They used to air this movie quite often on tv in South Africa. This, and the Care Bears movie. I was convinced that I would have to battle the evil forces of magic at some point in my life. Turns out it was just alcoholism and depression. The 80s lied to all of us.

Zack Snyder took a lot of inspiration from this film for Man of Steel. The obnoxious product placement, the father figures hilariously dying by a tornado, and the hero being an irresponsible idiot. The film was a real trailblazer.

Between this and Mommy Dearest, it's really no wonder Faye Dunaway is so beloved in camp circles. Peter O'Toole's line delivery for the Phantom Zone bit just kills me, I love it. Also Allison, I love your shirt, it's so cute.
I am SO happy she followed Gene Hackman and Terrence Stamp in the scenery chewing tradition. Loved her scenes.

Despite being from the 80’s, there’s something very 70’s about this movie, with the nonsensical plotlines and weird AF pacing.
I definitely felt the 70s vibes
And something about the fashions and the delivery of the acting. Major "The Apple" vibes.
It's released in 84', which was likely written and even filmed during 83', so lots of 70s cultural vibes were still pretty strong. The "personality" of a decade doesn't really evolve until at least the 5th year. That's why it's really late 80s movies that feel the most "80s"
@@metalgrinch Yes that makes a lot of sense! Nothing ever changes immediately when the number goes from, for example, 7~ to 8~. Because of this I think Stranger Things series 1 got the aesthetic just right.
I felt a very 70s vibe from this, mostly from the cinematography and costuming. Also it seems like a lot of 70s movies used to look like the focus was way softened, and I see some of that here, too
Don't be too harsh on Selena wanting to get with that landscaper. He went on to become a highly successful businessman at the Nakatomi building.

except magic isn't just invisible kryptonite. All it means is that Kryptonians don't have any special resistance to magic.
It's irritating when bad writers do things like disable Superman with magic and then have Batman just POWER THROUGH it and save the day. Magic should affect them both the same way. Wonder Woman would be a different story, she's descended from the Greek gods, she should have innate resistance to magic.

Eerm... Actually as someone who has a fairly in depth knowledge of superhero lore I can honestly tell you that most of this movie really made no sense.
I'm about 90% convinced this movie is one of those deals like Star Trek II, where Kirk and Khan never actually meet in person. I think they had Faye Dunaway for just 10 days or something, and she was never on the same set at the same time as Helen Slater.
That...could be true...i don't remeber a scene where they both ate on screen at same time.
That sounds so plausible. I mean, how they manage to gaslight a major Oscar winning star like Faye to this train wreck is beyond me.

I posted this earlier but for some reason it's not here: I looked for interviews, and one with Helen Slater refutes my hypothesis. It seems they were at least on the set together, though it sounds like the two didn't interact much and Dunaway kept to herself. O'Toole was apparently a genuine mentor to Slater, though, which is cool.

When Peter O’Toole’s character got sucked into the vortex,I thought The toilet flushing sound you added was funny.Too bad the whole movie didn’t get flushed along with it.
On Free Comic Book Day 2011, I had my DVD copy of Supergirl signed by Helen Slater herself, and I still have it in my DVD/Blu-ray collection.
She was trying so hard to make her character work that I can’t help but admire her. I’d treasure that autographed copy!

I was ten when this movie came out. I was ALL about Supergirl! I had the storybook (still do), the coloring books, trading cards, even had a poster on my wall, first girlie poster I ever had. Sadly the one thing I didn’t get to do was see this movie in the theater! It just wasn’t out long enough!
You know... I rather loved Supergirl when I was a kid. I think it was the nascent gay boy that I was, appreciating the overall ridiculousness of it, plus Faye Dunaway as a man-hungry witch who lives in a fairground ride? She was like a role model for me.
I always wanted to be the man that Selina was hungry for!!
Ethan the Landscaper is actually extremely important to the overall mythos, because later, he's sent forward in time to the 30th century and joins the Legion of Superheroes as Chlorophyll Kid.
He's also another alien, from a planet called Madru, but they completely gloss over that. If they hinted at it, I missed it, so did just about every reviewer. It would have been silly to have them hiding it from each other, but it also would have been interesting.
I thought he was sent forward in time and became Owen Wilson.
And his story tragically ends when he gets high on coke and gets shot by a German terrorist in Nakatomi Plaza.

I watched this movie on TV when I was two or three, and only recently saw it again. I think I remembered almost every scene, but thought I had forgotten the connective story tissue. Turns out I hadn't, there just wasn't really anything there!

Hell yeah, Man of La Mancha is one of my favorite musicals.
They did a few animated Sherlock Holmes...things...where O'Toole voiced Holmes, and he sounds heavily sedated.

When I first saw the cover on Netflix I was confused on why I never heard of it before, then I actually watched the movie and it all made sense.
Popeye's was a stealth Lex Luthor cameo. The restaurant chain was supposedly named not after the cartoon sailor, but "Popeye" Doyle from The French Connection, played by Gene Hackman.
As we know, played Lex Luthor.
I remember finding this movie on a weekend and decided to watch it. I had seen other bad movies before, but I don't think I watched a movie that left me as confused as Supergirl did. Nothing made sense, nothing was established and they just tried to find excuses to make things happen for its whole runtime. It was just a weird mess of a movie.

The fatal flaw which eventually crippled her Army of the Night was that they were all usually in bed by 6 PM.

Little known "fact", Kryptonians actually only have one power: the power to resolve whatever the narrative problem is by use of a Kryptonian power.

Nonetheless, it's not like a heavily misogynist Hollywood needed an excuse to ignore female superheroes.

@@oliviawilliams6204 The films being terrible is an excuse. The real reason is that they don't believe those stories are worth being told (and that also influences the amount of effort that goes into those stories they do produce).

I'm not trying to 'um akctually', because Kryptonian weaknesses/attributes change all the time, but the thing with magic isn't that they're especially weak to it, their invulnerability just doesn't do anything to stop it. It won't hurt them more than it would a human, it just doesn't hurt them any less. Kryptonite is specifically radioactive in such a way that (in more modern comics) disrupts their ability to use the yellow sun radiation that fuels their powers.

Lucas probably got the name from here as well.
It's also a name for Middle-earth in one of Tolkien's languages. I believe it's Old Entish?

They made this movie that didn't appeal to Superman fans, and ignored the source material that Supergirl fans enjoyed And then because they made a movie that appealed to no one, they decided that no one wanted to see a superhero movie with a female lead.

Endor is in fact a biblical reference, a village in Canaan where a witch (The Witch of Endor) lived. It gets a referenced in lots of weird places.
