My previous let's plays of Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne were meant to be informative and comprehensive commentaries and walkthroughs. My let's play of Dark Souls 3 and its newly released DLC, Ashes of Ariandel, will be more of that and will serve as a gameplay guide / tutorial / walkthrough / playthrough / review with commentary.
Dark Souls is an open world spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. Like Demon's Souls, Dark Souls is a brutal, dark, gothic fantasy action RPG. I could write another love letter to this game here in the description and pore over every wonderfully recognized detail, but there's not enough space to gush. What I will say is that Dark Souls is one of my favorite games ever and is at the top of its class. Dark Souls 3 is the third game in the series, adding innumerable small quality of life changes and expanding upon the series lore and captivating world building, level design, and boss fights.
Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City is the second of two DLC expansions planned for the game. It is substantially larger than Ashes of Ariandel, and ties up a lot of the series' loose ends.

An addendum to my thoughts at the end:
Miyazaki recently was quoted as saying Souls was a happy series. Could be something lost in translation. Happy is, at first glance, a weird word to use. In my Scholar of the First Sin playthrough I was complaining about how the new DS2 ending felt nihilistic and that Souls has generally been pretty hopeful, but I don't know if I'd use the word happy. Still, I can understand the gist of the sentiment.
Second, the other possibility for what I was talking about with the abyss growing wild and becoming a force for destruction is that the seal caused the abyss to grow wild by pooling up inside of humans. Maybe it was always supposed to leak out, and by sealing it inside it pooled up, took over and grew wild, overflowing, like what we saw in Oolacile.
Next, I didn't get around to it, but I've also seen it posited that our adventures in Lothric were all in the past and this ashen waste is the present along with the flameless shrine and the kiln of the first flame at the end of the game. It's hard to refute that, but also hard to support and it's one of those nebulous time is convoluted so who knows, but it's also maybe not so important. As an aside, the time is convoluted line was once clearly a throw away line to explain away multiplayer and phantom mechanics, but it's become evident more and more that there is some time wonkiness inherent to Souls. For instance, we create a causal loop after Manus drags the DS1 player character into the past and we go through all of that and kill Artorias and Manus, so I wouldn't say any generous interpretation of the timeline is off the table, and it's easily the hardest thing to pin down.
Finally, somebody else brought up something that could be interesting: Ledo may have been the friend who betrayed Havel leading to Havel's imprisonment in the tower, and I think that ties in wonderfully with another old prominent DS1 theory which positied that Havel was a part of a rebellion against the gods and that he was stashing occult weapons - weapons of dark and humanity - that could kill the gods. What if Ledo caught wind of his plans and that was the catalyst for a falling out between them? He couldn't abide Havel plotting an armed rebellion, and so locked him in the tower to rot. Just thought that was a cool interpretation.

The concept of the Abyss growing wild and out of control as a response to the seal has got me thinking. Just why would it have that kind of response? And the answer, I think, can be traced back to the very core of the series.
The intro cinematic to DS1 has that one famous that lets us know right away what state the world is now in: imbalance (With fire came disparity) and the struggle between opposites (Heat and cold, life and death, light and dark). This is the core theme of the series as represented in the Cycle itself, a never-ending wheel that goes round and round from Fire to Dark and back again. These two concepts, Fire and Dark (although I would posit that it is more correct to say Light and Dark), are constantly struggling against one another, as opposites do, and their struggle creates imbalance in the world.
What if the Abyss is the Dark's response to the abundance or longevity of Fire (or rather Light)? It is nearer the end of Gwyn's reign that we see the Abyss swallow up Oolacile, after all, and agents of the Dark always seem to arise at precisely the right moment, when the First Flame has become vulnerable. We know that the Abyss can be beaten back, but it can never be fully vanquished, as seen with the continued existence of the Chasm of the Abyss in DS1, long after the Oolacile incident. And the Fire (Light) is not so different. It manipulates people like Gwyn to fear the Dark, fear change or at least the unknown. It has its own agents who perpetuate the tale of the rekindling of the Flame so that innocents may be sacrificed to continue the Age of Fire (Light). And in the event that the First Flame goes out and an Age of Fire (Light) ends, a spark will always reignite somewhere in the Dark (according to the Fire Keeper during the End of Fire ending in DS3).
The Abyss is a tool the Dark uses to turn the wheel and continue the Cycle just as the Flame is a tool of the Light to turn the wheel in its favour.
This brings up a lot of interesting possibilities on the seal of fire, the darksign, and the nature of the Curse.

I ended my Dark Souls experience with something quite similar, although also entirely different. I put on Halflight's set, took a seat on one of Gael's boss room's dunes, and sipped on some water while I watched the world sift away, listening to T.S. Elliot's "The Hollow Men". This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.

So in the end, Miyazaki did the unthinkable. He made an entire trilogy of pure epicness and deep lore (and fabulous fashion), and the culmination of it all is the stunning reveal...
that this has been one huge fetch quest for paint.
He has thus proven without fail that fetch quests can indeed be interesting and fun. Hopefully some game devs took notes :P
What an epic ride it has been. Thank you so much, Dave, for introducing me to this series and for making these deep and analytical playthroughs.

What an end. I think binging the last few episodes I missed made it all the sweeter.
My first introduction to you was through Bloodborne I think. I fell in love with the game and your love letter style LP so much that I then went on to watch the Dark Souls LPs and even Demon's Souls.
I got Bloodborne, and despite it being my first Soulsborne game, I dove in headfirst and beat it, as well as The Old Hunters, on my own. Then DS3 was announced and I wanted to try to fight my way through that too. I've replayed it countless times by now, on several different characters.
Finding Dark Souls and Bloodborne sparked an old excitement I hadn't felt from a game in many years. Thanks for leading me to these games. They're so captivating and just leave you hungry for more. I can't wait to hear what Miyazaki's next DS type project will be. A successor to Bloodborne hopefully. I enjoyed its shieldless combat far more. If only it wasn't held hostage on the ps4, I'd have played it more than DS3.

    Theory time!
You can see, at the very end, Lothric Castle, and another place (possibly Anor Londo?) in the distance, while The Ringed City has fallen to ruin. My theory, as such, is this (thanks to other sources). The Sun dictated the Age of Fire, it preserved Anor Londo through thick and thin. Towards the end of Dark Souls 3, it is eclipsed by what I believe is the Dark Soul, gathering in the sky, eclipsing the sun in spite, Lothric now enjoys 'protection' as the centre of the Age of Dark. However, when the world ends proper, at the Kiln of the First Flame, the Ringed City is revealed, and the orb Filianore cradles serves as a 'prison' for the Dark Soul, drawing it to the Ringed City instead, preserving IT as the center of the Age of Dark, drawing all else towards it. When the prison is broken, it was already fragile, The Ringed City no longer enjoys its protection, and time catches up with the city drowning it in Ash. Lothric becomes the centre, and is.... restored.
As for possibly Anor Londo? The Profaned Flame, linked now with Sulyvahn's deeds is marked by the Moon, which holds Irithyll intact throughout everything.
Thank you for the runthrough, Scibe, you've done an amazing job, and I've had some really good food for thought between all these amazing content creators.

Dark Souls kind of reminded me of the old Legend of how the gods couldn't see into the void. yet they knew something was there but they couldn't see into the avoid at all so they look for a way fill the void lights.
so they found two elements and bound them together making life and death in this case the fire(life) and the Dark Soul(death and rebirth). Filling the void with Darkness and Light but when they did this it had caused unknown consequences that affected them as well.
the force that they Unleashed onto the void scratch far beyond that the plain that they thought it was safe but it threaten to swallow up anything that came it came contact with.
so when I think of the Dark Souls series I think of that Legend and how the gods Unleashed life and death onto the universe in this case it would be unleashing the Dark Souls onto the universe. Humans was already live within the darkness which would be Void (darkness) but the gods couldn't see into the darkness. so they need the fire to be able to see it and so they linked humans to fire to illuminate them to the gods (the curse).

I think the Hag in the Dreg Heap could be the Shrine Maiden. The Ringed City is clearly a future where the fire has gone out, the old hag ashes has a ring on it that looks like the Priestess Ring, when you kill the Shrine Maiden in the Untended Graves she drops the Priestess Ring and you can buy it from her, and we know she's undead so she can live forever. Living forever would mean that the Shine Maiden could have been the Wet Nurse for any royal family, maybe even the Yormedaars from Demons Souls (read the description of the Silver Cornet) given the few Demon's Souls references in the game (I fully believe that the Old One is the Soul Feeder from the Skull Ring description).
The only hole I've found with this theory, and it's a big one, is that the old hag knew about Lorian's besting of the Demon Prince in an age far removed from the Lothric Dynasty. Also, with Emma, she's one of few killable things in the game with a human body and size that disappears when she dies, the only other that comes to mind is the Shrine Maiden. So maybe Emma's undead and that's why she can be in the far future? She was off by herself in the chapel, possibly exiled from the castle proper for being undead some time before the Twin Princes' defection to Kaathe-like believes and motivations, meaning they wouldn't remember Emma themselves and either didn't know or didn't care about Emma's hypothetical exile.

The memories that we once had
Now that you've turned the world against me
I'm only trying to win them back
With my eyes sewn shut, to shut down and bathe in these words about me
And now you're standing alone with your eyes to the sun
That heaven and earth may strike their sounds together
Worlds are ruined this way, and we've all been there time and time again
And all the world's a stage
I existed because I dreamed, and well, I dream no more
I've given up on the entire human race

And then we get reference to blood half way through the fight? There's no way that's not eluding to bloodborne! Maybe the blood is able to do what it does in bb because of the dark soul? Also notice how guts gets more bestial when he uses the blood?
