  • From writer Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip), Harlem is a new comedy following a group of stylish and ambitious best girlfriends in Harlem NYC, the mecca of Black culture in America. Camille is a popular young anthropology professor at Columbia with extensive knowledge of the dating norms of many cultures, but has a hard time navigating her own love life; Tye is a successful, queer dating app creator who prefers keeping vulnerability-and romantic partners-at arm’s length; Quinn is a hopeless romantic and trust fund fashion designer who is trying to give back to the world while running a struggling business; Angie is a confident, vibrant, and filter-free singer and actress who also lives rent-free and fabulously with Quinn. Together, they level up from their 20s into the next phase of their careers, relationships, and big city dreams.

      I agree. There are several Black female led TV shows that are reminiscent of Insecure. Starz has Run the World, BET+ has Bigger and Twenties, both of which are really good shows. With Insecure in its final season, I hope there will be more TV/flim projects with Black women at the helm to pick up where Insecure leaves off. I, too, will give Harlem a chance. The cast alone is impressive.

    I’m reading the comments and I hate when y’all compare shows, like there can’t be multiple shows about black girlfriends. No, it isn’t Run the World. HARLEM was in development a year or so before Run the World premiered on STARZ.

    • @alexisfuller731
      @alexisfuller731 Před 2 lety +9

      Now you knew folks were going to compare this to Run the World because the vibes are similar and the city is the SAME…I have room to watch both and this looks better than Run the World to me (which I liked overall, but something didn’t flow for me as well). The general public typically has no idea which show concept was created/pushed first 🤷🏽‍♀️

    The show isn’t bad. My issue with this show is the same one I have for all the others including Insecure. They represent a certain type of black woman. Out of like 5 shows by now…you would think more black women would get representation. I don’t know if it is differences in generation but I’m closer to Megan’s age and still feel like our age group is not properly represented. I think it’s fine to have shows fir 20s and 30s. But what about black women in their 40s. We aren’t dead yet. I’m thinking if creating something for us since I’m a writer. Also, everybody isn’t from LA or NY …so there is no representation on that end either. LA and NY has its own thing that no one else can relate to. I’m black but I don’t really relate to these other black women because I’m not living the LA or NY lifestyle. But yeah…I’m writing some things myself to show a bit more representation…not saying it will turn into anything but I have to try.

    A strong BLACK WOMAN that knows who she is and what she is, don't lay with woman and flop around with men and she has a strong connection with God. This is just my opinion as a black woman and I don't disrespect myself and other women by calling them the B-word, N-word, and any other words that would be degrading and disrespectful as oneself of being a BLACK WOMAN. My opinion, so I won't be watching this show or any other show that is degrading to black women and men, there is enough out there for the next generation to see. When will black actors and actresses stop allowing Hollywood to make blacks degrade themselves, even African movies are the same it's just African actors and actresses. Just my opinion.

      Many people have focused on the negative image portrayed of Black men in this series, but it is also an insult of Black women. These are not the Black women in my family and community.

    Speaking from a woman that resides and worked in Harlem for many years, I will definitely watch. I love watching First Wives Club. Jill Scott and gang nailed it. I hope this show does well and represents.

    LOL I'm gonna watch it, but it does remind me of Run the World. It'll be hard to escape that comparison with a View moderator attached (Whoopi, where Run the World had Rosie). I enjoyed Run the World, but I found myself needing more, much like I do with Insecure. Maybe this show will give me that "more" that I wanted- and if not... then maybe all three combined will give me enough.
