In this episode, I take you back in time to when the touring first came into the workshop for a simple engine bay clean up, which quickly turned into a lot more than I was expecting.
Once I get you back up to speed, I try, along with some friends to get the preface lift engine in a facelift car running once again.

My guy was living in Spain but without the S. :(
I was going to get a touring but it sold, this one is the best I’ve seen
Cheers Dillan!
After seeing that he installed everything right away without making sure the engine started I thought either he is extremely confident or hasn't done this before. My question was answered. Thank goodness for knowledgeable friends and the internet. Glad to see it run and drive
Haha cheers Jacob!
I just hope, now that you've figured out where all the plugs go, that you label the wire loom!!
Great idea! I will now :D
@@RestoreIt No need for that: You gonna know that particular model's loom-quirks by heart for good I reckon 😂
I label all the wires from a fiero I was rebuilding and then I pressure wash the engine before starting the work and all the labels was washed off.🙄
I felt your pain when your had to disassemble and reassemble so many times after troubleshooting some electrical issues on my old Suzuki swift sport 😭 good to see you learn from it though! Sometimes a lesson is better taught when you learn for yourself, I reckon.
Exactly that cheers Robert!
Must’ve been so annoying to remove the whole engine again been there
It was, and it wasn't at the same time. Now I know I could do it all on my own if I ever need to. Which i hope I wont ever again :D
Dude - Magnificent job, iam impressed seeing your determination. One thing I must say - Never, ever put filler/putty on bare steel. It wil rust quickly because fillers are higroscopic and you trapped moisture inside. It will react with steel, sou you must cut fillers off to avoid rusting. You should spray epoxy primer directly on steel, then filler/putty and next epoxy primer again. Then use acrylic primer and paint.
Keep going, Iam not a fan of BMW but admire your work.
Thanks for the advice Remont! Good to know now rather than later when I do the full restoration! Cheers.
@@RestoreItIn dry climate, chances of failure are smaller , so maybe you are lucky.
Just remember the rule next time - always keep putty between epoxy primer layers.
just curious, while i understand spraying epoxy primer on bare metal first, why put epoxy primer on top of filler ?
@@xav1uz To close it between layers of epoxy primer. It prevents a various paint defects in next steps.
The most proper technology is:
1 - Rust filler applied on bare steel if there is any corrosion
2 - Epoxy primer
3 - Putty
Then you may sand the putty to recover all shapes and surfaces. Just dry sandpaper - absolutely no water!! just dry sanding.
4 - sealing of sanded putty with another layer of epoxy primer, which is non higroscopic in opposite to acrylic primer
5 - Then Application of Acrylic primer in 2-max 3 layers
6 - Application of dry guide coat ( control powder, control spray etc)
7 - wet sanding, using dry guide layer as visual help, as long as needed to restore proper shape of surface
8 - Rinsing using silicone remover
9 - Basecoat (color)
10 - clearcoat....
I know there is a lot of steps, but if you do it properly there is no way the rust will come out again... unless it is a Mazda... :D
@@RemontidEalnyit's nice to see someone who knows what he's talking about.
This is the moment we've all been waiting for. So satisfying to hear that engine cranking up and starting for the first time in a long time. Full engine/engine bay restored, she's practically brand new 😍😍👌👌🤜👍👏👏
Huge kudos to you for having the guts to try again until you nail it. I've seen so many projects being abandoned due to frustration for years and years. I bet it was the most satisfying feeling ever, to be able to hear that engine after all the work you put into every part, bolt and nut of the car. Have a nice trip!
A genuine man, really feel for him
Thanks Sadnan!
I’ve watched a few of your earlier RestoreIT videos but the E30 restoration content has become addictive... what with having recently purchased one myself.
The content you create is top quality, no BS and informative... IMO your humility, patience and acknowledgement that things do go wrong shows great character and makes your videos watchable.
Keep the great work up and all the best with the 325i restoration. 👍🏽
Excellent restoration
Overcoming all of those problems says a lot about you, you are a winner, well done.
Great job! It takes a lot of persistence, stamina, and patience to do these types of tasks, along with some kind of stress management strategy for those times when those three traits are really put to the test. Great to see you continuing to have success, and thanks for your hard work and focus-it’s a great example for the rest of us.
My heart was in my throat while I watched each time you tried to start the car. I am so happy you were successful in the end. Happy return to the UK. Jim
haha mine were too Jim! Cheers buddy, It wont be long until I'm back there and cranking out the episodes faster than ever :)
Good for you sticking it through. I bet that was satisfying to drive.
The satisfaction to watch it start and drive after so many videos about it ! Congrats and thanks !
The ability to find and fix this kind of problem is amazing and show your top class👍
So great to see it running! Hell of a work you did there! Respect!!
So excited to see more of this wagon! Absolutely love these touring videos
Great video @Restore It. I always love watching E30 videos and yours are my favorite because of the ability to mechanically follow along with what you're doing. Have a safe move and keep it going strong, brother!
Thank you wsshead. I appreciate that! I've got a date for moivng and it's very soon, so I'll be back on the other side :D Thanks man.
Ohhh maaaan it was so so satisfying to hear it start after so long! I had to replay that bit a couple of times, knowing you put so much love and effort onto your E30!
Outstanding work
I am sure when it started for the 1st time, your heart smiled and you got new strength to push on.
Thank you Motheo! It was a great feeling and it did just that indeed!
Congratulations man. You really did it!!!
Well done. Such cool cars.
That first start must have been such a great feeling!!
It’s refreshing to see the trials and tribulations, usually on videos this is hidden but that’s what I enjoy the most. I’d say I’m a competent home mechanic but I always encounter problems, sometimes even on simple jobs like changing a set of discs and pads! Bravo and lovely work my friend!
I’ve wanted to own a VW Golf since I was 16 years old and now I do. I’ve also wanted to own a E30 Touring but in that wonderful dark blue colour. I’d still like to own one at some point. They have such wonderful character. This epic project you embarked on deserves every success!
Thank you MatchstalkMan I appreciate it! I would recommend the E30 touring to any car enthusiast for sure! Thanks again!
Mk1?
Finally you made it 👏👏👏👏👌👌👍👍👍👍
Thanks Hassan!
Superhuman patience!
Esperei muito por esse momento, a série da touring é a melhor. Parabéns!
Well done (understatement of the year). Keep up the good work. Champion level determination. You are an inspiration!
Fantastic job, always enjoying to watch your channel, i like that you don't give up, keep up with good work. Thank You.
Worth every nut and bolt you had to undo and redo later to gain the experience! Very impressive!! Much respect and love from South Africa 🇿🇦
I totally agree johannes! Thank you!
Good job!
Nice work

I realize it is kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Adam Harlan Lately I have been using flixportal. Just search on google for it :)
@Avery Donald thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I appreciate it !
@Adam Harlan Glad I could help :)
In Germany, we use to say "Wahnsinn" when we see something like this or in case, we want to describe your whole project with just one expression. Literally, It could be translated as "madness", but it's meant a bit more in the way of "unbelievable" and that's just what it is. Greetings and lots of respect from another BMW owner.
congratulations, awesome car
Sooo good. Way to go! I don't mean to sound patronizing when I say this but I'm super proud of you. I know that feeling of when it FINALLY starts. Best wishes.
Cheers, you did it.
Finally it is Aliveeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I am so happy for you , I could see your happy face after the trouble shooting and what an ordeal it was. Taking the engine out again, and by yourself, you did a excellent work. Have a nice trip back Bro.
Big thanks Coolissim. It was like christmas day as a kid when it first started :D So good. Great experience and with all the frustrating times.
Love that car!
Really good work! I am happy to see your progress! Awesome, time to crack some cold ones!
Epic patience, tolerance, and endurance for challenging delays. That breakfast cereal must good!
Man that's the end of a long ass series, sort of sad when I think about it. Kudos to you for all the hard work!
Thanks a lot for the shoutout! I have great respect for your courage to dive into such projects! Installing the drivetrain all by yourself - omg!!
Great work, and superb persistence.
Thanks! :)
Great Job man!!
Thank you Pantelis!
Love to see this moving under it's own power again! Hopefully the proper restoration won't bear too many surprises. Congrats on the achievement so far though!
Que bueno que ya lo terminaste, te quedó genial 👌👍👍
Damn dude, congrats. You learned a lot along the way and you taught me a shit ton about the older beamers. I have a little more respect for them now.
Thank you Peter! Glad to hear this.
I love your videos. You’re an inspiration!!!
Thank you mtchilds!
What a pain in the butt, guys! But eventually successful because you never gave up. Great job and I am honestly deeply impressed.
Greets from Germany!
Muscling that GB all by your onesy was impressive 👏
Very commendable to do the troubleshooting, it purrs like a kitten now! I've had to do some troubleshooting myself on my Mk3 Golf, misfiring issues and all that. Turned out coil was bad (got zapped when I wanted to touch it, great way to test ha) and even after replacing that, it went from misfires in wet weather to constantly running on 3. Popped the spark plug wires one by one and found the one that was broken. Such a great feeling.
incredible amount of work put into this car. I truly hope it gives you decades of enjoyable driving life out of it.
Success comes out from our mistakes.
Thumbs up bro.
Hooray! I once couldn't start an Alfasud engine no matter what I tried - turns out I had to turn the distributor rotor shaft 180 degrees! Glad you found the issue.
O my God, engine out again 🤯 You got some patience my friend, kudos
Sounds like the starter motor is binding. The 'spin down' sound after you turn off the engine is tell-tale :)
Thanks for letting me know, i'll look into it :D
Hi mate 🖐 I always like to watch your videos 🙃🎬 they are really immersive 🤩 you are doing a great job 👌 I appreciate it very much 👍
SO happy for you mate. Persistance is indeed a virtue, and you have it...
Thank you as always mate!
MY DREAM CAR
Biggest takeaway from this episode is recognizing that when you take stuff apart, label it. Even if he got a new loom, might have helped avoid the guess work.
Love the episode. I wanna do a project just like this when I get the chance. You're a real inspiration, and probably the best youtuber out there showing the restoration process
You're not wrong about that... and thank you Zak thats very kind of you!
Dude, you're so responsive in the comments, and you always take the suggestions so well. Seriously, I haven't seen such great restoration vids AND as active of a creator as you. I'm just glad I fell in love with the E30 in a time when someone like you showed that it was possible to bring them back to life
What a feeling to get it to finally drive
It was pain just looking at it. Well at the end it worked. Congrat.
GG man !
Yes i Love the Car Hope more and more Videos Love to watch it 👍👍❤️👍👍
So much relief she she started 😍
O man, that's was a quest, but you did it this. You pumped all your skills buddy. Anyway, such a good result. My congrats man.
Thanks Ozzy, it took all of my skillz to get this one done that for sure... Big thanks as always man.
AWESOME, AWESOME!!
Thank you Pedro!!
Got the notification this time bud. Loving the regular uploads. 👍 Also don't get down about removing the engine again, im an experience mechanic and I've done mistakes like this before. Live and learn the hard way sometimes 😊
Glad to hear it Andrew! And thanks man, haha it was all fun really :D
Awesome job!
It must have been a helluva smile when it first started :)
It was like christmas day! haha
Nice job, bro!! I wish i could have a car like this but they are pretty rare in Brazil... love your videos!! Not only technical stuff, but they are very pleasing to watch!! Keep doing it and having fun!! Cheers from São Paulo, Brazil
When I Did by e30 swap I had a similar issue... all I did was buy another engine loom that matches the face lift ecu and ran one wire to the glove box for all the dash and instruments gauges. Then boom started on the first key turn .
Haha.. I wish my fix was that easy!
Love it!
Thanks!
Top video
Yes finally I've been waiting even before the move
Cheers Dallas!
@@RestoreIt now I got to get my project car running 😂
Thank you for including your struggles. Too many CZcamsrs only show the good parts and not the bad. Also there is a lot of bad info on CZcams that you kind of addressed here. For instance I am a proud owner of a late model manual swap but I have an early model ...
Thank you for watching and commenting Trevor :)
Yessir this make me happy
Yes Bob! Early today!
Great Job budd!!!!
Thanks Darren!
@@RestoreIt Keep up the great vlogs its rite up my alley lol !!!
What a nightmare...
Well done!!
It was! haha but got there in the end!
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum erfolgreichen Start des Motors. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass es so schwierig sein kann.👍
Me either! thanks man
Ja, ich auch!!
the most improbable sponsor ever :)
Well done on persevering with the job. You must have had many moments where it didn’t seem worth it. Congratulations for pushing through.
Good work. Helpful tip. Before you install the engine back into the car put wiring harness onto the engine.
Wow, I am so sorry to see all this trouble that you went through. Although that’s an awesome amount of experience you are getting out of it. We had the same problem on our e30 when we removed the wiring in the engine bay. If we learnt something out of it, was that tagging is your best friend on these old cars. Good job though!!!
Bravo
Мои поздравления, Ты сделал этот, он живой, красивый и все это сделал Ты, молодец!
Жду дальнейшего продолжения, буду так же рад видеть Твои видео
I never thought that restoring channel promoting cereal box
Me either! Until I tried magic spoon :D
The cereal commercial mid video got me good lmao
I know your pain with that flywheel. My Volvo 940 had a trigger on the flywheel and I had to take the transmission out TWICE to get it aligned properly. The first time I did it the crank pulley tdc mark was incorrect, and the second time I used a guide for an older car and so it was still wrong. Third time I finally got it
So glad you got her running. My mate's mum used to bring us to school everyday in a 1991, H Reg, White 325i. This brings back great memories, that car could move.
I'm a bit disappointed in the magic spoon cereal though, it looks fantastic but they only ship to the US :(
Where abouts in uk you be coming,,,i know that feeling when you got it started.... took me a week to find out it was a cable under steering that got loose .....
Nice
Big inspiration to get a e30
Do it!
MAGIC SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
Nice job, lots of patience and perseverance. Pity the camera didn't capture the smile it must have brought to your face as it fired up!!
When I finally got my truck started after months of being down I was dancing around
