    They used to air this movie quite often on tv in South Africa. This, and the Care Bears movie. I was convinced that I would have to battle the evil forces of magic at some point in my life. Turns out it was just alcoholism and depression. The 80s lied to all of us.

      @@thatonea-hole We’re all slaves (to one degree or another) to the inherent subjectivity and fragility of our brains, so yeah it’s all in our minds - but so is literally everything else we experience, interact with, influence, and get influenced by - so while the intention is to minimize the impact of that which can’t be seen or touched, the conduit by which we perceive such things is still the filter between our ears - making everything subject to the geography of our cognitive make-up. “Brains in glass jars” and all that crap.
      Reject the natural inclination towards believing in the empiricism of one’s own memories and experiences and instead embrace the magic that is intentionally leaving a 20 dollar bill under a couch or bed and forgetting about it so you can be pleasantly surprised every time you have to look down there.

    Zack Snyder took a lot of inspiration from this film for Man of Steel. The obnoxious product placement, the father figures hilariously dying by a tornado, and the hero being an irresponsible idiot. The film was a real trailblazer.

    Between this and Mommy Dearest, it's really no wonder Faye Dunaway is so beloved in camp circles. Peter O'Toole's line delivery for the Phantom Zone bit just kills me, I love it. Also Allison, I love your shirt, it's so cute.

      It's released in 84', which was likely written and even filmed during 83', so lots of 70s cultural vibes were still pretty strong. The "personality" of a decade doesn't really evolve until at least the 5th year. That's why it's really late 80s movies that feel the most "80s"

      @@metalgrinch Yes that makes a lot of sense! Nothing ever changes immediately when the number goes from, for example, 7~ to 8~. Because of this I think Stranger Things series 1 got the aesthetic just right.

      I felt a very 70s vibe from this, mostly from the cinematography and costuming. Also it seems like a lot of 70s movies used to look like the focus was way softened, and I see some of that here, too

    In the comics, Kryptonians can be affected by magic. That would explain why Kara couldn't fly over the magic floor.

      except magic isn't just invisible kryptonite. All it means is that Kryptonians don't have any special resistance to magic.
      It's irritating when bad writers do things like disable Superman with magic and then have Batman just POWER THROUGH it and save the day. Magic should affect them both the same way. Wonder Woman would be a different story, she's descended from the Greek gods, she should have innate resistance to magic.

    I'm about 90% convinced this movie is one of those deals like Star Trek II, where Kirk and Khan never actually meet in person. I think they had Faye Dunaway for just 10 days or something, and she was never on the same set at the same time as Helen Slater.

      I posted this earlier but for some reason it's not here: I looked for interviews, and one with Helen Slater refutes my hypothesis. It seems they were at least on the set together, though it sounds like the two didn't interact much and Dunaway kept to herself. O'Toole was apparently a genuine mentor to Slater, though, which is cool.

    I was ten when this movie came out. I was ALL about Supergirl! I had the storybook (still do), the coloring books, trading cards, even had a poster on my wall, first girlie poster I ever had. Sadly the one thing I didn’t get to do was see this movie in the theater! It just wasn’t out long enough!

    You know... I rather loved Supergirl when I was a kid. I think it was the nascent gay boy that I was, appreciating the overall ridiculousness of it, plus Faye Dunaway as a man-hungry witch who lives in a fairground ride? She was like a role model for me.

    Ethan the Landscaper is actually extremely important to the overall mythos, because later, he's sent forward in time to the 30th century and joins the Legion of Superheroes as Chlorophyll Kid.

      He's also another alien, from a planet called Madru, but they completely gloss over that. If they hinted at it, I missed it, so did just about every reviewer. It would have been silly to have them hiding it from each other, but it also would have been interesting.

    I watched this movie on TV when I was two or three, and only recently saw it again. I think I remembered almost every scene, but thought I had forgotten the connective story tissue. Turns out I hadn't, there just wasn't really anything there!

    Weirdest treatment of a time pressure/ticking clock scenario ever. "I must retrieve the power source ball thingy or my city is doomed - I think I'll enroll in a school, make friends, and play with the bunnies in the forest for a while..."
    Apparently, David Odell is not a good screenwriter when he doesn't have Jim Henson telling him _what_ to write? How did he go from "The Dark Crystal" to this?

    I remember finding this movie on a weekend and decided to watch it. I had seen other bad movies before, but I don't think I watched a movie that left me as confused as Supergirl did. Nothing made sense, nothing was established and they just tried to find excuses to make things happen for its whole runtime. It was just a weird mess of a movie.

    The fatal flaw which eventually crippled her Army of the Night was that they were all usually in bed by 6 PM.
    An “Army of the Early Bird Special” might’ve seen more success in the field, playing to their inherent strengths.

    The Salkinds last wish for Superman and his family on the big screen and they completely fucked it up with a witch, Ellis from Die Hard, and epic product placement.
    Least Matt Frewer went on to do Trek, Max Headroom and other note worthy stuff.

      Catwoman and Electra in the '00s didn't help either. The Quest for Peace DID kill Superman films for thirty years, and then Returns almost did it again if not for WB being too stubborn/scared of irrelevancy/desperately wanting an MCU competitor to force Man of Steel. Nonetheless, it's not like a heavily misogynist Hollywood needed an excuse to ignore female superheroes.

    I'm not trying to 'um akctually', because Kryptonian weaknesses/attributes change all the time, but the thing with magic isn't that they're especially weak to it, their invulnerability just doesn't do anything to stop it. It won't hurt them more than it would a human, it just doesn't hurt them any less. Kryptonite is specifically radioactive in such a way that (in more modern comics) disrupts their ability to use the yellow sun radiation that fuels their powers.

    Endor is in fact a biblical reference, a village in Canaan where a witch (The Witch of Endor) lived. It gets a referenced in lots of weird places.

    Originally the script called for Selina to become enamored and use magic to capture Superman. However Christopher Reeves refused the role, even though it was only a cameo, so they came up with with the landscaper.
