  • Join me as I turn a patch of degraded, tropical clay into a garden!
My name is Nate and I live on my family's 18 acre farm in the southeast of Costa Rica. This channel is all about cataloging my journey to cultivating a self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle, in harmony with the land I call home.
In this video, you'll get to see the transformation of a little patch of clay next to my cabina. It's been an inspiring and fulfilling journey and I'm so excited to share it with you all.

Congrats it's all coming along very nicely! All that organic matter is going to make amazing quality soil for the crops! Looking at a reply you did regarding the plants you wanted to grow , as you know you are in a completely different climate and environment compared to a temperate environment. I'd recommend looking into more native plants especially pioneer species that can handle and grow in less than ideal conditions in order to help along with the succession process. Much love!

Such an invaluable perspective and advice, thank you! So important to respect the context and environment - you are absolutely right, I need to start focusing on native plants and species that are meant for the type of soil and the climate that im in. No need to force nature into my box of expectations. Thank you 🙏

Nice job! What do you plan to plant into these beds? Tomatoes, peppers, pipian squash, chayote?

The goal was to grow stinging nettle, alfalfa, comfrey, clover, and buckwheat (all crops that would improve the soil and also be great as mulch/fertilizer for the gardens) but I don’t think the soil is nearly healthy/fertile enough yet - basically nothing survived - so I’m currently figuring out how to pivot! Updates to come in future videos :)

Next time mix the calcium with the clay instead of putting it on the bottom of the pit. This way its faster accessible for the plants.
