Thank you for your supportive comment!
WOW!!! That is a lot of work!!!
Fun to make and try different patterns.
I love this! Thank you so much for the detailed explanation and excellent demonstration
Your very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Patti. I have been coiling since the 60's and just finished some coasters with Sari ribbon for my daughter. Coiled coasters cannot be beat! The fact that you did the African design is what caught my attention. In my opinion there is way too little African design being done on CZcams. I enjoyed every minute of your tutorial and near the end I learned from you the glue gun suggestion. Brilliant!!! Thanks again.
Thanks so much for your supportive comment especially when I’m sure you have it down to a fine art after years of experience. Glad you liked the African designs.

I have been doing coiled baskets for years, but never thought about doing a design with colored threads,
Thanks for the inspiration patti i love all you do

This looks so exhausting to make. I know my old hands would not survive but I think it’s great for younger people. Kudos!
I find it very meditative to do this type of work. I don’t think about how fast to finish the project but enjoy the process.
Verujem da ste uživali, deluje opuštajuće i dok se gleda samo..

Thank you. You are so generous showing every step in detail of the entire basket. I weave Reed baskets but just beginning to learn this style. Just subscribed and love your channel!
You are so welcome! Reed baskets would be fun too! Enjoy!
I lived in Yosemite for 30 yes and knew Julia Parker, Native American, Miwok Pomo, and I would watch her making her baskets at the Indian Culture Center for hours. I dreamed of making baskets like her but I never took the time to collect and dry the natural minerals. I'm going to try making on of your baskets. Maybe I will have the touch in this art like you and Julia Parker, a master. Her daughter Lucy has taken to doing this art. She will carry on the Native Culture of the indigenous people from the Yosemite area. Be well and thank you for your art. 🧺🌻
What a lovely comment. Thank you for your story. It’s amazing what they can create with the natural grasses and reeds. But for me I had to unfortunately use manufactured products. But still turns out beautiful. Enjoy creating!
Great tutorial! I really want to try and will order some supplies!
That’s great!

Beautiful!
Thanks so much!
Just discovered this video. I was so caught up in what you were doing that each time you said to hold it tight, I squeezed my cell phone a little tighter. My fingers hurt, but at least I've practiced holding it tight. Thanks for the video. I can hardly wait to start my own.
Oh too funny. Power of suggestion. Enjoy making your bowl with the hold tight technique. Lol.
Thank you very much 👍🏻😊🤗
Your very welcome!
Predivna je korpica, boje su fantastične. A činilo mi se malo bez reda, dok nisam ukapirala šta u stvari radite. I kad sam razumela, naravno da mi se jaaako dopalo, very. Pozdrav iz Srbije👋😘✌👍

It's a beautiful basket, the colors are fantastic. And it seemed a little out of order, until I realized what you were actually doing. And when I understood, of course I really liked it, very much. Greetings from Serbia
Zdravo u Srbiji! Drago mi je da je konačno imalo smisla i da ste uživali!

thanks a lot to remind me this work
You're welcome
I really love it! That's very incredible.
Could you please upload the video for making the black and white basket.
Thanks!
Sorry, I didn’t film the steps for that one. It’s the same process. You can draw out your idea on paper and then start and stop your white and black to form petal shapes.
Merci de France

Hi, Patti, Like many others, I appreciate your clear and concise instructions and the camera set-up that shows so clearly what you are doing. Would you please explain (demonstrate) what you have drawn on the paper that is your guide? Thanks so much!
I just used the paper guide to make the initial markings on the rope to keep the pattern started. I was going to explain more on the paper but was easier to just do it on the actual basket. I meant to take the paper away so it wasn’t confusing. I guess that may have confused you. Sorry about that. Again I really only used it for the points in the circle when I used the fabric pen to make a mark on the rope.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I have started coiling and find it so enjoyable. My question is about the designs, are you aware of any patterns or charts you can purchase for making the designs, I do so want to make a star pattern but have no clue? I saw your demonstration, but didn't quite get it. Thank you for any information you can provide.
I don’t know of any patterns to buy but you can make your own. Do a little sketch on paper and colour in what you want different colours. Then just follow that pattern when you wind the rope around choosing the colours at the right spot to make the star pattern. Interchanging the different colours like I showed in the video for the spiral design but you will make a star instead. Make marks on the rope like I did so your star will be even.
GOOd❤❤❤
Thanks!
W.O.W.!!! Impressive!
Start to finish, how long did this basket take? I make rope bowls, like you, and most don’t take very long to construct. This being a little more labor intensive, I suspect it would take longer.
Yes, definitely takes a lot more time then sewing on the machine. Hand sewing as you know is definitely more labor intensive. But for those who don’t have sewing machines it is great project. It’s also a way to make fun patterns. I didn’t time myself and always adds on time when I am filming at the same time. My guesstimate would be 4-8 hours. A project while watching TV!
Hi Patti, I just saw your video for these wrapped bowls and I love it. I ordered some cord to try my hand at them. My question is are there patterns /diagrams for your designs? They are beautiful! Keep up the wonderful work. Thank you. Garnet
Hi, I don’t have actual patterns. I just supplied the ideas on how to create your own designs and gave some suggestions and photos of other ideas to try. There are no rights or wrongs and fun to just see what you can come up with.
You could make your own rope by twisting...wool fiber maybe? i have a rope making "machine" ...so i might give it a go!
Oh a rope making machine sounds interesting!
l used to do baskets in 70s but we used alfa(a plant) n plastic ribbons
It’s wonderful how crafts come back again.
I did a similar basket in third-grade art and crafts
Oh wow! That would have been hard for a young student to do!
Hi Patti, I make pine needle baskets and I love the technique you are showing. I inspired me to make one of your baskets.
Can you tell me how much cording I need to complete the beige, light brown and black one. Thank you!
I have watched some pine needle basket demonstrations. I love them! Glad I inspired you to try it with cording. I didn’t keep the best track of materials for the other baskets as I was demonstrating on the 4 colour spiral. But as a guesstimate I would say about 12 yds (11m) for the base cord and about 50yds (46m) for each of the beige, brown and black wrapping cords.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you Patti. You have inspired me to create! Love your channel!
I appreciate your support. Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial as always! This reminds me of the huge baskets we used to make doing this with fabric strips and giant wilting back in the 60’s or 70s! I wonder if you could use yarn?
I really like watching your CZcams videos. I have been trying to find an oval material rope basket with an attached half lid. I am thinking abou😅t a cat sleeping basket. Any ideas on how to make a half lid to attach?
Were you a 4H advisor? You have the gift to teach to the inexperienced people l. Thanks
Thanks for watching and glad you’re enjoying my videos. For your lid you could start with your first strip of rope the size of your basket then go back and forth on the one side of that strip making it the size you want for your lid.
No Im not a 4H advisor but I tend to be very organized and have a natural sense for teaching.
Hi, I am Cathy Neely. I live in SC, USA. I absolutely love these designed baskets. I love the one with the black, brown and beige. i have already put the stuff in my Amazon basket from your sight, but i have no clue how to draw this out the do the basket and where to change the colors. Is there anyway you could explain that to me? Thank you, Cathy
Oh gosh. Hard to put into words. Have a look at the photo of the basket to follow. Start with the black. Start by one colour extending the next by a few stitches and then every round bring each colour a few more stitches wide and carry on like that. Sorry it’s hard to put into words.

Hi Patti! I really enjoy watching your tutorials. I work in a non-profit organization and love to prepare workshop for our participants to learn new skills and improve their motricity. I'm interested in making your spiral basket. Could you tell me how you start it with three colors, so its tight and can't see the seam from the other colors? Thank you!☺
I show as much as I can teach in the video. I talk about how to use three colours to make the spiral. It’s just a matter of pulling it really tight so the rounds are tightly woven together. Takes a bit of practice.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you for your quick response! 🙏🏽😊
Hope it helps!
I have been trying to learn how to make a coil basket so you can't see the "accent" cord as you go along so it is a very smooth transition. When I looked at your 3 color spiral basket, I didn't see any transitions. Any tips?
I explain how to do it in the video.
Lovely baskets.. Which African country &/or region are they inspired by please?
I used a coiled method for these baskets which can be found in Senegal and RwenZori style baskets from Uganda.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thanks very much
In Uganda we have them in plenty just looking for market
👏👏👏🙌🙌🥰
Thanks so much!
Love your videos on the African baskets. Do you sale any of the African baskets?
Thanks Verena. No, at this point in time I don’t sell what I have made for the videos.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you!
Several years ago I made sisal wrapped baskets and covered with hand spun wool. Beautiful baskets, but after about 8 years, the wool and sisal started to break down. Any suggestions on how to prevent that? Thanks for the great tutorial. 🦋
Not sure where you live but sisal tends to absorb water so any humidity could make it rot. Or any liquid or dampness in the bowl could cause it to rot or break down. Makes sense when you said after about 8 years. The sisal won’t hold up forever.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts hah. Stupid humidity. Made them in Montana and moved to humid NE. Kansas. Thanks!
I guess that’s what did it. Oh dear. Now you get to make some more but not with sisal.
Thanks for the MC. Where do you get the schematics for the product.
I put some photos of other weavers baskets for some ideas in the video. You will see them at time stamp 00:50 - 00:55.
my husband will come home and find me all tangled in all those threads and want to know what i;m trying to do. lol, but i think i'll try it anyway.
Haha! Yes, give it a try for sure.
Maravilhoso esse trabalho amei
Muito obrigado
Im having trouble wrapping the cord around the sash cord. It gets tangled. What am I doing wrong?
I hold the sash cord in my left hand and wrap the cord around using my right hand. It doesn’t tangle for me. Try watching the video again and maybe you will see something you are not doing and it will work for you.
Have you ever just sew the basket and come back to wrap colors? 🐾🐾
No. With this method of basket weaving I wrap and join the rows at the same so it would not work to sew first and wrap later.
Is it washable by water?
Yes you could gently hand wash it in water.
