    A deeply insightful book by Zupančič! It’s her best theoretical work imo. Id love to hear your complete analysis of it, as some of the later parts of it are quite dense with lacanian jargon and are a bit abstract (particularly when she brings Deleuze, Žižek, and Badiou together in her discussion of Being).

    Hey Julian,
    Can you make a lecture about the point of psychoanalysis? I really tried getting into it, but its usefulness escapes me. The concepts seem naive and historically, psychoanalysis needed decades to stop pathologizing homosexuality, now they fail the same way with transidentity, while every other branch of psychology adapts more quickly to new evidence (and the needs of the patient, while their wellbeing seems to be only of secondary importance). Psychoanalysis seems inherently reactionary when it comes to queer people and a method of bullying them back into the heteronormative matrix.
    Now, since my most beloved theorists like Zizek, Butler, Marcuse and Adorno use it extensively, there is probably more to it, but what psychoanalysis does that isn't already done with other methods of analysis is unclear to me. Can you give an explanation or an introduction into the emancipatory potential of it?
    Thank you for your work and i wish you a good day.

      There's a quote by Jacques Lacan that says "Any psychoanalyst who cannot reach the subjectivity of his time must renounce the practice of psychoanalysis.” (sorry about the translation, i couldnt find the official one in english, but i hope you can get the idea)... This quote makes me think that a conservative or reactionary psychoanalyst completely missed the point of what psychoanalysis should be about: a dialectical work, through words, seeking to mitigate excessive suffering, through the truth of each subject. it should never be a normative practice, because that is basically what makes people suffer - having to renounce their own truth to adjust to a hegemonic one.
      But, unfortunatelly, there will always be, in every field, people who are more concerned in mantaining power over other groups than with the ethics of their practice.

    Around 10:56 ... Does it have to be prohibited to be symbolized? Why?

    • @kaykek7174
      @kaykek7174 Před 19 dny +1

      If I understand correctly, the prohibition leads to repression which in turn leads to symbolization. Without repression, a sensation we perceive as sexual is nothing more than a sensation.

    • @R-01-mc4sk
      @R-01-mc4sk Před 19 dny

      @@kaykek7174 Thanks, that's how I understood it but I wasn't sure. I find it interesting that for Freud/Lacan/etc it has to be prohibited in order to be symbolized. Couldn't it be symbolized in a more "positive" way? Like, encouraging it rather than prohibiting? Or would that be considered a kind prohibition too through a different point of view? Hope the question makes sense

    • @kaykek7174
      @kaykek7174 Před 19 dny +1

      @@R-01-mc4sk In reality, yes, such as by a parent who explains that sexuality is nothing bad. The thing with psychoanalysis is that it hinges on many assumptions especially when it comes to repression so it should be enjoyed with more than a tinge of salt.
