After all, it is only thanks to these that ships can move through what used to be solid blocks of land, and while there are thousands around the world, there are some that are a little bit more significant than others. And be it massive amounts of traffic or super cool histories, some truly are incredible, so today, grab your lifejackets and get ready for a ride as we count down the Top 15 Most Extreme Canals and Waterways!

In my humble opinion these canals and waterways are really taken for granted under valued under used and not used to their full potential if they were previously used in the past for various tasks then surely they could be used again today converted or made useful in some ways perhaps for delivery or taxi etc..

@@BigJeremyBeyer Hmmm, seems its not a canal at all. It would be the puppy ship channel. Canals generally have Lochs, The Houston ship channel does not. Panama CANAL does. But i am no expert. Also, a canal is man made, by definition, the Houston ship channel is not. The Packery (ship not puppy) channel in Corpus Christi Texas doesnt have lochs either. NOTE: Donnie Palmer is correct, it is the Houston Ship Channel. Have a nice day.

They are just waterways. Their importance is mostly valued by those who live near them and use them most. Remember, we are all people of the world who make our lives on top of the dirt of the planet. Anything we have while we are alive we cannot take with us when we die. Our most important possession is the love we have with our family, friends and neighbors. God Bless You.

This is really interesting, some of this canals are still being use, some are not, but the real question i ask, how many lives were lost in the build of all of them, i know about Panama Canal because there is where i'm from but knowing that some of them aren't being use and the lives were lost for nothing is really sad. But it's educative to know about all of them, helps learn about the world of before, how they did things and the hard work this must have been.

Northwest Passage is not a canal. If it is, then the Northeast Passage qualifies too. As we speak, Russia is building the Artic Silk Road and a $110 billion Artic megaport is 80% completed.
On cities with canals, there are a few much older cities in China which have longer canals and have more tourists annually than Venice.
And why no mention of the St.Lawrence Seaway canals?

I find it odd that until the climate change allowed for a real possibility of opening the NorthWest Passage there was no issue with anyone over Canada claiming the waterway as part of it's territory. As soon as it became a real possibility it was claimed to be an international waterway just to deny any economic benefit to Canada who would have to provide rescue services and bear the brunt of environmental cleaning if any incident requires it.

@@lyfewithpiglet582 I would rather not have Canadian taxes spent on the cleanup from wrecks there for ships going elsewhere and just using the route. Having it as Canadian waters means fees for use and those fees reduce the tax dollars needed to clean messes. Either way, Canada will have to clean up from any messes when it's used.
