@@ThatSingerReactions ..the show...was a Motown salute to the Apollo theater...a huge tv special that featured all the amazing artists from that label...during that period Patti was really a very beloved solo ...cult like artist with a very devoted following...this was a huge prime time event...and this was her big shot at serious exposure...and she was out for blood that night...the critics and the planet could not stop talking about her...and she was nominated for an Emmy for her performance....and her career...went into overdrive after that....i remember just staring and listening in awe at her....when she sang...HE...IS THE ONE...i just broke down crying.....it was just too much for me....when they re ran it.....about a year later....the ratings...were just through the roof...i love her....

That is so true. There are a lot of powerful singer, but Patti Labelle is in a class by herself. Nobody can touch her power. She just leaves you speechless.
This was on May 4, 1985. The Apollo Theater was celebrating its 50th Anniversary Special and reopening. It's called "Motown Returns To The Apollo".

Patti has been the reigning Queen of. Snatching edges & handing out seats since 1958. The Apollo crowned the Bluebelles 'Sweethearts of the Apollo' in 1963 ...Patti came on stage like she owned the place as she proceeded to head out seats and snatch edges in this performance.
Her voice lifts you... when you didn't even know you were down... AMAZING!!!

Patti has be handing out chairs and Snatching edges since 1958 it's now 2021. the artist on the stage knew full well what was about to take place and there was nothing they could do when it comes to Patti. She and the Bluebelles have been the reigning Shutdown Queens since 1962.
The only thing I didn't like about this performance is that the engineer failed to turn on Mavis Staples microphone.

One thing that really stuck out to me other than Patti's amazing voice was the use of REAL instruments. It sounds so much better than a prerecorded digital track. I think digital music has its place, but I honestly miss the feel of real musicians playing real instruments.

So this is from the 1984 tv special Motown Returns To The Apollo-----solid entertainment from start to finish. But Miss Patti is the best part. Her duet w Joe Cocker earlier in the show is EPIC.
If I remember correctly. That was a televised show on TV that was held at the Apollo theater and I think it was a tribute to Motown and Barry Gordy. They also had Diana Ross, The Temptations, the four tops, mavis staples, little Richard, I think Sarah Vaughan, and who was also under the Motown label Rod Stewart and one of the first winners of I think the show was Pre-star search and he was a white guy name Sam Harris who is singing style was that of Patti LaBelle
Patti’s song was part of a medley of songs featuring Rev Al Green, Mavis Staples & Little Richard. She was the last song & it was almost like they didn’t know what to do after she blew the roof off the place. Her singing Jesus was a big deal when (at that time period) network TV didn’t really like that so you rarely heard that in the prime time slots.
I'm glad u mentioned that hair😂😂😂. Because when a black woman has a bunch of hair with a 🎤 that's the secret. Dooo Nooot Eveeeen sing no more. Its over for real!! It is going get really ignorant!!🤣🤣😅. One of my most favorite and inspiring performance by Ms. Patti.
As someone who works in theatre, this performance always made me love her. I remember watching it on TV back when it aired. Why (other than the voice) do I love her? She has always been a fan of theatre and just good songs. This song is from the stage version of "The Sound of Music." She alone made it the spiritual that it is today. Just for more evidence, here is a link to her as Mama Morton in a limited engagement (for her...Queen Latifah's part from the movie) of Chicago on Broadway as well as her with two other Divas at the Tony awards for the show they were in!!!
