  • Episode II covers the midway part of our journey across the Little North. Join us as we attempt to cross the height of land and reach the headwaters of the Throat River. This section is the greatest unknown of our journey and promises to be the biggest challenge.
    LITTLE NORTH chronicles a 450km canoe journey across Canada's Little North, a vast wilderness sprawling for over a million square kilometers in the northern reaches of Ontario and Manitoba. The adventure is centered on the Cat and Throat River watersheds of Northwestern Ontario. In an attempt to retrace portions of a long forgotten fur trade route, we paddle upstream on the Cat, cross the seldom travelled height of land and then descend the Throat from its headwaters to confluence.
    The area is steeped in first nation use and some sections are still traveled to access hunting and fishing grounds. Other sections have been lost to the ravages of time, and retracing these historic routes is no easy task. Few travel the remote waterways that crisscross this expansive wilderness, but those who do, are rewarded with unparalleled solitude and seclusion.

      I still laugh at the idea of this play.... LOL. Honey Powder is a game change, miles ahead of powdered PB. We got powered lard this past season too. Really stepped up the simple, yet tasty backcountry baking game. I think it's time to get a quick backcountry cooking series going.....

      Yeah, I love em too! Unfortunately the maps take me hours to make, so in the interest of time, I only made the intro maps, and you can loosely follow along from there. This trip was 450km, so I only made a general overview, as a more detailed map for each section would have added an extra week of work. Now, if I had a way to streamline it......

    Absolutely epic. Another fantastic episode. I was imagining the pain and aches my legs would have after slogging it through and over those log jams and blow downs, still a lot of hard work even when using modern equipment. I often wonder what it must have been like back in the fur trade days, portaging the pelts and other goods that were traded all over that region. It's no surprise that so many European explorer's and traders often gave up going back to live in Montreal and other "modern" cities that were in their infancy; trading the strict Catholic lifestyle in the society of early Quebec for *TRUE FREEDOM* in the majestic untamed wilderness was more than likely a very easy choice to make... Again, outstanding production quality!

      @ExploreTheBackcountry  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks so much! It's crazy to think how things were back in the day. Laden with heavy bales of fur, you'd only hope the trails were a little more clear, else I can't imagine bushwhacking with all that. you'd sink halfway through the muskeg!

    • @ExploreTheBackcountry
      @ExploreTheBackcountry  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah, I have a collection of wooden ones. Depends on the trip. Leah did use her Cherry Ottertail for all the open water paddling, so a good 50% or more. The wood splinters and frays too much when subjecting it to rapids and low water. The plastic tips are much more durable when dealing with the sloggy sections.

    I bought one of those reflector ovens, haven't used it yet, but my first reaction was to add another rod nearest the front of the oven. Then I thought perhaps only two rods are provided because most of the heat is at the back of the over and your pot shouldn't extend too far beyond the second rod. But I see that your pie plate sticks out well beyond the second rod. I've decided not to add a third rod until I try it out. Any thoughts, insights?

      Unfortunately your feet just get wet wading through the water but we always have dry shoes we change into at camp. As for clothes, we always wear rain pants and jackets. Lately, we’ve been using level six rain gear because it has gaskets on the wrists and neck and wait, and we wear gortex rain pants. Mine are from outdoor research (still going strong after 7 years of bush) and brad has Cabellas gortex

      So I have not paddled any of Swifts new layups. I have paddled a Carbon from the late Composite Creations. I'm not sure how the layup directly compares, but they're pretty durable, alas with their own wear and tear maintenance requirements. The prospector design is universal across all major manufacturers and IMO is the best hull for tackling the most varied challenges. Ultimately the layup will depend upon what you want to subject your hull too.
