I RESCIND AND DENOUNCE THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY
Magallanes, a Spanish explorer, got lost and found his ship in one of our islands in 1521. He declared this archipelago 'discovered' for Spain. The Spanish colonial administration later called our islands 'Las Islas Filipinas' in honor of Felipe, their king, and referred to us eventually as 'Filipinos'. This Doctrine was the basis of the current framework of unjust and oppressive land ownership-the Regalian Doctrine.
In 1898, the Americans came with the same Doctrine of Discovery and fought the Spaniards. This was the major influence in Manifest Destiny-a US federal policy that legitimized taking of millions of acres of land from America’s first peoples-which they also used to take our lands and referred to them as 'Philippine Islands'. The US colonial government in the Philippine Islands perpetuated the unjust and oppressive Regalian Doctrine to sustain their greed for wealth and power.
Our government is just beginning to 'separate' our foreign policy from this onerous relationship with the US.
I invite all my fellow Christians to consider denouncing this Doctrine that negates the character of Christ.

I think the word you mean is: REPUDIATE .... which means: "refuse to fulfill or discharge (an agreement, obligation, or debt) ... "breach of a condition gives the other party the right to repudiate a contract". It doesn't really matter ... ALL Nations of the world are in debt EXCEPT Vatican. I am not pleased with the "organizers' limitations on Prof. Miller. I would love to listen to his presentation to a fuller conclusion !!

The newly formed American government was barred from relying on the Doctrine of Discovery (piggy-backing) by England in the Treaty of Paris. It was forced upon a population that the Doctrine could not apply and in fact, the indigenous tribes residing in the "original" 13 colonies were given inherent legal status called aboriginal title because they came before the newly founded American government. I have studied this, too @ Tribal Consultants.
