very costly experience. Also in towns where the roads get wider, the left turn lane is all the way at the right curb, sometimes… Another thing you will encounter is very slow moving very poorly equipped vehicles. Lots are not lit up properly at night, the slow movers..

Topes right! and enough Spanish to deal with the cops who pull us gringos over for dinero. Was pulled over for “speeding” when I was totally under the limit.(to wit never got a ticket in the states after 50 years. They saw us pull out of the rental car place, trailed us for 10 k and pulled us over. They asked for more money than a night at my hotel and I told them. I talked them down to a tenth of what they asked for but honestly only gave them that because my husband didn’t speak any Spanish and he was freaking out.

Great vlog guys as always. My plan is to travel via bus so I can see as much of Mexico as possible, I arrive late on the 5th of September and staying in Mexico City for 7 days. The plan is to get the bus to QR for 2 weeks and then SM for a week.
What I’m having a little difficulty is confirming if I can get a bus from SM directly to PV, ideally not an overnight trip.
Does anyone know if this is possible, or should I just go back to Mexico City and get a flight?

you guys missed so much about driving in Mexico... but for me topes and road conditions are the biggest things to look out for imo. 90% of topes are not painted and a lot of times you dont see them till the last second and then there can be half a dozen of them in quick succession. I've been on roads with potholes that are big enough to swallow your entire car. safety standards and markings are not the same as we are used to in Can and US. back in the spring we went to Ocotlan for the weekend and while we were driving around trying to find a place to park one of our front wheels fell into a manhole that was missing the cover! scared the living crap out of us. luckily we were able to put the car in reverse and back out of it. lots of examples such as this... its amazing to me more people arent killed due to road conditions!
