- We name this musical piece, ‘The Chameleon Song’. Just like গিরগিটি or a Chameleon, the composition changes its colour from one of love song of a বিচ্ছেদ tradition to a song of alienation and displacement (ঝাড়খন্ডে বানালি পরদেশী নিজ ঘরে and we add the lines জঙ্গলে, পর্বতে, কৃষকে বানালি পরদেশী নিজ ঘরে in continuation to the spirit that the song harbours).
গিরগিটি the title piece or the leading song
is a love song of কৃষ্ণ বিরহ। কৃষ্ণ as the গিরগিটি, keeps changing colours and his intimate loyalties/faith. Although he wishes to remain faithful to রাধা the ধনী in the song, and build a home with her; like the nature of a chameleon he cannot help change colours, and suffers from ভীষণ জ্বালা.
If we think of this song as a dialogue, the narrative changes to a রাধা বিরহ song where রাধা suffers ভীষণ জ্বালা because of Krishno's Girgiti/Chameleon-like nature. Transmissions through oral traditions are of curious and creative nature for it reaches the aural differently, often taking new turn in meaning-making. The song came to us as গিরগিটির ভীষণ জ্বালা and not গিরগিটি ভীষণ জ্বালা. It makes meaning to us in the way we have listened to it and sing it. গিরগিটির ভীষণ জ্বালা আর গাঁথিবো ফুলের মালা গো…for now, we choose to stand by it.
Why do we sing what we choose to sing, requires this clarification and a rather long description although we are not unaware that seldom someone will read or listen or take the effort to understand why and how of a song or may be just ‘listen’ to the musical piece. Our civilisation has more or less successfully managed to naturalise a fast, frail and quickly shifting attention span in times now. Yet it is our pleasure to still indulge in thinking and write about our thoughts/interpretations behind the song composition. So we continue writing…
The later part of the piece, ঝাড়খন্ডে বানালি পরদেশী নিজ ঘরে, sings of the politics of eviction- the hatred and the cruel state of affairs that men have brought upon men and the nature that surrounds homes and living. We have heard the song in Gari Lohardaga, a documentary film. It was sung by Ram Doyal Munda, an eminent academician, anthropologist and a Jharkhand Mukti Andolon activist. If not written, the song was at least sung by him as far as can be remembered. It was composed and sung widely during the years of Jharkhand Mukti Andolon.
ঝাড়খন্ডে বানালি পরদেশী নিজ ঘরে is placed in juxtaposition to গিরগিটি, the love song of Bengali folk traditions where the loved ones swear not to part with one another for life. The two songs, speaking of love and ‘separation’ came to us seamlessly as one single piece to map the land with her culture of affection and affliction; the land from the days of Ulgulan movement of Birsa Munda, who faced the torment of dismemberment and threats of eviction from his own people, his land, rivers, forests and fields that rock the cradle of existence.

অসাধারণ! প্রথম ধ্বনি ছবি কোমলগান্ধার মনে পড়ালো। কোন দেশটা ঠিক নিজের দেশ??? পুরো ভাবনা, রূপায়ণ মুগ্ধ করল আবার ও। গান নিয়ে বলার ধৃষ্টতা নেই। তবে বর্ণ অনন্য হয়ে উঠুক, এই কামনা করি।
