Are you able to add the apprenticeship list to the description?
How to break into tech - be a black woman and be able to communicate (with mediocre technical skill). So simple, innit?
It's my pleasure!
It’s there now!
@@Bukola1 THANK YOU so very much!!!
"You have value regardless of what job you have" 🙌
As someone who VERY recently broke into tech, everything she said is awesome, but I'll add what I've found out in the past few months:
1. Bukola got in to tech years ago using free sources and a free training program. The landscape is different now. Bootcamps are everywhere, Admissions to CS degree programs and bootcamps has increased significantly, so the competition to getting an entry level job is really difficult.
2. Aside from checking bootcamp graduation rates, ask how many of their graduates they hire as assistants, and how many actually get relevant SE jobs after.
3. DO NOT WAIT to code for the first time when you start your bootcamp. Definitely go through other free resources and learn a language before starting. Then you will get the most out of it.
3. Recruiters. I think the hardest part of getting a job is getting past the technical recruiters. They can be difficult to communicate with by all means because they get lots of messages from other entry level SEs. When Networking for entry level jobs you will notice recruiters, managers, etc are cordial but aren't really proactive in many cases.
4. Job hunt is RANDOM. I've seen people interrogated for entry level roles and other have nice easy going behavioral interviews before getting hired. The process is so random and subjective you can't compare your timeline to another person.
5. You can learn entry level skills are your own, but again, the competition is different and you will be up against those who've taken classes, bootcamps, degrees, etc.
This is honestly one of the most transparent comments I’ve ever read! Thank you, I’m still trying to pivot from another field and it’s been difficult but it’s good to see it’s not “me”.
Thank you for being so open and transparent, puts a lot of things into perspective.
Thank you for this.
@@naturallyempressive4951 definitely not you. One thing people aren't saying is that tech companies hired entry level like mad Men for the past few years but things have changed. I've taked with reps from places like twitch and discord and they even admit they hired too many at the entry level and need more experienced devs to take their products to the next level and reach a broader audience. Experienced devs are in HIGH DEMAND. entry level not so much.
ALSO, if you're into UX UI or data analysis just know those jobs are even more competitive than SE.
Absolutely
one thing I'll say is that people think its easy to break into tech. they see the money and think its an easy path to 6 figures. it is NOT easy. you have to be genuinely interested in the work you're doing. if not, you will not enjoy it and you wont succeed. you WILL give up when things get tough. you need to be genuinely interested. i was able to land a position at twitch after 7 months of self studying and i would say it was only possible because i was genuinely interested in learning and building things.
after 7 months?! That is soooo impressive! 👏 I’m sure you worked super hard for that, congrats!
Especially after they watch all those tik tok's aesthetically pleasing videos of 'a day in the life of a Software engineer at Google/Microsoft' 😂
Did you start from 0 knowledge in programming? I find this so hard to grasp because I’ve been learning for a year now and still don’t know if I’d get hired
@@mamabear3610 🤣🤣🤣dont judge us. The truth hurts
@@judithblue81 what are you learning?
"You have value cause you're human, period."
Didn't realize how much I needed to here this today.
Great video!
I was literally just crying over the fact my ADHD keeps me overthinking about so many things I still need to learn to feel ready for job applications (UML, flowcharts, DS & Algo) while I'm 2 week stuck on recursion! It feels liberating to hear you still didn't overcome it. I now need to apply to "recurse" center in my city
Thank you Bukss for this video. I really needed it!
loving the braids ...
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing Bukola, this is really helpful.
Thank you so much for this video, it's really spirit lifting
Thank you Bukola. Love from Zimbabwe!
Thank you so much for this video 🤗 So much useful information and advice.
Life is simple. I see a Bukola video, I stop whatever I'm doing and watch ^_^
This was so helpful! Your content has been getting me through my self-taught software engineer journey. Thank you for this video!💘
Big thanks for this great video, Bukola. Great content as usual! Been trying to find the list of Tech Apprenticeship in the video description. Not sure you included it eventually
Thanks for your content, which is always helpful and informative
This is very resourceful,Bukola.
I love this channel I am finishing my first degree and then I will be transitioning into tech. Keep up the good work!
Well, this video has multi-inspired me more.. Thanks for dropping the video!
Thanks for pointing out the differences and challenges maybe be different for everyone. Most people don't usually look also on the demographic differences, how the tech industry maybe in the country they are living in, e.t.c. Some countries are still seeing a degree as a necessity instead of experience in some cases. Thanks for the video 👏
Bukoka, thanks for sharing this valuable tip!
I just got a job in tech sales!
As always very informative and interesting. ❤❤❤❤
yesss we love this!
speaking to lots of people who come from non-traditional backgrounds, community can be such an important aspect. If you're in a community you have the safe space to ask questions, get advice and feedback on your resume and applications.
great advice as always, Bukola!
Your accent and voice is lit 🔥🔥..... Tú eres elegante
Lol thanks!
"layoffs are a business failure" 🔥🔥🔥
the fact that you constantly put out such helpful content is so inspiring to me ✨
Thanks! I really appreciate your comment :) Making content on CZcams is difficult, so comments like this really help not give up
@@Bukola1 I’m so excited you replied haha 😅 and I can related, I’ve been gone for 2 years and trying to get back into it. This might get lost among other comments but I just wanna tell you that I found your channel years ago through millennial money way before I even became a dev and I thought you were so down to earth and beautiful. You were one of the first women in tech I started watching and you have been such a huge inspo to me. So thank you for making the content you make and putting yourself out there ❤️
Love this! Always providing awesome content 💗🤩
Thanks Tiff!!
Great advice! I mostly would do the same if I were to start over this year 😁
Thank you for making this video. I have been feeling discouraged and this video has lifted my spirits.
Keeps going!!
Would love it if you continue this series...the best thing i ever saw on CZcams❤️
wait i didnt say that what s going on?
Thank you for this very helpful video! I didn't know tech apprenticeships programs were a thing, I might look into them. Would love it if you'd share the link to your notion template :)
Bukola, love your videos! What do you think about the new(er) Google and Meta career certificates? Do you think they could help a person learn the right skills to break into tech?
you have to bring me into tech, you are a good mentor.
So much value. Thanks a lot.please you didnt drop the link to the internship programs.i would love to have it.
Jah 🙌 bless you Bukola
Thank you so much for this! As a non traditional newcomer it’s hard to know where to start and what to look for. Do you have the link to the tech apprenticeships?
Thanks!
Thank you so much. It was indeed so insightful. Here is the thing, what is your take in someone who wants to break into tech by taking a masters degree program in tech related field? For instance, someone with a BSc in cell biology looking forward to enroll for MSc in software engineering or cybersecurity.
Thank you very much. I started learning to code last semester and my first language due the semester schedule was Java which to be honest was overwhelming. I’m taking C++ which is better helping me with the fundamentals. I want to get into Mobile App Development. Any advice for me on that part will be helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for the suggestions about facebook groups to join and network with other black engineers.
I do a management in tech. Most members of my team code, but me.
quick question. how do you learn the CS theory without the degree. self study or just ignore it? I am talking about network layers, operating system etc
Hi Bukola, nice videos...is it possible to get internship (paid on unpaid) while you're still leaning...I'm doing my training as a PM but looking for internship opportunity as Junior associate just to learn the practicality even if it's unpaid...
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you!! Could you please share the link to your apprenticeship Notion file? 🙏👏
Yes here it is: bukoladev.notion.site/Tech-Apprenticeships-0dde30d043734270995254d383ead3d4
@@Bukola1 thank you!! ☺️
Super ❤️
@Bukola please would Google or any FAANG company pay for my relocation to the U.S if I'm living in Nigeria? 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
Hi Bukola what software are you using for your video editing ..& and annotation and caption in the video
Adobe Premiere Pro & Final Cut are good editing software!
@@Bukola1 thanks sis 🙏🏿
Great video! I don’t seem to see the apprenticeship list? Am I missing it?
Sorry it’s linked now!
See it here: bukoladev.notion.site/Tech-Apprenticeships-0dde30d043734270995254d383ead3d4
@@Bukola1 Many thanks!
The layoff game is real
It's really weird how people who are doing a CS degree get told not to pursue it because you don't need it but then I see a lot of people without it in my CS classes trying to get one who already are working in the industry can someone tell me why its happening
I think you should just get the degree! Good luck!
From what I've seen, some people will do bootcamps or self-studyband get in the field and then once they're working in the field, they go back to school to help them more easily grow in their career. If you're already in school for it, definitely finish it. 😄
@@ashia9945 which is great
Even your intro to the vid is awesome advice before you even answered a single question 😂
Thank you!
Would you ever consider switching over to cybersecurity?
Nope I'm not interested in cybersecurity
im on the html css and javascript grind wish me luck....
Same here. Just got into JavaScript.
@@Diyoza781 its hard work right ! javascript is hard especially understanding all the methods etc
@@jamesross5120 It is quite difficult but we are both new to the language so with time it will become easy.
I wish I could get into tech but don't think I ever will. I work full time and I have two kids. I wish I'd gotten into it earlier.
Tech sales could be an option. You can go through course careers & schools like WGU that offer tech degrees online
@@queenyaa5043 I'd be terrible in sales. I work in admin so I think I'd be better suited to that kinda job tbh.
@@MashedPotat0 it's only 1 of many options.
@@queenyaa5043 thank you. I appreciate it x
