Is THIS the LOWEST UK railway bridge?

  • After filming the very low Bishton Road Railway Bridge near Newport in Wales, I didn't think you could get any lower than its 5' 6" (1.7m) clearance. Then a few people commented saying there was a lower bridge at Coppermill Lane in Walthamstow, London, so I went to take a look. Sure enough, there was indeed a VERY low bridge at just 5 foot or 1.5 metres which appeared to be only used by pedestrians and cyclists, until a car unexpectedly passed under too! There were no trains running this day due to engineering works so we can't hear if this bridge has 'creepy' harmonics or not ;)
    One cyclist demonstrates how low this bridge is by accidentally bumping his head while riding underneath!

    These low passways were doubtless "cattle creeps" when the railways were built in the mid 1800s and would have served nearby farms thus avoiding having to herd cattle across a railway, an extremely dangerous procedure indeed. There was one on our local railway and next to it a level crossing for vehicular access, and when the line was closed in 1964 the railway (girder) bridge was removed and it then served cattle AND motor traffic, it only went to a farm so it was probably one tractor a day!

    I lived just up the road from this bridge or tunnel as we used to call it as kids. We would often ride our bikes under it at speed seeing who would duck at the last moment save losing his head. My dad used to work on boats at the marina which is a bit further down the track. He had an old Hillman imp estate that would fit under perfectly. Back then you could get a key and go across the top as well. We played on that part of the railway many summers past. It’s worth a vist it’s just after the entrance to the ‘wetlands’ down Coppermill lane E17.

    Looks like dispite adding a third track on the line above recently, they did not take the opertunity to improve the experience of using Coppermill Lane for those that use it as a cut through. It would have been a major blockade to do this type of works which would have invoved daming the coppermill stream,removing two bridge decks, installing new pre cast sections once the area had been cleared and then install new bridge decks above, plus final renistatment works. really only something that could be done at Christmas and then access to the site would have been intersting.

    • @LesD9
      @LesD9 Před 5 lety +1

      @Lancashirelad If it's worth making something complicated, be sure the authorities will!
      "The chord marking should indicate the available headroom over a width of not less than 3 metres. The height indicated on the warning signs, determined in accordance with paras 7.8 to 7.12, should be the lowest headroom between the chord limits. On a narrow bridge where the headroom decreases rapidly away from the centre, a 3 metre chord marking is appropriate. On a wide bridge with only a gradual reduction in headroom it might be possible to increase the chord width to 6 metres or more without excessively restricting the signed height, thus maintaining two-way operation for all vehicles that can pass under the bridge. In these circumstances, the warning sign to diagram 531.1 is unlikely to require the supplementary plate to diagram 531.2. Where 16'-6" (5.03 m) headroom is available over much of the carriageway width, but not all of it, diagram 532.3 or 532.3A should be used with the central signs varied to 16'-6" (5.0 m) and the signs on the side chords indicating the clearance available at the near side channel (see paras 7.10 and 7.11 for measurement of clearances). Black and yellow markings shown in diagram 532.2 or 532.2A should then be used over those parts of the carriageway where the clearance is below 16'-6", to give greater emphasis to the restricted height. It is recommended that the yellow parts of the marking should be retroreflective; they may also be fluorescent (see para 7.6). The chord markings shown in diagrams 532.3 and 532.3A may be used in circumstances other than described above, particularly on wide roads where there are two lanes in one or both directions, with the side chord positioned over the left hand lane. Side chords are also useful where vehicles with a height well below that shown for the centre of the road might strike the bridge if keeping close to the left hand side of the carriageway."

    Dennis Weaver should have taken his Chrysler Valliant under here and he wouldn't have any more problems with the following truck

      The truck would have crashed through the crossing and got right back on his tail.

      @@morthren That's true.... Even so Dennis Weavers Chysler Valliant was a useless pile of shit anyway. The body of it leaned all over the place and it kept sliding off the road into the dirt and sand. Useless chrome bumpers that kept catching and getting stuck onto yellow school buses. In the end it blew a headgasket. It wasn't even flogged or driven that hard.

      @morthren  Před 5 lety

      I'm trying to find something unique. Just about every lift has been filmed but I'm waiting to find something a bit different.

    I take it you had to duck going through this bridge lol, but you could bang your head on that bridge if your not careful. Wow that sure is low lol.

    Where did the car go? Does that gate open for cars automatically? If so, why have a gate at all? 🤔

    • @morthren
      @morthren  Před 5 lety

      Yeah, he had a key fob to open the gate. I'm not sure where he went.
