  • About a year ago I set out with the task to make a special documentary for a special move - J 1234 and Da 1410's trip back to Paekok. I had some proffessional gear from my film course - big camera, boom mic, and other bits & bobs. And filmed behind the scenes of the big move.
Overall I'm not partically happy with my efforts, as I found out when editing I didnt quite get enough shots - so tried my best to produce what I could (however I'll leave you to judge that). I wasnt going to upload this for various reason but I thought I gave it a good shot and deserved to be uploaded :-)
Sit and back and enjoy a behind the scenes film of the volunteers involved on this trip and various lineside and onboard shots!

My Grandfather,Norman Patterson was an engine driver for the limited express steam locomotive between New Plymouth and Wellington dueing the 1940s-1950s.He and his wife Vera lived in a Railway house on Belt Rd,NP. I still have the black & white photo framed of him in his uniform standing beside his locomotive.

New Zealand steam locomotives look like a cross between Amercian and South African locomotive. Fine looking machines.

Really enjoyed it! A great Insight for those of us who cannot look inside the locomotives or gain access to the carriages thank you very much

Hi Matt, the Spiral shots were photo runs - however I chased it from Ohakune to Waiouru and went back up State highway 1 home

With steam locos most of what you see coming out is nothing more than super heated water ie steam, sometimes the driver and fireman if there a lot of people with cameras will put more coal on, to make more smoke, but a properly run steam loco can be very efficient and not blow excessive black smoke, with regards to the DA,s their diesel engines were designed nearly 70 years ago so they are not as efficient as later model diesel engines.
