  • Don’t book an organized tour. The hike is free, just take an Uber. Type in Pedra do Telégrafo and Uber will take you to the trailhead.
Pedra do Telégrafo (Telegraph’s Rock) is located in the west side of Rio de Janeiro. From Copacabana, the drive to the rock is beautiful, you’ll get a chance to see all the beaches along the coast of Rio. Be sure to stop and take some photos.
Pedra do Telégrafo has a stunning view of the beautiful coast line. You will see wild beaches and the Tijuca Forest in the background. Along with the beautiful ocean and skyline.
The trail takes about 45 minutes to get to the top. The summit is 354 meters above sea level. Once you are up there, you will see the rock everyone takes pictures on is actually an optical illusion. It’s very safe and only about two meters off the round. All you have to do is take a good angled picture and crop out the bottom. Then you have a great cliff hanging photo. Have fun and take lots of pictures.
Here is an important tip...Start very early! This is a favorite spot for tourists and sometimes the line for a photo can be hours long. No joke, start early and don’t forget to include drive time.
Barra de Guaratiba is a beautiful beach at the bottom of the hike. Be sure to stop there for a dip in the ocean before heading home. We spent the whole day there. Our kids had a blast. The hike was fun and easy enough for my 7 year old to do. I highly recommend this as a great family activity. Video 170
