Tapers are truly some of the most amazing people to ever exist. We owe them everything
Yep I'm surprised Jerry didn't say something like "they ensured the music will live on, for themselves and for those who never heard it. If not for them, there would be no record of the soundwaves that went through the atmosphere all those nights. Those vibrations were important, man, we were trying to do something with those, and what we were doing for our live audience THEN can now be done for a countless number of people, as long as there are people around who listen to this kind of music."
We have hours upon hours upon hours of live dead recordings thanks to them. Wothout them, we'd only have a few of the professional recordings, and the studio stuff. Their live performances are way better than their studio work
In Portland every Saturday is a show called "Grateful Dead and Friends" and they play shows, compare shows, analyze every lick from every direction... Think if we only had the studio albums! My gawd this world would be bereft of so much amazing music.
@@kerrimccabe3883 do you so sniff each others farts and see who's smell best as well?
Once they got a miracle ticket it was time to give it back💝
"They paid to hear the music and after it's over, it's gone. why not be able to take it home with you??" 💕 Jer-besr!!!
That’s one of the reasons Jerry and the rest of the dead are legends. They truly cared about their audience and knew that even tho it’s the music business, treat your fans with respect and everyone wins
this guy waas awesoome!
@johnwilkes...
I know! How freaking cool is that? I bet he treats people just like he wants to be treated and that's just the way this guy is, no matter what!!
@@mattryan6886yeah, heroin for breakfast yummmm
Jerry was a saint in my opinion. He seems like he had a kind heart.
Jerry absolutely had the right philosophy about live recordings. The live music is what makes the Grateful Dead so special. You could hear the same song played live from 10 different shows and each one will be unique.
That’s different from today. Now everyone does, and it hurts your ability to view the performances, and becomes a problem. The invention of phones…
I just watched and listened to my first song from them, and the audience was high off acid, and enjoying the music. No one had their tech out, it was pure happiness for them.
@MunchTheRabbit the taper section was set up initially and then moved so there weren't microphone stands everywhere with angry tapers popping balloons and hushing people or giving mean looks. Sometimes patch cords were run out and people could plug in, atleast when digital taping began. Sometimes Dan Healy experimented with short range/low power FM broadcasts at venues so people could record the broadcast there. I think the FCC had issues with that. Sometimes the SBD recordings were given to some people and they made copies at home and sent copies to others but even within a few generations the sound would suffer on the analog recordings. If people made some copies from the original and then sent the original/1st or 2nd Gen from original to the next person and they repeated, so many more recordings circulated that didn't sound so bad. The highest generation tape of SBD that I ever got was 5th or 6th generation and they were far from pristine. Audience tapes circulated to probably more but the microphones and all other equipment varied in quality and so the tapes varied in quality and if someone was using cheap little mics that were discreetly worn attached to eyeglasses or whatever and taped from a rather noisy section or area without a good mix, the tapes were only tolerable if you had been there and it was more of a memory than quality listening experience. People recorded GD shows before it was permitted but things were never absurd like all these modern shows where 5,000 bad bozos have phones in the air. The tapers sure would do a triple back flip to block balloons and quietly deflate them. When a Ballon hit a mic, sounded like someone falling down the staircase at home, most everyone else had a blast except for filthy undercover types and maybe someone who is at their first show and not getting it yet or someone who never will understand or someone on dumbing down drugs like alcohol. Ok, I forgot where I was going with this. Way past my bedtime.
@@davidr1676 Wow thank you for that comment.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a long comment that was actually interesting.
Do you still have any of those 6th gen tapes. And was the video recordings just people filming a tv for 4 layers? I could imagine a tunnel effect that moved a lot in those last gen tapes. Also, how did the mics pop the balloons? Were they the ones attached to the ear or were they boom or attached to the camera itself?
Thank you, how young are you btw?
To be fair tho those "10 versions" will be very similar to the average person. Unless your spanning years.
One of the most brilliant stealth marketing techniques ever
For real. The Betty Boards alone hit like a bomb when they surfaced. It made everyone who heard them wanna see for themselves.
Yeah now they're making an utter fortune by releasing box sets of shows that are only desired because of the bootleg culture. They release like 4 vinyl sets a year, and even more cds. They're making an utter killing since big fans are buying the same songs dozens of times.
Also it creates an amazing historical record where the dead is by far the most documented band. The tapes is why they have the massive fanbase they do. Every Dave picks cd sells out at 25,000 copies and 4 releases a year. That would never happen if it wasn't for allowing taping.
Absolutely. Just one of hundreds of reasons the Dead are America's greatest band of all time.
@@simonemurray1345Well the real reason is the music speaks for itself. 💀💜
@@simonemurray1345well after Jerry died the money vultures moved... Never realized how many items have grateful dead licenses almost as bad as Kiss. They lost me with the merchandise when they started partnering with major fashion houses like Amiri
As a 27 year old, I'm very thankful for the tapers and the deads approval of it. Unfortunately Jerry and I never walked this earth at the same time. But I'm very thankful and fortunate to still be able to play and sing along with the great music he and his pals made. ❤
My brother was a taper...he took me to my one and only show in 94 Buckeye Lake, Ohio. Best concert ever. My brother has since passed away, but thank goodness for all of the music. Miss you Jimmy and Jerry!✌️🫶😎💫
Yes great show I was there ⚡✌️
❤️
i was there man! such a great show. traffic played rainmaker and it rained!
Glad you saw a show with your bro !
I fkn love Jerry Garcia and his outlook on basically everything. He’s was and is a good guy.
Bootlegging music is completely legal in Germany. We always got A+ quality from any band from over there. Proper release quality gigs.
I did too! Until a few days ago when I heard his take on rap ‘music’
And I could not more strongly disagree with him at all
But, he said all that a long time ago and Id like to imagine if he were here today he’d have a much different opinion
@@JoeSourBauer both are poetry. The GD are real music, not just a beat and a base line.
@@JoeSourBaueryou are right about the time he said that about rap, Jerry was an amazing and awesome musician, I went to 30 Grateful Dead shows from 1983-1994 they were the best times of my life, however Jerry never got to see what an amazing lyricist someone like 2Pac was and became, well he does now because they are both legends and jamming in their own way in Heaven.
Jerry was a special soul. 💜
Jerry was a real one.
His heart is so real 🥰
he was pure art embodied in a human
This is why I love Jerry Garcia 😢RIP to a legend
Taping a show (or 500) was no easy task, and commemorated an event for future enjoyment! Jerry was a clever, and intelligent man. Geez I miss him!
Probably one of the best things he, his bandmates, and all the other musicians who allow taping, to come from that music scene they created/insires, especially the social aspect of it. It helped that Jerry made his own bootlegs, taping some of the bluegrass bands he would go see, probably to commemorate the show, and also to help him learn how to play the music. I love having current shows at the click of a mouse, but I got to meet several interesting people (fellow music lovers), and also got turned on to great music (new to me), from trading, hoarding, and passing around different performances. Even today, just seeing the gold wrapper from a new, blank set of 90min Maxell XL2’s takes me back to good times had with friends. Oh, and if you’re a taper, simply, thanks!😊
Yup 🌹🌹🌹
@@cleech74
Wow that's crazy cause I hooked up a CD player the other day and all the burns on CD Maxell played perfectly after not being played for years. Gold disc - the best and they're all live JGB and Grateful Dead 🌹🌹🌹
Jerry is spot on ! What an amazing guitarist & musician !
Really miss him. No matter the season. Cheers and gratitude to all the tapers and archivists.
Such a wonderful kind soul Uncle Jerry 🫶💀
Greatest gift the Dead ever gave us fans! Thanks guy's.
Can't believe it's gonna be 28 years tomorrow that we lost Jerry. Feels like yesterday. 😥 Miss ya Jer & thanks for the music!
Damn. That just hit me hard.
You're old. Lol.
I kid, my first show was 95, thank God I got to see Jerry. Dancing in the rain at 3 rivers. That day changed the entire course of my life. No way to overstate how heavy it changed my life.
My wife and I went out for dinner a couple weekends ago, rented a hotel in the city. We parked in the hotel parking lot and it dawned on me that we were sitting in the exact parking lot that we parked in when I went to my first show. Hotel we rented was across from the new pirate stadium, across from the old 3 River stadium which is long gone now.
It BLEW ME AWAY. I've thought back on that night so many times over the years, really blew my mind to randomly ended up standing in the same spot almost 30 years later, happily married, all grown up....still a raging deadhead lol.
I miss Jerry and the good old days
It really helps that the Dead are (were) such a "live band." Most other bands don't want you taping their shows because they feel that people wouldn't come to their shows if they could hear it live. Every Dead show is different. People have gone to literally hundreds of shows and still want more. It's what they do. Who cares if you have Winterland '74 Estimated Prophet? The next time they play, you're still going to want to be there.
"Who cares if you have Winterland '74 Estimated Prophet?"
I do. The song didn't come out until 77 so it would be interesting to hear a version that doesn't exist
@@sinane.y HAHA! I had Terrapin Station, I should've known that.
@@sinane.ywait til you hear this ‘77 Throwing Stones I got
Love you Jerry you changed my life and I was born in 2004 so you where gone but ur vibrations still fill my mind and heart every day peace and love to all see you soon dead and company
Such a down to earth man who was born to wear the shoes he wore in life. This man had his destiny laid out before him from birth. John Lennon, jerry garcia, and bob marley .. my holy trinity. I don't idolize any celebrities, but if i did it would be these three
Each of their performances were unique in terms of no planned set lists. They deserved to have their music taped because they could shine in so many different ways on different nights. They were not falsely spooked by any fears of scarcity. They knew they were surrounded by abundance. An abundance of good will from the fans, and an abundance of musical fulfillment from playing in the band.
Isn’t it wonderful that all the music is now out there for us all to enjoy. I was just reminiscing with some friends about a show that we saw together back in 1977. Then I just searched for it, and listened to the entire show. What a blessing!
Especially cool about Dead shows, because no two shows are alike (damn, no two SONGS are even the same!).
Hands down best business model of any band in history. Managed to sustain themselves and a massive crew for years without any of the headaches that come with mainstream success.
Well... aside from the drug addictions, that is.
"But other than THAT, Mrs Lincoln, how did u like the play?
@@smartalek180 I fail to see how addiction has anything to do with their business model. If you take a cross section of any amount of typical people in any high pressure industry you'll find an increased incidence of addiction. Take a look at the stats for addiction in the medical or law profession and you'll find them quite comparable.
"without any of the headaches that come from mainstream success" lmao not quite.
@@methyod as I said "sustained themselves for years." Post In the Dark doesn't count.
God bless you Jerry for your kindness & generosity ...take care young people ..
I love the answer "once we played it, we're done with it". And the next show may contain the same songs, but will still be different. It also just promoted and showed people the difference between their live performances and studio recordings.
Jerry was the fucking coolest
Thsnks Jerry, wish you were here❤
Thanks for the memories Jerry RIP.
We owe the tapers for many hours of shows me would have never heard otherwise. God bless all of you who brought that heavy equipment and held it up all night
Amen 🙌
Gerry loves the music that he played and that shows it
God bless you man!!!
Jerry G so right about this!
Hoarding? Lol 😂 Strangers would give me tapes from the start when I was a desperate 14 yo Deadhead hot for the 🎶 Live! I will Love Our Jerry always!❤
Thank you to Jer & Tapers everywhere!🎉😅
Jerry was very careful with language and did not speak sloppily.
Media mail ❤
Such a chill cat and prolific musician in different musical genres
Miss you much Papa Bear! Thanks for the best times of my life! R.I.P. LOVE YOU JERRY!
Miss you, Jerry....
Just another reason why we love Jerry and the Boys!
The Grateful Dead..... There is NO other band that compares. If you pay for the ticket why shouldn't you be able to record that show and take it home. Only Jerry and the band at that time were the only ones that allowed that. That I know of anyway. ONE HELL OF A BAND!!!! R.I.P.M.F ROCK.IN.PEACE.MY.FRIEND
Jerry, so articulate
I like the way he talked about taping - "Taking the music you paid for home with you". I was hoping he'd say something like "They're gonna tape anyway, so we may as well have the tapes sound good by not policing it", but I hear the experience of many deadhead tapers was decidedly mixed even into the 80s and 90s.
This is one band wish I could have seen live Jerry was one of a kind never never be another Jerry
Miss you Jerry ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks tappers, I can listen to the best eras almost every show and can listen to all the shows I went to 1988-95 !!
Having a section specifically for tapers was next level.
Wait, did they actually do that? Or do you just mean conceptually?
@@TheJackOfFools literally. The area behind the soundboard was for people to record. They had an entire community that would tape shows and then trade each other's recordings all across the country.
@@mattwingo89 And you know with how big camcorders were back then, thats a huge deal. Being able to set up like a tripod and not have to lug them things the whole time? And power? Thats super cool. And you know, I think that could work even today. Everyone has a pretty decent recording device in their pockets, but if you were cool about it like these guys? I bet the vast majority of people would keep it off social media and like CZcams and stuff. I mean honestly I think most people wouldn't bother recording, they'd still just want to enjoy the show.
Of course I also think that any musician or performer who wanted people to be reasonable about the recording thing would need to be reasonable in return. If it costs a grand just to get in, and you go around canceling stops on a whim or just generally being entitled or a jerk to the fans? Well I dont know if those folks need to worry about people spreading the videos, cuz they already got paid. :D
Jerry was always one of the best interviews in the business. So humble and full of wisdom.
Thanks Jerry for just knowing and being cool about it.
I would such love to hear what he'd have to say abt everything going on in our world today. Leave aside the musical genius, he was just such a bright, articulate, analytically brilliant mind...
Humanity is benefiting (and will continue to), because they allowed tapers to tape at their shows.
Nothing cooler than a true artist and human being ❤❤❤
The best is we get to hear that show again! For those of us who couldnt see that show love it. And we will try to see a show when we can!
The Dead were in a unique position
to encourage the bootlegging of their
shows.
It actually helped them out in the long run.
Can't say how many parking lot tapes were traded of live shows! It was the greatest thing because you listen to these concerts forever. You go to Grateful Dead concert, you love it, it's a great performance, great music and you remember every show forever, listening to a live tape.
I think it was New Year's Eve, six of us couldn't get into a show. We're all tripping, packed in the car but the driver had a tape of the last live concert. He parked in front of a brick wall in a parking lot he found some where and put in the tape. We sat there for three hours and we all felt like we WERE at the concert! It was a great - and never forgot it 🤣
Awesome! Jerry Garcia is a legend; this clip says a lot about Jerry and why he is a legend!
I just love that outlook. To see it as the audience paid for the music being created that night therefore deserve to have audio of it is so refreshing. R.I.P Jerry thanks for being the trailblazer of the music genre I most prefer and setting a righteous enough example that others wanted to follow and carry on what you helped start.
The more Grateful Dead live recordings i heard, the more i wanted to see them live. Garcia was unconventional for a reason and his fans, of which i am one, loved him for it. An American icon.
wonderful!! and NOW there are many awesome recordings... The Dead were so cool man. Freaking awesome people.
Thank you Jerry, thank you Tapers, thank you Deadheads and Future Deadheads ❤💙🎅🏿
Cant believe he's gone....when i see him in videos like this just havin a conversation,.....man...R.I.P. Jerry Garcia❤ Thanks man!
All band should take a lesson from this interview 🙏 RIP brother Jerry ✨️✌️🇺🇸
love me some Jerry & hug a taper today
This was borne completely from Jerry’s generosity. Never in a million years did the thought cross his mind for the band to tape the shows and sell them.
Exactly. When money isn't your motivator things like this don't even occur to you. We can (and have) all learn a lot from Jerry.
I love and miss you Jerry!!! It's because of people like them we have so many renditions of a legacy. #deadhead4life
We all love the bootleg tape , almost as much as we love Jerry , may he rock in peace !!
Something so hard to explain to others - but the boys changed the world. Literally.
Dude's THE legend
Every show was different. Its why i and other fans will listen to ten versions of the same song and know our favorites.
Jerry had one of the kindest hearts a person could ever have. He'll always be missed. RIP Jerry
Jerry being one level higher than everyone else, as usual. We have some amazing footage from a time that has long since passed thanks to those tapers.
Jerry always a cool dude. Share it !
Ty Jerry❤. Ty very much Sir❤. Ty for all of this❤.
I Love and Miss You Jerry, Everyday!!! (~);} ♥️💀⚡🌹🎶🤙
Thank you, Jerry!
So many of my music heroes are the brightest & most articulate people in interviews I have ever seen; often more well composed, knowledgeable, and present than politicians, who are basically paid to do that for a living.
Jerry rest easy brother! Peace & Love -AE
It will also keep the legacy of his music alive for a very long time
God Bless you Jerry.
Thank goodness for the tapers, lol. I would have missed all this ish if it weren’t for them. I would feel so empty and sad and wouldn’t even know why. 💕
Wise man. We liked you even more.
Now I remember why I loved the Dead so much!
Spread love only and watch how great your life becomes.
Man, I love Jerry Garcia!
History has remembered Jerry has a burned out hippie but there are dozens of interviews just like this one that shows just how intelligent and humble the man was. Truly an American treasure.
Jerry is one of the most intelligent person in the music industry. Highly intelligent and very interesting in his interviews
Amazing band so humble and full of Music ❤🎶
Without the massive archive created by all those tapers, would the Dead still be relevant today? Jerry was so far ahead of his time and bless those tapers who made sure the music never stopped ❤ ✌️
This was My Calling in Life... 1000s of Hours of my Life's Peak Musical Experiences Documented for All.
I was super surprised when I saw Terrapin Station live, and there were dozens of professional tapers, mics on stands & soundboards, everywhere! 😂
What a performance!!!
Jerry truly is a king
Perfect example of the reason we like Jerry Garcia. Straight talker that makes common sense despite any mass hysteria about something.
Jerry was the sound patriarch of this legendary band. When he died, some of their cannon philosophy, vibe, and life of this band died too
It was an underground world back then. You can't imagine how cool it was to know a dead head with a lot of concert tapes in the 1980's. It was an underground world back then and I knew a kid like that. He went to so many shows, that he was a patron more often than someone who just buys an album.
God I love this man so much
Love!
Always a great dude. If he was alive today all dead shows would still be free to download on line like they used to be.
Jerry is right 👍❤
Jerry's Spirit was truly unique.
Miss you, Gary! ❤❤❤
Tapers section was groundbreaking and very fun. Hours of trading cassette tapes! Spreading the joy!
Having been in and off with the GD over time, this was a great way of preserving their legacy. We can listen to random shows from 69 and the music isn't ever truly gone. It was a really cool point of view.
The Greatful Dead are America's house band with great originals and hundreds of covers. Thanks to them and the tapers, you can find recordings of shows you attended. RIP Jerry. I miss seeing you preform.
I'm so old I remember waiting for the Deadbase every year.
