just something about these guys is genuinely hilarious. they are all relatively normal people but somehow make it interesting every video/podcast. it is honestly a fresh of breath air on the internet with everyone trying to play into a âcharacter.â anyways I loved this video and tbh all the ideas would work well as a stand alone video especially the odd man out game with someone trying to guess.

Nerd moment: in Greek the root word for athlete just means competitor for a prize. The context was more gladiator/Olympic types of events so it lines up more with the physical side of things but technically it makes sense being applied to esports.

i disagree with saying professional esports players shouldn't be taken as seriously as professional athletes, but to actually refer to them as "athletes" makes no sense, since "athlete" literally means someone who is "proficient in sports or other forms of physical exercise," which is not even the case for many gamers

14:58 I think the sticking point with the whole âe-sports and athletesâ things is that we just co-opted that language from real life sports which more typically require high levels of physical exertion because those were already quite popular. At the end of the day though, athletic sports (soccer, basketball), e-sports (like Smash and the FGC) and those âborderlineâ sports (bowling, darts) are just competitive games at the end of the day. If anything, it might be more useful to borrow the language of video games! Letâs start calling professional athletes gamers đ
I quite liked how the game changed every once and a while. It helped keep the video getting dry with just the same types of questions and answers the whole way through.
To: The Underdogs
I personally think the problem with the esports question is the phrasing. I do believe that esports are sports, or at the very least are just as hard as sports. I mean you have to dedicate your life to the game to constantly be improving at it and what not just to be in the top 1% so you can do well in pro tournaments, just like with regular sports. My problem though is with the term "athlete". Athlete in of itself implies physical activity and physical exercise. Even when the term "athletic" is used to describe somebody's body shape and what not it is referring to physical strength and the ability to compete in physical sports. Since esports is all mental strength and not physical strength, esports players thus wouldn't be athletes even though esports are on the same level as regular sports in terms of the level of play and thus should be seen as equals.
