  • Tinned fished chutney, or tinfish as we refer to it is almost a staple in Durban Indian homes. A quick and inexpensive option, it often serves as a midweek filler meal. Also a firm favourite of students or bachelors and is often one of the first recipes learnt! Because we've been eating it all our lives, it is also often strongly tied to nostalgia and memories of childhoods and growing up.
    Ingredients
    1 400g tinned pilchards
    1 small onion grated
    6 cloves of garlic
    2 small tomatoes grated
    2 green chillies (add more to taste)
    1 tbs mixed masala
    1/2 tsp hurdee powder
    1/2 tsp garam masala powder
    1/2 tsp dhania powder
    1/4 tsp whole jeera (optional)
    1/4 tsp mustard seeds (optional)
    1/4 cup of oil
    1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
    Squeeze of lemon juice to taste

    Here in Melbourne I bought pilchards from the South African shop. I made the curry similar to yours with yellow rice and took it to work for my colleagues to try, because they love the South African food. The nurses from Zimbabwe, Philippines, New Zealand and India loved it. The Australians were very sceptical because they said “we use it as bait, it is scavengers blah blah” some wouldn’t even try. Those who tried it, loved it. My Aussie husband absolutely loved it as well. 🤣

    Thank you ma for the lovely SA recipes. Many teachers bought those dinner sets ...R20.00 a month.For the vermicelli, I break them up first.But I did not use water for cooking .That was my fault, because it took long for it to cook and became sticky. We learn!. Tin fish sandwiches as breakfast on Durban beaches..synonymous! Stay blessed.

    Hi Aunty love watching all ur videos it's really helpful. Can you add water 2 the tomatoes when cooking?

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před rokem

      If you need to add water to cook out the tomatoes then you can but you have to make sure that all the water is cooked off before adding the tinfish in

    Hello Mrs Devi I made it into a briyani today,
    The tin fish came out beautiful
    But I want to ask like when I make chicken briyani all my spices are getting stuck at bottom of pot, which is so hard to clean, my taste is there.... Just want to know what am I doing wrong,

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 2 lety +1

      I think we shall also make tinfish biryani soon - watch out for the recipe on Sunday perhaps. But I think the problem may be not enough water when braising the "curry for the biryani". Before adding the tinfish (because this will break up) you must braise the lentils until they are done but make sure there is still some water in the "curry" then you add the tinfish and cook for a short time before taking the curry off and you can then layer in the rice and add layers of curry and layers of rice.

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, yes we make and sell to a regular customer here and he freezes them in lots of 12 in cling film and then defrosts and uses them as he requires. When warming up you have to keep them in the cling or they dry out.

      @@GaithreeDeviLuckan thank you so much for the speedy response. I love all the foods you make and most times I sort of rate myself against your cooking to see if I do it the same. Things I grew up with and ate. Most of the younger generations don't know those foods and how to cook it because they have become very westernised. By you showing that on You tube, hopefully it will help keep Indian traditions and all the traditional foods alive. Love your channel. Great stuff 👍👍

    Hello Aunty! Did you use the pilchards in tomato or chilli sauce?

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 3 lety +1

      We use tomato because our heat tolerance is a bit lower. But it’s totally up to you and how much heat you can handle.

      Its usual to have the washing machine in the kitchen in SA..especially modern kitchens in apartments and complexes.
