9 years later and I'm still in luv
They played in my city on Canada Day 2024 on the riverfront. To avoid the crowds I found a spot on the other side of the river to catch the fireworks. They played up til first launch. The wind would muffle the sound at times, but this song almost sounded more mesmerizing coming in waves of intensity.
This show could well be the best recorded, mixed AND performed of any live set on CZcams. Straight The fuck up.
Canada seriously representing in this vid!!!! Go Pete and Ian !!!!!!! Canadian ambassadors !!!!!!
I've watched this at least 300 times and will never get tired of it
Me atleast 30-50 times. Love the guitar work
Meh a bazillion times ... but who is really counting 😂 ❤️🙌
My first time.......................................Oh shit what have I been missing.
same!
I discovered it a day ago. It's my 43rd time listening to it.
Pete Thorn/Ian Thorley just amazing!
I must say that I have only heard a few songs of Big Wreck & Thornley but this dude has talent pouring out of him. I may be late to the game but I am a fan.
welcome aboard!
Yeah there was supposed to be a Saints and Sinners tour a few years ago with Big Wreak Tea Party and Moist that was cancelled because of the pandemic probably would have been awesome.
Please give homeless people, incels, women ,the Universal Basic Income. The Ubi = getting a guaranteed a minimum income of $1,500ish USD/month.
And we need the Universal Basic Income to prevent pedophiles and incels from ever being created. Fuck god for letting pedophiles exist.
I had this tune in my head all day yesterday, got into the car and turned on the radio and it was playing ... blown wide open.
Canada produces a lot of amazing talent. This guy is awesome
Thanks CZcams. This song made me cry.
Met this song 7 years ago. I am always back here and listening to the amazing piece. The things chase you from your past, no one could imagine. Even you yourself won't know them.
a perfect 3 chord song with tons of dynamics.
Great vocals and guitar tones with Pete and Ian.
This is my fave version of this song
MesaGuitarGuy sometimes less can be more, this song epitomizes that.
How in the Hell did I miss this one. What a voice, great song and obvious talent all around on stage :-)
This is an instant classic.
1997
how is this guy not a superstar?
That's the question.
I always thought of him as Canada's Chris Cornell, except he's a phenomenal guitar player with an amazing tone.
so kinda like Kotzen then ;)
Totally agree with you on that one. Incredible Singer and musician
I don't see the similarity except they were both heartbroken.
Cornell would be thrilled to be compared to Thornley, not a diss to Chris…
Ian is in a class by himself. Not to ever be compared to Cornell. Mind blowing. Best artist on this planet.
So awesome to see Pete Thorn playing with you guys here (Playing the butterscotch tele). Never knew he did! How fitting too 🤣🤣. He's such a killer player!
no matter what live version, still makes me teary 18 years and I am still laying by my mess.
From a Pink Floyd Poster but applicable here:
if you listen to this the right way, (late at night, totally feeling comfortable and being ok with everything in your life) you can get high from it, and that's a fucking amazing feeling.
took the words right out o my mouth - who needs drugs ...
This guy gets it
I don't even need the vulgarity and I get it, ever since 1997 In Memory Of
I agree. The "high" you speak of, is natural dopamine euphoria, and it's legit.
I usually like to turn off the TV at night, pour a glass of Crown, put on some music like this...and just let go of the day.
Ian is my GOAT be it Big wreck or solo.
All his stuff is great
I've lost count how many times I've watched this video. Just amazing. Some of the best guitar tones I've heard in quite a while. Great mix too.
my God this is epic
WOW. This just set it in stone for me. WILL be attending the upcoming show in Edmonton! WOW. Always loved Big Wreck and Ian's solo stuff. This was just amazing!
You won't regret it. Best live band I've seen, and I've seen a lot.
The fucking incredible sound of my youth. Thank you.
How good is it when Pete Thorn is playing back up guitar and doing it perfectly!!!
This is my favorite song! What a voice what a guitarist !! Greatest of all time second to none!! And a great song to play with and sing along to where i can. RIP Brian D you were great too! What a combination all 4!!!!
OMG, that was insanely good! Phenomenal talent all around.
Thornley with or without members of Big Wreck is always tight. Prefer Big Wreck together. Don't take too much time away from each other. Great shows the past two years
I know it's immature but the thorns play together !!!
Ian Thornley and Pete Thorn are such incredible guitar players
So Thorny!
at 1.02 when the band comes in with the big D chord and the portal to heaven has been opened pete thorn knows it
After hearing him play that song thousands of times, I still got chills listening to this. Awesome.
I know what you men Muchacho ! The hairs on my neck stand up everytime I here this tune , I think they are turned into attenas to help absorb the tune ! Most Satisfying !
this is easily my favorite rendition. Ian what you do with your guitar is nothing short of magic. you guys are canadian rock kings!
I know Ian is an absolute magician but that Suhr guitar and amp combo sounds so fucking sweet
In loving memory of is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time, n ever got the recognition they deserved !
one of the most under rated bands "big wreck" and singer ever. prove me wrong.
Go Canada! Both of them with PhD's in guitar. Very inspirational...
Thank you Big Wreck ! I discovered Thornley/Big Wreck a year ago and I am amazed at how addicted I am. The song writing, the voice, the talent of the band, the guitar playing ! . I thoroughly enjoy Every Big Wreck and Thornley album with every song being worthy with standouts like: LadyLike, That Song, The Oaf, Off and Running, Blown Wide Open, Overemphasizing, Broken Hands, Hey Mama, A Million Days, Wolves, This is Where my Heart is, Under the Lighthouse, Head in the Girl. Thornley: Failling to Pieces, Beautiful, Come Again, Underneath the Radar, Your Song, Make Believe, Man Overboard..... Amazing. These guys are the real thing - talented artists making real music. What more could you ask for in a rock band ?. Although I would love a mega stadium show - it would be amazing to see and hear their songs in a big production.
Please keep making great music and know that you are bringing music joy to a lot of rabid fans ! I write this because I love music and the joy it brings and I would love if every rock fan discovers Big Wreck. If you are a fan call your local radio station and request Big Wreck, write their management company (off their website) and ask for a local concert !... Cheers.
Best 'intro' to Blown Wide Open - Tone city!
I love you Big Wreck & Ian Thornley. Thanks for this awesome tune
Those lips, those eyes, that voice, that talent. Will never be matched. ❤️
Next level talent...
I still come back and listen to this every few weeks. One of my favourite songs, and this live version is next level
Damn straight.
This is stunning, simply stunning.
I saw Ian live back years ago in a small venue and was easily one of my top concert/ bands I’ve ever seen live...If you’re into guitar you can appreciate what he does on stage with his band… Unreal sound highly highly highly underrated guitarist JMO
Beautiful, Sensual and Haunting...one of my very Favorite songs! ♡♡♡Love the various live versions...
What a awesome voice!!!
I'm blown wide open just by how this band sounds live !
One of the more sensitive and nuanced performances of BWO that I've seen. Great job, Pete & Ian.
Caught this amazing performance back in 2014 @ NAMM and it still blows me wide open today....how these guys didn't break bigger is beyond me....
Musicians par excellence !
I just found out. Ian Thornley is my new guitar hero. F***in love the playing.
Look up Big Wreck Live At the RTH. It's the symphony show from 2001. Time stamps and other songs listed in comments. I want him to do a cover with his version of Jimi Hendrix's May This Be Love that he started on Blown Wide Open.
I still get goosebumps to this day... like, right now too!
Ian Thornley..i could listen to you all day.👍
I heard Ian Thornley is originally from Chicago and attended Berkley School of Music. He joined Big Wreck from Toronto Canada. A guy I lived one street from and played in a band with is one of the three guitar players in Big Wreck.
5:05 favorite minute of the song
Oh man, this was magnificent!
Sounds as if they were 125 on stage, these guitar tones are so out of this world.
way back in the day I put money on them being great. sad that the music industry is so harsh. The world has missed out on great musicians. :(
This is the best version, even better than the studio one. Magic in the bottle.
always loved this tune but this here just blows my mind..one of the most underrated songs of all time and if im wrong, please feel free to correct
You are correct.
Dave Tucker Second that.
Nope, youre right on!!!!!!!
100 percent correct!!
He's not wrong
When his vocal follows the guitar line down you realize this guy's insanely capable.
Man, I like his sound! Great guitar work.
Exquisite. I'm an author, and this band's music is one of my go-to's for inspiration when I write. Listening to Ian Thornley serenade my soul is pure magic. Saw BW way back for the first time in 1998. Became an instant and long-term fan.
Always loved this tune!hits that nerve that everyone else seems to get on,lol!!love it!!
OMG .. what a great song, great live version !!!!!!! wow
I LOVE Pete Thorn's natural harmonics at 2:58 then his reaction. He is like "Yeah I did!". Have had this bad boy on repeat for the afternoon!
Pete those tones you've got going are to die for! Absolutely love it! Always a treat to see Ian up here in Toronto. Only if we could get you here too!
2 guitar heroes right there!!! Ian Thornley & Pete Thorn=W0W Factor
I love this version. Pure juice. Absolute perfection.

I unfortunately missed seeing them on PEI this year,, sad face

Thank you Ian and thank you Suhr! My guitarist has a Suhr guitar and rig and it sounds damn close to that. Amazing!

Great buildup/crescendo in the song.Saw Thornley opening up for Motley Crue in OTTAWA, ONTARIO, 10 years ago.Thornley held their own.

INCREDIBLE performance by one of my favourite artists!!!
God and Baby Jesus! why was I just turned onto this today? Only descriptor🔥🔥🔥
Top 5 all time. Huge talent.
Ian and Petes fills fit so smoothly its amazing, a stronger than common psychic link I'd call it
My God. This is transcendental.
Incredible performance!
Couple of Canadian boys doing the Country proud
I hace watched this at least 1500 times and still receive a soul touching impact from it like listen one or two. The little intro by Ian is something of a musical oddity, a genius happening, as the notes combine with sustain, ASDR, rhythm, tone and color et al iin absolute audio perfection. It is sublime, perfect, BRAVO Ian, virtuoso, virtuosos.7
Big wreck has to be one of the tightest bands live ever, I know this isnt the band, but Thornley is basically them so, ya jesus, this is insanley good. I swear they are a musicians band.
Aka if anyone doesnt know what that means, it means if you can play an instrument or know music you respect this man haha
Love this song and this version is epic. Note how he hybrid picks so well yet subtly; (hybrid; uses both a plectrum and alternates picking notes with bare fingers or nails) Its very dynamic, louder / softer as well as more and less cutting tones, yet fingers can 'yank' the string upward etc which is often both loud and cutting
So good to hear something new that does not suck ! Great Job Fella's
Well this song came out in 1998, but you know, it's NEVER too late to discover good music! Big Wreck has three albums, one more on the way, plus Ian Thornley's side project with two albums. Enjoy. This is some of Canada's best music!
Takes me back a few years, one of my all time fav's
Watching this on new years eve 2020. Damn Pete, you haven't aged at all. Something your not telling us?
wow much respect of this guy. I came accross on him from Suhr Guitars channel , so underrated.. he has some mix of Chris Cornell/Richie Kotzen with a touch of Dave Metthews.
Shout out to Pete Thorn. Great job!!!
Saw Ian & Big Wreck in Calgary 2013. Introduced my kids to real Rock Stars.
Canada's Best & the best of Canada. Who is doing this in America?
Man..I discover this album back in 98 ..so good.
Becoming obsessed with this song, it's a good thing.
His yelling towards the end is such an ode to old blues music
Hearing this live was even better. The whole crowd sang the chorus with him and we all fist-pumped to "Blown wide op-en!" Best concert memory.
Amazing!..bring me back to 1998
fricken' amazing improv on the intro
