I am having an issue with the horizontal stabilisation not working when my tank moves forwards or backwards. Could this be due to an excessively heavy turret?

Yes, if it doesn't stay in position add more gyros
If it's too jittery remove some or reduce strength

I haven't had time to get on trailmakers yet but when I do the first thing I'll do is try that

I just tried adding more gyros like you said and it works like a charm. This is so much better than the servo compass method.
