Hey, just wanted to thank you for passing this along, just made the tool and it works just fine! tell your son good camera work and thanks for the bloopers!
Getting ready to tear my 35 Evinrude lower unit apart. So far I think it may just be the clutch dog but I will know more once I disassemble it. I am a huge fan of MacGyver type stuff! I would have tried to figure out a tool so I didn't have to spend $70 to do this repair. thanks for saving me the time. This will be my first lower unit so I appreciate your tips. Thanks
@@silvers74 lol, I think I am going to need more than good luck. I cannot get the bearing carrier out. After 2 days of soaking in PB Blaster, using heat and pullers it wouldn't budge. I broke the top section out completely thinking it was stuck up there. lol, Now I have a stuck carrier without a good way to grab it. I will get it, just not sure how yet. Unfortunate part is that this guy that sold me the motor knew what was going on, I can see he tried to remove the carrier and just gave up. Planning my next move now. Thanks and have a great day!
Use a gear puller. Buy some 1/4 " all thread and cut two pieces about 8 inches. Pull using all thread 8" "bolts" from the two threaded holes in the bearing carrier.
@@patrickrede That was what we tried but absolutely no luck. Ended up having to break it up with a chisel being carful not to harm the housing. She wasn't easy but she is back on the water now.
@@waynesammyswingle6107 I had to put nuts on the other side of the carrier to keep the bolts from stripping out. Took some fancy manoeuvering with a magnet tool to thread it, but she held after that. Then it took a torch and a 1/2" impact on a pulley puller.
I built mine out of 1" copper pipe and it works like a champ. Took all of 15 minutes with an air saw and a drill for the tapered ball bearing insert hole, and it mates perfectly with the dog clutch.
@@wish2fish37 look up the original tool it has a angled hole that when you pull the omc oem tool backwards its designed to hold the ball in . this guys video shows step by step how to rebuild the lower and use the OMC tool . czcams.com/video/_JXaJ4PZMfc/video.html fast foward to 6:30 on this video . And heres a video on how to make and use a copper pipe diy tool. czcams.com/video/jvULOgu0--U/video.html
My water pipe also came out with the lower. I think that's normal. You just need to jiggle it a little to line up when reattaching to the shaft housing. If your water pipe is very loose where it connects to the water pump you replace that rubber gasket that holds it firmly in place to the water pump.
@@silvers74 Thanks for the reply! I'm completely resealing my lower unit including the water pump housing and seal, but it's a huge relief to hear I won't have to pull the powerhead to get the top of the water pipe reconnected. Did you use any sort of gasket sealant on it up top?
@@playati24 no and I did not use sealant for the water pipe connection with the water pump rubber gasket or between the lower unit and the shaft housing. That pump is moving water at a pretty high rate. As long as pipes lined up and the motor is "peeing" water when it runs, you are fine.
I honestly don't know. You might get lucky on ebay or one of the marine parts dealers but you'd probably need to know the tool's part number. Dangar Marine did a similar 30HP Johnson video where he had the tool and might have part info in his video. Some of these models clutch dogs have two teeth, others have 3 teeth so there might be different tools depending on that. Someone below made their tool out of 1 inch copper pipe. That or PVC pipe with a dremel tool might be your best option to get the right fit.
I've used the DIY tool several times. Unfortunately I've had the pinion break on me a couple of times on this lower. I don't know if it's because the tolerances are off or I'm revving the engine too high rpm too quickly before the gears get worn into each other. I'm going to rebuild it one more time and if that doesn't work I'm just going to buy a replacement lower unit or give up on this project. It's been a learning experience though
Way to go Dad! There's no better time spent than with your son or daughter assisting on a project. Good Job

Thanks you! I ended up using the roll from a cricket machine paper. It was a an exact fit! Didn’t have to you the the metal on the side!
Dangar marine has changed my life while boating , LEGEND, great video mate!

Great solution! Thanks for the upload.
Solid work around. 👍
Ok good to find your channel you got me as a sub now for sure thanks for doing the video
I like your helper😅
Thank you
Silvers74 . Still around CZcams? I bought tool and used on 20 hp johnson but now I can't maneuver the reverse gear past the shift link.
Great idea. I'm going to try copper pipe or pvc pipe for this tool.

@@playati24 what do mean by using a drill for the insert hole?

PVC PIPE CLAMP ON FRONT
Did you have to pull the powerhead to get the water pipe reconnected??? Mine came out with the lower.

Get PVC pipe and clamp on front.
Is it still functional
