Korean Supermarket Tour and food prices: Grocery Shopping in Seoul, Korea at Lotte Mart Department Store plus cost of Korean food items (롯데마트 서울역점) Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well good morning. For today's video we are going to take you inside a Korean supermarket. So exciting stuff guys. Yeah, we're going to give you a complete tour of one of the most popular supermarkets (슈퍼) in all of Korea. The chain is called Lotte Mart (롯데마트) and we're visiting the one at the Seoul station (서울역) branch. And it is especially big so we're going to give you a full tour show you what you can buy inside of there.
So I know going inside a Korean supermarket (한국 슈퍼마켓) may seem like a bit of an unusual video but the reason we wanted to do this is because they carry a lot of products that you wouldn't normally find in a North American supermarket so we just want to show you guys those differences in case you're thinking of visiting or thinking of moving here. We're going to show you what you can expect to find in a Korean supermarket.
So we have come to my favorite aisle. We are in the tuna (참치) and spam (스팸) aisle. And this is super popular in Korea. I remember when I taught English here one year for Christmas I got this giant case of canned tuna and canned spam. So apparently it makes for a pretty cool gift.
So there is also an entire aisle dedicated to kimchi (김치). An entire aisle section just for Korean fermented cabbage. Kimchi (김치) products.
And out of all noodle cups you can get Shin Ramyun (신라면) is probably my favorite and that is right here. Yeah. Eight hundred Won (원) for a giant bowl there.
We are now in the frozen aisle. Yeah, and what you can get at the frozen aisle are Korean mandu (만두) so that is Korean style dumplings. I'll open that up in here. Here is an example of a value pack. You can get three of them in one. Pretty cool. And they come with different fillings. You can get kimchi (김치), you can get gogi (고기) ones which are meat and you can get a whole bunch of different flavors too.
So that concludes the shopping excursion. Yeah, we gave you guys a pretty good of the food section. Now there is especially in that department store there is actually a lot more you can buy. There is clothes. The entire second floor. There is a whole second level that we didn't even go to. There is electronics and things like that. We just showed you guys the food and this is one of the big three grocery department stores you can find in Seoul, Korea.
So there is this one Lotte Mart (롯데마트). There is also E-Mart (이마트) and there is also Homeplus (홈플러스).
This is part of our Travel in South Korea video series showcasing Korean food, Korean culture and Korean cuisine.

I miss thoes Korean supermarkets like Lottemart, Emart, Costco, Homeplus esp. free sample foods...yum... and lots of products in there. Thanks for the fab video :)
Thanks! Yeah, the big supermarkets in Korea are very impressive. When we go back again we'll have to do an Emart and Homeplus video :)
I showed this video to my Korean student Paul--he is 9 years old. He LOVED watching it! He would say the Korean names of stuff you showed. Brilliant!
Ah! I was waiting for the candy section. Ha
Ah, sorry for that!
Monica Gonzales 1
I swear to god those persimmons are one of the best fruits you can taste.
They seriously are and the ones in Korea are just amazing in terms of quality and taste.
this video was so interesting,i love all your video's ty
Thank you very much!
i love this ~ they let know us how to say that product in korean too ~ that's good on who is new arrived in korea coz not everybody speaking English. .😍
Thank you very much! Yes, it can take a bit of time to learn to say the word in Korean properly. Once you learn though it sure feels nice :)
Oh yes wagon wheels ! We have those here in Australia. I loved this video it's interesting to see what Korea have in their stores and it looks awesome. So glad I found your channel I love it
Thank you very much! Cool to hear you have wagon wheels! I had no idea they were in Australia. We sure miss Tim Tams :)
guys thanks a lot for doing this video!
Thank you!
Love choco pie. So happy that there are Korean supermarkets and restaurants in New York.
Sam is always eating a lot of different things 😂 has he ever gotten sick?
Love it. More supermarket videos. Please.
Thanks! We'll do that :)
Thank you for posting!! :)
Thanks for watching!
Hey guys! Great videos. I am a Korean Canadian and I live in Vancouver and it's always fun to hear about the experiences of expats in Korea. You can actually find persimmons at most Asian supermarkets. Keep up the great work! GO CANADA!
This is such a nice supermarket vid tour. Wished you took a quick peek at the 2nd floor though. :)
Thanks you guys, I'm visiting Seoul in 6 weeks and you have been very informative on street food etc. I've really enjoyed watching you both. :)
Thank you! Wow! 6 weeks is coming up soon. You must be getting excited. Given it will be January be sure to bring warm clothes :)
Oh yes... I'm so looking forward to the cold as I come from hot, humid Queensland...And yep I am super excited... keep up the good work you two!! :)
I'm impressed that he has learned some basic polite phrases! It goes a long way!
Thank you!
I love your videos keep it up ^^
Thank you very much!
hi guys, I love every video of yours. keep up
Thank you very much! :)
love korean markets.we have several here in LA, the prepared foods section is my favorite. also, you guys should think of doing a video where you explain a bit about yourselves, how you met, what you do for a living, how and why you travel, etc. i'm sure we're all curious!
This video was fun! My seven year wants to visit Korea solely for the chocolate marshmallow cookie. 😂
Thank you! Hehehe...traveling for food is never a bad idea ;)
omg... Wagon Wheels... lol Brings back memories!!
Hahaha...I know what you mean. I don't I've had one since the 90s...lol
Good choice. I used to shop there.
Awesome! I love seeing the products and prices! I never see anyone else do this and for anyone interested in moving to Korea it sure does help understanding how much it will cost to buy food. Looks like 3 people who watched your video need Preparation H for their butt hurt.
I like it this video .. yesss yeess shopping 😁😁😁
Thank you! Always fun to see what is inside a supermarket :)
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
After the people but their stuff in the boxs how would they Carry it I didin't get this point but i enjoyed the video so much
Love market tours in asian videos as its so cool to see things you will not likely ever see in your native country. The have started carrying the shin ramyun bowls here in Miami 7-11's stores.
Thanks! That is great to hear about the Shin Ramyun. I'm finding it is spreading more globally these days as we've now been able to spot it in many countries aside from Korea.
My wife found your videos. Now we're hooked. My wife is a special ed teacher at a junior high school, noticed video was from 2016 are you still teaching in Korea? What a great opportunity to get to know different cultures. We're going to binch on your videos today 😁.
Thank you! That is really cool to hear. My Mom taught special ed in Canada for a couple of decades. We haven't taught in Korea since 2012 but really enjoyed the experience.
Those chocolate treats have been around in Australia since I was very young (a long time ago !!). We call them Wagon Wheels and they are delicious.
Yum! So cool to hear you have wagon wheels as well. I haven't had one in a long time...haha
Where do you ship of the packages at Lotte Mart? Is there a postoffice next to the boxes?
Thank u a lot for this video, i am going to korea 2 days later and was wondering if the food and stuffs there is cheaper than buying in my own country, so i can plan a buy list when i go there! ;)
I would imagine it is cheaper in Korea most likely.
Love their persimmons!
Yeah, they are amazing!
Great Video 👏👏👏😘😘😘🥰🥰🥰
Thank you very much Aldijana!
gosh I wish we had supermarkets like this in New Zealand, I don't think I'll ever leave........
love this one
Thanks! Yeah, it is really something else and we always miss them when we leave Korea.
Great video guys. Looks like you had fun ! I always thought the cardboard boxes were there to reduce waste and recycle and most of the customers are Korean. The Koreans are great at packing anything 😉😉
Thanks! We definitely had a lot of fun checking out this store.
Thanks ,My friends.
Greetings from Colombia. South América.
Thank you very much! Oh we're hoping to visit Colombia for the 1st time maybe next year. Any suggestions on where we should go?
In California we had persimmons in our supermarkets, they make amazing cookies, but remember you have to use the baking persimmon for that.
Those choco-pies kinda reminded me of those yummy Alfajores you guys had in Buenos Aires.!!
Ah, they are kind of similar. It seems like most countries have some kind of chocolate biscuit.
I love the korean fire noodle over there which can be find at the noodle
It is really tasty.
SHIN RAMYUN i got the noodles now in HOME.. I add lot of mushroom red onions and carrots...
You are having a great snack!
While watching this video, I imagined myself buying a packet of variety sushi, a bottle of soju and a box of roasted seaweed and then realized that I'm living in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania and burst into tears.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I really hope you can have such a meal again soon. It is hard being away from food you are craving.
yall are too cute!
are you working in Korea? Anyway i'm happy to see that we are not the only ones that love to go in supermarkets and markets in foreign country!!! :)
Thanks! We're just revisiting this time as travelers but we did work in Korea in the past.
thumps up, sample foods are the best and Samuel knows it! lol, just walk around...you can even have a full portion of meal in there for free lol
Thanks! LOL, I know what you mean. It is good strategy to walk in a bit hungry ;)
I like that Samuel's face trying to say something all the time :) So adorable☆☆☆
Additionally, fyi canned tunas and spams are not considered fancy, rather at special days Koreans have a tendency to send groceries as a gift! That's why on Thanksgivings many people even send a box of oils, which can be considered awkward in pretty much every other cultures.
Ah, thank you!
Oh, thanks for explaining that. We appreciated those gifts when we used to live in Korea as teachers.
CHOCO PIE !!!❤️❤️
Love choco pies!
Love this video! How interesting that they have boxes for sending things off!
Thank you! Yeah, that is quite fascinating and I've found this area to always be busy when visiting that particular store.
Don't worry Sam I know what wagon wheel are.😊😊
Wagon wheels so Canadian 😄. I think they're called moon pies in the us.
Hahaha...moon pies? We'll have to try them the next time we're in the US
What vegetables are cheap in seoul?
Hey Guys, nice video! Would you tell me what is the camera that you use for making your videos. 😊
Hey! Thanks! We're using an Olympus OMD-EM5 ii and a Canon G7X.
Wow expensive cameras but Great results.
Thank you for answering 😉
Ah yes, choco pie, they are also popular in the Korean military as well. You know I am curious if Canada has a similar big chain Korean market, in the US, H Mart has a presence in some of the big cities, in Los Angeles where you have considerable Korean population bit more variety of Korean market including one called Galleria market. They all have food sample stations also, always curious if some of the ladies that working the sampling areas work off some kind of commission since they can be pushy on asking you to try it, lol. In regards to sweet potatoes, I am not sure if you guys tried the firewood baked/roasted sweet potatoes, those are also a unique treat too, there used to be a lot more street vendors that used to sell it like that but occasionally you run into a few during winter months. Spam is very popular in Korea and this is not a recent thing, it goes back decades, Hawaii is the other place that is popular. When Korea was very poor as a nation, meat was a luxury but when the US military introduced it to Korea it was a huge hit. I remember my first taste of Spam, it was cut and simply pan fried and eaten with rice and kimchi, oh my gosh, I heard angels sing!!! It was glorious!! lol. Oh and the gim, those are little different then your sushi nori, this type of gim is slightly lighter, and they are brushed lightly with roasted sesame oil, sprinkled with sea salt and roasted over low flame or a hot pan without any oil, literally few seconds on each side, that is the old school way, now a days, it comes out in these convenient packages which is cool! Thanks for the video!
Thank you! The choco pies are awesome and the deal we found that particular day was incredible. I know for sure they have Korean grocery stores in Vancouver and Toronto. There was even one in Edmonton that I visited when I used to be a student many years ago. I'm not sure about the big chains. I would imagine maybe in Vancouver but I haven't visited since 2006. That is a really good question about the ladies working in the samples section. I've wondered that myself. The spam gift boxes are a big hit in Korea as well.
More shots of Samuel walking away. Please and thank you
Hahaha...okay!
We get Lotte products in the UK too...tasty foods :D
That is cool to hear!
My boyfriend lives in Korea (I'm currently teaching in Japan) and he wants me to move there so this video was helpful because I LOVE Japanese supermarkets and I was really curious about Korean ones. Also, you guys have the strongest Canadian accents I have ever heard lol. I enjoyed listening to you!
Thank you! That is really cool to hear :) Oh, we're very curious about Japanese supermarkets :)
those Persimmons looked so good. :) try making the Hotteok Mix! :) here in the Philippines it costs around USD$3 but its so worth it. Chocopie!!!! You should try the Banana Flavored corn puffs, I think its called Banana Kick. Sounds weird but its actually so good. :)
Thank you! The persimmons in Korea are some of the best I've had anywhere. Yeah, we'd love to try that hotteok mix someday!
If I am to buy lots of things to bring home from a Korean tour, do I have to declare the things I will be taking with me to customs? Thanks in advance
You'll honestly have to look that up as it varies from country to country. My best guess would be to make things look natural. For instance if you buy clothes remove the tags and bags they came in and make them seem like your normal outfits.
Can you recommend where is the best place for me to buy gochugaru? I want to buy it in bulk so that i can bring back to my home and make some really good quality kimchi 😁
I'd check out some of the big supermarkets like Lotte Mart, E-Mart and HomePlus.
Interesting video! FYI... Orion(another Korean snack company) choco pie is "the original one" and Lotte copied it later...😹 yes Orion tastes better. haha
Thank you! Oh, glad to know about the original. The original ones almost always are better :)
Your Vid´s are great.Best wishes from Germany.
Thank you very much!
Funny, everything you showed, I can get directly across the street. I live in a Korean neighborhood in Oakland, Cali. Persimmons are in all grocery stores in my area. The firm persimmon are really good in salads. It's the main way I eat them.
Oh, that is so cool to hear! Yeah, they would taste so good in salad. It must add some nice sweetness and juiciness.
+Samuel and Audrey yes, much nicer than tomatoes for this time of the year. I use a balsamic vinaigrette. :)
Do u guys get the store to approve vlogging before hand?
No, we just rolled with it but we made sure not to bother anybody including other shoppers and staff. We would wait for aisles to become less busy, etc.
They can ship all that food and other products for foreigners to take home? So just put them in thoes boxes after you pay?
Yeah, it is a pretty cool system.
That location actually has a great selection of alcohol. Also, many Japanese tourists shop there and mail things home to Japan, especially makeup, shampoo, and other beauty supplies.
that packing section is awesome! Do you know where they are sending there packages from? i.e closest post office? Would love to know!!
What about prices?
I know I'm too late here but the baby octopus is full-grown adult size actually, not a baby. it's more like a mini-octopus and called Nakji in Korean. :)
Thanks for letting us know.
i went there before and actually guys you didnt mentioned the fact that this supermarket is not the cheapest option. i used to do my grocery shopping at the smaller stores and those have cheaper prices. its not that big like the lotte super market but they have anything you need ^^
Ah, that is a good point but you can also find some great specials at the big grocery stores. When I used to live in Korea I would visit both smaller and bigger markets to shop specials and save a lot of money :)
I was wondering if they ship your items to country outside of Korea...
Yes, I've shipped items from Korea to Canada before from the post office. You can even send things surface (takes much longer) but is cheaper.
@@samuelandaudrey thanks for the reply!!! I couldn't find any information about this online...
How much the cost of the korean candy
It depends what you get but it generally is not expensive.
Which do you think is cheaper? Lotte mart, Emart or homeplus?
From my experience Emart tended to be the cheapest and also my favorite out of the 3.
Thank you very much for the reply! I'd definitely check that out :)
Didnt see what the price of seaweed was in this video. Are they considered an expensive item to residents in korea? What are the prices like for fruits and meat (pork, beef, fish) in korea (in U.S. dollar)?
Seaweed is relatively cheap in Korea but fruits and vegetables would be more expensive than in the US for sure.
@@samuelandaudrey why do they only have seaweed miso soup for special occasions instead of everyday... from what I see in my korean dramas? Is it true what I see in the dramas? Is there a superstition around eating it everyday? I love seaweed miso soup and cant see why they dont have it more regularly if it's not pricey.
@@samuelandaudrey how come they treat it like something special then? I always see it in the Korean drama that normally they dont have seaweed soup until someone's bday
Where your from the Canada, me Montréal
That is cool! Audrey was born in Montreal and I'm from Vancouver Island.
Samuel and Audrey
Cool Je vous souhaite un très beau voyage
Cool i wish you a very nive trip.
Spicy pepper sauce I had seen all here.. ASSORTED ASIAN GROCERIES-
Tub is like lot of flavours...
That is very cool! Is it cheap as well?
Samuel and Audrey 6 bucks
8:21 is it like a moonpie?
Yes, very similar to that!
WOW Korean beers...HA HA I love Japanese and Chinese white rice wine.. Like SAKI...
Yeah, those are really good and easy to find here. Especially soju!
Samuel and Audrey 6 dollars Aus
this is ridiculous 😂😭 So much food i love... here i have to go to a restaurant to have ramen and mandu ( and when i say that there's only one restaurant that cooks korean food good here - i mean literally ) and pay 20 dollars... there you can get them from the supermarket for 2 dollars, my stomach is crying 😂
I wish they could have those prices elsewhere!
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I know right!😭 i loved your video by the way❤️😂
choco pies there are very cheap. for 24 pcs choco pies its already $6 in Philippines
Merlot from Chile! I dont think I've ever seen that brand here tho
Maybe that one is just for export. The brand we've noticed the most in Chile and abroad is Gato.
But in Korea, We can see the Chile's fruit everywhere.
I made it 43 seconds. Someone top that!
;)
Before i've left korea, lottemart seoul, and namdaemun was my last stop, even i stayed in korea for almost 7 years, everyday i missed all things like native foods,cultures.etc..im now here in philippines ,and dreaming to see korea again someday.
Hope you can revisit again soon!
Lol you can find a majority of these items in an American Asian grocery store like Ranch 99, Seafood City, SF Supermarket.
That is cool to hear!
Your videos are wondrful.
Thank you very much!
Just wondering where are you guys originally from
We're both Canadian. :)
cool! thanks can you do more videos like this? :) i love videos of people going around stores lmao
I. Want. To. Go. There.
Hope you can soon :)
bicep curls.
- alright
Do they speak English at emart ?
Probably not much
I thought Korean style sushi was gimbap 김 밥 (not to mention those look like sashimi instead of sushi)
Ah, the typical Korean style is gimbap but slices of fish on top of rice is chobap :)
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I didn't know! thanks for the info (btw, sorry if I seemed rude in my first comment xd)
always wrap your banana up lol
LOL!
쬬꼬파이는 오리온이지~
알려 주셔서 감사합니다
Samuel is soooo kind looking
Thank you! :)
I'm sorry you have to be the ones to bear my rant, but why do Korean grocery hauls never go to the meat/butcher part of the supermarket. That is all I eat. Meat. Chicken, beef, dweggi. Meat. Other than that, thank you for a great video.
Thank you! Ah, good point. We should have done that as well.
Hello, I am Bobby and I would like to translate your interesting video about KOREAN culture into KOREAN language. And let Koreans know your experience or feelings. So I need your permission for editing. Thanks.
Hehe it's not pumpkin it's squash 😅
Thanks for letting us know!
Wagon wheels = Jo Lois
Ah, cool to hear! They have so many different names ;)
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos
Jo Lois is the brand =] I saw them supermarkets here in Toronto ~
Sam, do an in depth Vancouver tour someday?
He described the sweet potatoes as, "shaped more like a root, than a potato."
So potatoes/sweet potatoes aren't root vegetables? C'mon man!!!
Potatoes are tubers.
oh... Lotte Chocopie is not the original one.... Jung chocopie is original.
Thank you for letting us know.
YES RIGHT." JUNG"IS NOT BRAND NAME ORION CHOCO PIE IS BRAND NAME AND ITS WRITTEN "JUNG" ON THE CORNER OF PIE BOX.
Love your supermarket videos, but I dont like Lotte, one of the biggest Chaebol in Korea who destroy other businesses. Greed, greed, greed. Last time I was in Seoul, I was dragged to Lotte Mall at Jamsil, hated it. BUT ... I love your videos.
Thanks Andrew! What is your favorite supermarket in Korea?
As of now, Lotte is one of those companies that we Koreans boycott.
Yeah well, intelligent people only.
Why is that?
