- In a ceremony which dates back to at least 1837, King Charles III was officially proclaimed monarch at St. James's Palace in London on Saturday after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. The accession ceremony was followed by the King's declaration and taking of an oath.
I have been the recipient as a American of the generosity of this Moarchy. God Save the King
What an extraordinary thing to see - the formalities of an ancient constitutional monarch. Penny Mordaunt - Lord President of the Council - did a grand job.

Wow! Amazing and majestic to watch this historic ceremony. We are witnessing a live coronation of THE King proclamation. Long live King Charles III !!!
Not a coronation just a ceremony announcing that he will be king and thats why he hasnt been crowned yet
@@CheGuevara-uf4pm No the King is immediately Sovereign on the death of Her Late Majesty. The Accession Council of the Privy Council shown here is just a formalised process of what has already happened. The new Accession Day in the United Kingdom is 8th September, the day Her Late Majesty died. All these proceedings are formalised and governed by statute law with the Act of Settlement (1701). The Coronation is just another formalised process of an event that has already taken place. His Majesty is already King and has full regnal powers.
@@CheGuevara-uf4pm But he does not have to be 'crowned'. This is the legal cermony that makes him King.
@@Kings_New_Clothese This isn't the legal ceremony that made him King. He legally became King immediately at the moment of his mother's death, hence the call, "The Queen is dead! Long live the King!" This is the traditional ceremony where they do the official announcement that he has become King. It's also his first Privy Council meeting, where he can deal with official business/paperwork, e.g. ordering the proclamation of his accession to the throne to be published, taking an oath to protect the rights of the Church of Scotland (legally required by the 1707 Treaty of Union), declaring bank holidays, etc.
coronation is set on 6th may 2023

There is a separate process in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Well said. In effect, it’s the Law and it would be an extremely long, involved and complex process to change any of this, as it is all enshrined in law and the time it would take for both Houses in Parliament to debate everything and then vote on everything would be exhaustive, and frankly, everybody recognises that we’ve got better things to do than change timeless and beautiful ceremonies like this. This is amazing. Such a dignified ceremony is one-of-a-kind. I enjoy the tedious details of the Orders in and of Council, as it gives more insight into the minutiae of governance.
I have one question: why is the lady standing next to the window (8:06) the only one who bows at the King's arrival?
I suspect, although I don't know for certain, that she works for the royal household. Everyone else there is a dignitary of some kind. That's my guess, like I say
late response, however people are not requiered to bow to the king, as the day of total rule has long been gone since 1648 (office of king abolished in favour for parliment). however i believe she works for the crown and therefore may have a greater obligation to courtsey.
@@WebstaMC That would indeed be a logical explanation.
Most of the assembled are ministers of the government. Nicola Sturgeon was the First Minister of Scotland and represented the Church of Scotland as per an Act of Parliament confirming the independence of the Church of Scotland.
The reason is because the Church of England is officially controlled by the King (he is the Supreme Governor), and there was uncertainty about whether the government could enact laws against the church.
Shit, I never knew Prince William was left-handed. 🤷♂️

In reality Charles became king the instant the queens death was announced. The only thing an accession ceremony does is officially change his title from prince to king Charles.
It is legally rather more than that. The king has to consent to, and sign, oaths in accordance with the Coronation Oaths Act of 1689, the Act of Settlement of 1707 and the Accession Declaration Act of 1910 otherwise Parliament can decide he should not be king.
It also declares that the Privy Council, acting on behalf of the nation, is satisfied that the prospective king is the rightful heir, is a faithful Protestant and has taken the necessary oaths and is therefore accepted as the next monarch. The proclamation of the new monarch to the people only occurs when the Privy Council is satisfied.

I bet there's a good story behind making the king of England swear to defend the rights of the Scottish Kirk.
Yes, it goes all the way back to King Charles I - during the English Civil War. He wanted to force the Scots to accept the Anglican church as the established church in Scotland. He lost that battle, and ever since all monarchs have had to swear an oath to maintain the Church of Scotland.
Well it would be if he were king of England, but he isn't. In October 1604 James VI and I decreed that he would in future be known by the style and title of King of Great Britain and not by the divided names of England and Scotland.
The official proclamation is the one read by the garter arms (on the balcony of St James’ palace)
