  • DOWNSVILLE - Downsville Central School welcomed its first 48 student passenger electric school bu, Wednesday, Nov. 8 as part of apilot project supported by a New York state grant. The district applied for grant funding and Leonard Bus Sales and electrification partner, Cornice Technology, provided grant support.
“School buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school,” Downsville’s transportation supervisor Gerry Ormandy said. He has absolutely no concerns about safety with the bus, or battery ignition, a concern expressed locally.
The bus has been driven on various routes that average between 20 and 35 miles, resulting in an approximate 1% draw on the battery per mile. So far, the charge back time has been 10% per hour, Ormandy said. The bus is low profile and handles great with quite a bit of torque. The bus has proven to be great on Colchester’s hilly terrain.
Downsville is the first school in the DOMO BOCES district to use an electric bus.
