Today we take a very, very close look at the recent Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms, and in particular The Blancpain × Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Arctic Ocean
Following the insanely successful Moonswatch release, the very first collaborative effort of this kind, where Omega teamed up with Swatch - we are now presented with this Blancpain x Swatch release.
ARCTIC OCEAN SO35N100
Case material: beige Bioceramic case including crown
Case diameter: 42.3 mm
Case thickness: 14.4 mm
Lug-to-lug distance: 48.0 mm
Lug width: 21.2 mm
Water resistance: 50 fathoms (91 m / 300 ft / 9 bar)
Glass: biosourced material with anti-scratch coating
Hands, hour markers, 60 minutes diving scale: Grade A Super-LumiNova®
Bezel: one-direction rotating bezel in beige Bioceramic material with anti-scratch coating insert in orange.
Strap: NATO strap made from recycled fishing nets removed from the sea
The metal dial is printed in several layers of color creating a sort of fume effect. A special symbol can be found on the bottom part of the dial with The words “NO RADIATIONS” below the logo. This is a nod to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms NORAD, which featured this symbol, clearly indicating that the dial wasn’t using any radioactive materials for the lume. The one-direction rotating beige-colored Bioceramic bezel, and biosourced glass are treated with an anti-scratch coating. The SISTEM51 mechanical movement is visible thanks to a transparent sapphire glass and features an illustration of the Arctic Ocean and the Dendronotus Frondosus nudibranch in digital print. The movement has a lovely 90-hour power reserve.

It seems that of the main watch outlets, the vast majority state that the case can absolutely not be removed without destroying the watch, thereby implying that the movement can not be replaced. Some leave the door a little bit open for the future with a bit of wishful thinking more than fact based conclusions. Only one outlet completely confirms having it checked with Swatch that it CAN work, yet another (mainstream) outlet which is very close to the Swatch group also confirms checking with Swatch stating it can NOT be replaced. So we have confirmations that it is possible and impossible to replace the movement... madness. I think your approach is sensible here and I agree that - if it can be replaced - they should clearly state that as this seems to be one of the major criticisms towards this release (other than the dubious color choices and the price). Your approach is rational, good luck with that here on the CZcamss :-D
A grey watch case with black dial would look killer. They could have nicknamed it The Killer Whale. 😊 I’m the same, I like the Arctic and Antarctic models best. But not any of the colours.
Wait, you also made another video of cooking/food with this watch too? How loud is this movement? Louder than ETA 7750/SW510?
The Sizzle & Watch episode is with the standard Speedmaster :-) The sistem51 is just as loud as it gets… especially the rotor hard not to hear it 😅
Cool review, luck you to get this for hands on! Was not aware the movement is not replaceble though
Thanks man! I walked into the Swatch Boutique at 5PM and they had this (and some other colors) in stock. They seem to get replenished fairly often (they mentioned “three times a week” in the shop)
My understanding is that the back of the watch is removalable and that there are independent repairers that will attempt servicing / replacement of the movement. There has been no indication that Swatch have any interest in doing this. The Blancpain x Swatch is basically disposable 'white goods'....
Thank you. Removable case back or not is indeed irrelevant if Swatch is not going to repair it for you and all you have is some faint hope that your local MacGuyver can possibly try to fix things up 😅
did you even try to remove the case back before commenting on that?
Thank you for asking. I did not void the warranty of my watch, that is a step that can be completely avoided if there was clear communication on the repairability topic. Not sure if you watched the full video, but removing the caseback or not is besides the point I’m trying (failing?) to make. The question, which remains unanswered, is if Swatch will be able to, or be willing to, repair your watch for you. There is complete silence on that - which is odd given the branding surrounding this release.
