    🌟 About this video:
    I've been wanting to do this video for ages, but I didn't want to rush into this one. LOL definitely no rushing, been thinking about this since Jan 2022! I was a bit hesitant to do this because there's a lot of overreaction to reformulation and I didn't want to feed into that with a superficial spur of the moment opinion. This is definitely not that, I've been testing these for months so I can tell you accurately what I think about these.
    Here I compare the old and new formulations of three popular designer fragrances; Giorgio Armani Si, Thierry Mugler Angel and Thierry Mugler Alien. I tell you whether I can tell which formulation is which, given that I've owned one particular formulation for a few years now, and if they ARE different, how they are different, their longevity and projection and which I prefer. I have also asked other non perfume fanatics what they think.
    Cos it's me, I also tried to be slightly scientific about this, yes Dr Claire has been conducting some experiments. This clearly isn't a perfect test, but I should mention, cos I forgot to in the video, that I also applied the same formulation fragrance to the same people as well, to remove any expectation that the fragrances should be different, so this is a fairer test than it appears.
    Obviously, this kind of video is a magnifying close up view of the differences. For some of these perfumes, the differences are likely subtle and this is what the non-perfume fanatics' views are to help with. They help to give the whole thing some perspective.
    So have you tried any of these fragrances in either formulation or both? What do you think about reformulation? Does it upset you? Do you buy lots of backups of your favourites? Do you miss any particular fragrance in its older formulation? Do you prefer the new formulation of any particular fragrance? Do you think reformulation is just part of perfume life?

    Also-I had a video suggestion: Can you explore a little about why certain fragrances are better in certain temperatures. Not just that something has “summer vibes,” but whether certain notes actually do smell differently in different temperatures, even if you wear a perfume on the skin. Maybe you’ve already done this, though. Anyway, would love your scientific take on this!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem +2

      I think the skin chemistry video hinted at that a little but there's probably a lot more to say on the subject. Scent note associations based on social context with certain seasons are also a huge factor for how much people think something smells I think. Cinnamon and other warm spices for Christmas for example because of the strong association with traditional foods. 🥰

      Thanks! Yes I think the views of other people trying these fragrance formulations speaks volumes as to just how subtle some of the alterations are (not with Sì obviously but with the Mugler fragrances) and I think it's important to keep that perspective. They are only going to be things that you will notice if you try the fragrances side by side or if you really know one particular formulation and then you smell another. If you are coming to buy alien or angel for the first time, it's really not something to worry about. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Mugler should've been sold to a better company than L'ORÉAL😓 like why L'ORÉAL tho?? There are many other companies like Shiseido, Interparfums, Give Back Beauty, Huda Beauty, LVMH, Coty. PUIG for example but I think in my opinion, Mugler should've been sold to PUIG cause I think the fragrance bottles are giving me CH, PR & JPG vibes which their perfume bottles are just eye-catching. But honestly in terms of scent, I think "Thierry Mugler" wins in the designer world in terms of what they used to have in the past before L'ORÉAL takeover/era. As a "Thierry Mugler" hardcore fan, I hope this brand does not stay long with this eviloréal & just move to a million times better parent company. "Thierry Mugler" is one of a kind & such an ultimate legendary superstar🌟✨

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem +1

      I agree that L'Oréal just don't seem innovative enough to own Mugler. Their Alien Goddess release was really very much like something Lancôme would release rather than Mugler. I doubt that Mugler will ever be what it was, the rate of releases has also slowed. Even flankers don't seem to be being produced 🤷‍♀️ it's almost like L'Oréal even realise what they've done. I wonder how long Mugler will be around full stop. Thierry Mugler was indeed a fabulous brand amongst a sea of designer dross, they stood out for sure because they were different! Thanks for watching ❤️

    • @ScandalByNight
      @ScandalByNight Před rokem +2

      @@dr.claire.perfume yea the Alien Goddess & Goddess Intense juice should've been in a Lancôme bottle which i agree with you(cause it gives straight out a mainstream likeable Lancôme vibe) + same goes to Angel Nova as well which i think it's more suited to be a Lancôme Trésor Midnight Rose flanker. These 3 fragrances doesn't scream MUGLERness at all but they're just simply crowd-pleasers. Also it's such a pain & pity that most of original Thierry Mugler fragrance releases are discontinued like Aura, Womanity, Angel Muse & A*Men flankers. Also i saw a new Angel flanker on TikTok which is called Angel Elixir. Last but not least i would like to say, you're welcome & i really enjoyed watching your videos as they are very interesting to watch while sipping my hot chocolate🍫 I really appreciate your contents👍 Keep up the great work!!👍 You're such an amazing & genuine fragrance enthusiast🤩

      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem

      I think that's right. I think the changes in some regulations and pricing can make companies reformulate, but with Alien with L'Oréal, I think it was their wanting to start again from scratch. I get that tastes move on and actually perfumes from 20 years ago can really jar with modern tastes, so I understand to some degree! ☺️

    The disclosure of the biases at the beginning was key Claire. Well done. No question that they influence our perceptions in many ways. I'll admit that I'll never forgive D&G for what they did to the '94 sticker release of Pour Homme. 😄 Travesty of a change. Nailed that description of the older Angel edp tho. As for the original Alien, I like to refer to her as "VaVOOM!" 😆Both fragrances immediately discernable in a crowd. Would be interesting to contact someone in the future to see if the current formulations get closer to the older ones with time. Some of these companies just rush stuff to market now. Loved the video!!

      Bias is huge in this for sure! I've heard a few people talk about 94 pour homme, that's the true Italian made version isn't it? People spend ages trying to track that down.
      Angel is hard to describe for me, it took me ages to try to work out why I enjoyed the older one more, it just seemed unexplainably better 🤷‍♀️ I have literally been trying that Alien side by side for months too 😂 I didn't want to be inflammatory with my comments but justified. Old Alien is pow for sure! I really think L'Oréal must realise just how many OG fans they have completely turned off by their reformulations.

    Ho acquistato l'anno scorso un flacone da 100ml di "Sì", la fragranza è divina e mi piace da impazzire, ma non ha persistenza sulla pelle e ancor meno sui vestiti, non mi è mai successo con nessun profumo. Sono riuscito ad avere una formula vecchia ma non li ho trovati così diversi, solo un po' più persistente e più scuro, con più patchouli, ma senza grandi differenze. La versione odierna mi piace moltissimo ma non dura e non proietta purtroppo e l'ho rivenduta. Spero che prossimamente facciano una nuova formulazione, magari con le boccette ricaricabili, lasciando lo stesso profumo ma rendendolo più intenso, e spero facciano lo stesso con "Sì Passione", bellissima fragranza ma poco intensa. Armani pecca in persistenza, su di me solo la linea My Way funziona bene. Buona giornata!

      I've not tried that Nina Ricci, but I know it was loved. It's a real shame when they change for the worse. For sure try Sì, you might love it, but you need to know you like the new formulation rather than the one that people tend to talk about on CZcams. It must be so confusing if people don't realise that it's been reformulated. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Hi Claire. This was such a great video. I wish I could have smelled the original Si. I have the new formulation. I’ve been hesitant to buy the new Angel formulation because I’ve been worried it’s so different from the original.

    • @dr.claire.perfume

      I think if you've not tried the old formulations, it doesn't necessarily matter much. It's only when comparing that people feel there's been something lost. Just try the fragrances and don't worry about the old formulations. They are gone.
      I just think there perhaps needs to be more awareness on CZcams that these different formulations exist, because when people talk about their fragrances, people might not be aware that there have been reformulations or which version people have. If I described sì, it would be me describing a very different fragrance to you and that could be extremely confusing for people watching. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Hi Claire, I'm with you on Alien. I only liked alien more recently. I noticed a difference with Si but I wasn't sure if I have to attribute it to my young nose vs now. The up close on skin and in the air factor is huge for many perfumes. Great vid. Glad you had them to compare.

      Thanks! I think that is exactly it isn't it? Most of the time, the differences will be imperceptible in the air. It's such an exaggerated way of looking at the differences and asking others to try really shows that it's not obvious at all for some or for parts of each of the fragrances. For sure Sì was the one with the most dramatic difference here, just a totally different feel to it ☺️ thanks for watching ❤️

      It was so hard to find one at a reasonable price. This Alien was part of a big bundle of fragrances and the photos were really poor. I don't think the person selling it realised what they had at all. I had been super paranoid about paying crazy amounts of money for a potential fake, I don't know what it's like where you are, but there are just so many fake Aliens here. Most are spottable but with vintage bottles where I am not sure what the bottles are meant to look like, it's difficult. Ooh I love this. We need some empirical studies on biases in perceptions towards fragrances. I have never looked into it, tbh (I‘m in linguistics and cultural studies), but there must be studies published in social psychology journals, quantitative and qualitative research could both reveal some interesting results. I would love to find out about the gender divide for instance. How do people perceive fragrances that are marketed as masculine and ones marketed as feminine and how different are their perceptions if they simply don‘t know what they are smelling. Maybe we could have our own experiments and find out? The whole question of personal biases is so interesting, and what do they say about our values and attitudes?

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem +2

      Yes the whole issue of masculine and feminine marketed fragrances and note profiles is problematic in general. I do think it hugely influences what people even sample, let alone what they think of fragrances. Blind sampling would produce very different results I think! Interestingly, I gave a mini bottle of lveb to someone who hadn't heard of it, she told me that she thought it smelt very masculine, so I guess patchouli had that connotation for some people. It would be interesting to do more tests for sure! Thanks for watching ❤️

Why change the recipe when you have a beloved popular product! I when I was you younger I would wear Calvin Klein Escape. A fresh youthful fragrance that I loved in my 20s and early 30s. Three years ago I was in the local drug store and stumbled upon my beloved fragrance and on the spot purchased it. I was so excited rushed home to open the box took out a now plastic not glass bottle and sprayed it on waiting for good memories to rush back to me and all I got was a very bad headache! The fragrance was nothing like the original it was a horrible cheap smell that immediately had me wash out all of. Calvin Klein's 'Eternity' is where I learnt how reformulations an cause heartache :)
    The original was incredible and 2 sprays lasted a full 8 hours as strong as when it was originally applied.
    I still wear it as its close enough scent wise but longevity is bit sad.
    Also Lolita Lempicka is a shocking reformulation scent wise and longevity. Shouldn't still be called by the same name just how you described Si was/is.
    With Si edp I was not a fan but I have Si Intense in the black bottle and the newer Si Intense (orange/amber bottle) and I love these very very much.
    Cloud edp has been reformulated and doesn't last as long but is still nice.

    I tend to be pretty sceptical about reformulations and people claiming how something has been ruined or changed beyond recognition. But then I think of some of the scents that I own that have changed a lot. Armani Si used to be so rich and sophisticated, nothing like the new formula, as you pointed out. And my friend who’s not into fragrances noticed the same. But then again, the fact that the juice has aged and got dark in 5 or more years could also be used as one possible explanation. I like that you used a more scientific approach to approach the question of reformulation. Because let’s be honest, some people here on CZcams overly exaggerate when they talk about reformulations.

    Hello Claire,
    I think in older formulations more naturals were used. Naturals are more complex than the molecules that have been created to replace them and I think our noses and brains can differentiate the differences, especially if you are smelling the old and new formulas side by side. Whether it's because of new regulations or not, as a requirement by regulation in the EU, things are different. I bet the manufacturers are hoping no one has older formulas to compare with... But they are out there and when you love something a change can be quite disappointing. I find a lot of modern chemicals scratchy or less nuanced than the naturals they have replaced. Here is to hoping they find a way to make them better or use naturals along with the chemicals to get the better fragrance from naturals and longevity from the chemicals out of a blend. That's my thoughts on it.... I guess if if's a bad reformulation don't buy it, they will either try harder or let a fragrance be discontinued. That's the only power we have as consumers. I am generally in the older formulas were better, richer and longer lasting 'camp'. Thanks for your video and take care! - Jenn

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem

      I think that's the problem really, some of the time people aren't aware of whether a fragrance has been reformulated until they've bought it. I think it was quite telling how people in general couldn't tell the difference between these different formulations, it's only going to be hardcore fans who've worn them for a while or people who are sniffing them side by side as you say. I think regulatory changes have certainly forced some reformulations. It must be annoying for brands to have to deal with that. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Good day, Claire 🌹 I only own flankers of these fragrances, so I’m not sure what the originals smell like, especially the old ones. I did smell Alien recently and I liked it, but not enough to purchase a bottle since it was very close to my flanker, Eau Sublime. My Si Intense 2021 version is also really nice, so again, I’m not interested in the regular Si. As for Angel, my two flankers are nowhere near the original and that’s a good thing, since I’m not keen on smelling like BO 😅

    I don’t know if I’d like the new formulation. I like how the older version smelled on others just not on me. I do regret throwing it away now.
    I remember smelling Alien when it first came out and backing away. I still don’t love the olfactory assault that is Alien but I can see why people are upset about the reformulation. The new version, imo, is more linear and lacks the character of the old version.

      I think that certainly comes into fragrances smelling slightly different but with ones like alien, where I've had the new bottle for a few years and the juice is still clear when the old one is bright orange, it's certainly a major reformulation. Just wanted to mention that it's not a matter of being allergic to perfume in general. It's that a particular element of the perfume can cause an allergic response. This is often down to patchouli. I know because it affects me; my eyes start to water, my throat tickles, my nose stuffs up and my head will start to pound. These are all classic allergic responses. I am fine with any other perfume that doesn't contain patchouli.

  • @katjack2780
    @katjack2780 Před rokem +1

    I have a slightly different situation. The Dua house, besides duping current perfumes or creating their own, also occasionally reproduces the first formulation of a perfume, when they run across a viable original. I was very excited to see that they had the first 1919 formulation of Mitsouko as well as the first 1933 formulation of Vol de Nuit. These would be virtually impossible to find otherwise. My bottles of Mitsouko and Vol de Nuit are probably from the '80s, early '90s. The 1919 Mitsouko is a lot lighter and sharper than mine; it seems to have more citrus coming through. My Mitsouko seems a little darker, with the notes not as distinguishable separately. The 1933 Vol de Nuit has that very '20s/'30s chypre-oriental vibe. Very rich. However, my Vol de Nuit is only an eau de cologne, while the Dua dupes are extrait de parfums. So it's probably not a good comparison.

      Ooh that's really interesting! I never really thought about dupe houses searching for perfumes and remaking ones that are from that long back. It's such a window on the past isn't it? I used to love smelling my grandmother's old fragrances and thinking about what she wore and where and how she smelt when she was 60 years younger. I don't get what sort of corruption and bungs are being paid by probably particularly one very letigus brand I shan't name is going on for it to be legal to not only not declare a reformulation but sometimes to straight up lie about it... Most odd indeed, especially when u consider most perfumes come from an area of the world with uber strict consumer laws and protections 🙄

      Well the Alien part of that comment felt like a bit of therapy. 😂 Glad you let it out. I get it though. I think the interesting thing is that the people I asked to smell it didn't think it was different if they didn't smell the menthol. It's not going to be different enough to most otherwise without a side by side comparison. Although clearly you are the exception. I know you said that you tried the new one and were horrified. I was wondering actually, if you do do a comparison, should I send you a decant of my new alien bottle? Cos I've no clue that L'Oréal haven't reformulated it again since either 🤣 it's possible. I know they had to reformulate the EDT and so instead they just discontinued it. 🤷‍♀️
      Angel is sweeter and just less patchouli generally but I actually found it hard to tell them apart for sure. Maybe I just wasn't as familiar with the new formulation? The caramelised chocolatey-ness has definitely changed. Again, I can send you the two versions if you want to compare.
      Sì is extremely disappointing now. I wasn't ever a fan of it because of how it makes me feel but I did think that the syrupy fermented thing with the rose was nice if not just a bit much for me. That grapefruit probably won't be for you I don't think 🤷‍♀️
      I don't really understand why fragrance houses don't have to fully list their ingredients. People copy with GC-MS anyway, so what's the issue? At least people would be able to see. Also they could just put edition numbers on their packaging when they change the formulation, that way the consumer wouldn't be unaware of what they are potentially getting. I've even heard of tester bottles being out and being the old formulations but the ones for sale being the new. That is just wrong and deceitful.

      @@dr.claire.perfume it's just frankly bizarre it's the only industry that could ever get away with it. I cannot think of another example, even bloody washing up liquid says "new" doesn't it. Yea I still with the Alien I'll defo compare them you know me, I need a few days free to be very angry and ranty 🤣.
      I wonder if there will come a day when Mugler sue them and take the names off them before it sets fire to a legacy of one of the greatest brands there's ever been. Like some British car company Wayne and Dave buying Bentley and putting Fiesta engines in there with Escort interior and claiming they are still Bentley... Just no no no

      I actually have no idea whether the people who run the Mugler fashion house have anything to do with the Thierry Mugler legacy now either. I find it a bit sad that individual's artistic visions are just crushed by brands being sold to larger companies, but I guess that's their choice to some degree. It must be sad for the people who worked at Mugler during the clarins era.
      I wonder what would happen to a brand who decided to declare all their fragrance ingredients on their packaging. Is there one already? Small batch production makes fragrances special in the indie world so logically formulation numbers shouldn't be a negative in the designer world.

    All of these smell old and thats why they were reformulated. Si is basically an old lady frafrance. Angel is the nicer one of them but has dated with a sweet chocolate smell. Alien, tbh i never liked this, apart from the top notes to me it smells animalistic with a touch of BO.😢

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 5 měsíci

      I guess Angel came out in 1992 and so is old now, but it's also likely to have been reformulated due to IFRA regulatory changes (this was certainly the case a few times with Alien) and also the acquisition of Mugler by L'Oréal. Sí was love it or hate it, the greener blackcurrant smell is not something everyone loves,. especially in the US where blackcurrant is a less common occurrence and flavour in foods 😊 thanks for watching 🥰

    I have to say that the 2020 formula of Alien still has the ambery base and is noticeably stronger than the one that is in the counter at the moment. The oldest I could get is a 2018 formula which is great which still has that mentholated sultry jasmine. Dreaming to get one of the first formulas 🥹 The body cream still smells great though, as an Alien addict I would highly recommend

      Yes! I think it may have changed again unfortunately... I have a 2018 bottle and I agree, it smells much better than my 2020 and does have the metholated jasmine at the beginning. Ridiculously I have 4 different bottles now 🤣, the other two are much much older... Ooh I will have to check out the body cream, thanks for the tip! Fellow alien obsessive here! Fascinating video! I wonder about my bias towards old formulations all the time. And whether my preference for them is due to my attachment to the memories they invoke, rather than the actual fragrance being something I prefer. Example of this is Burberry Brit which i wore for years, but my most recent bottle has been falling flat and feels just… lacklustre. I’ll never be able to compare the current iteration to any of the old ones that I had but i now see it as something like a photograph or holographic rendering of the old fragrance i loved and this helps me to not resent it lol. Bit funny how much we care about these things eh 🥲

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před rokem +1

      I think scent memory and our attachments to things in the past can play a lot into this! I recently tried a fragrance that I last smelt in the 80s and the reformulation was disappointingly jarring. I guess that was just because it wasn't how I'd made it to be in my mind 30+ years later. It wasn't bad, just different. And yes I get that idea that it's hazy and not quite in focus, it's a good analogy and way to think about reformulations.
