    Saw Return of the King the other night and I think this may have been an editing decision. Frodo’s reaction shot is quite brief, and it looks a little like his mouth is about to move to say his name. Perhaps they realised that the two hadn’t interacted enough throughout the films to justify it.

    To be fair: After the First Movie they were sepperated until the End of Return of the King. And I am 100% sure that Frodo and Legolas had conversations during the Journey, but it just wasnt shown to us. After all, the Relationship between Frodo and Gandalf, Frodo and Sam, Frodo and Aaragorn, Frodo and Boromir, even Frodo and Merryn/Pippin, aber way more important then Frodo and Legolas or Gimli. And all this Relationships needed Screentime. I guess thats why he never talked much to Legolas and Gimli in the Movie. It would have cost too much Screentime

    • @vampuricknight1
      @vampuricknight1 Před 2 lety +15

      That, and in the actual books there is only 2 direct exchanges between Frodo and Legolas that I know of.
      The first is when they enter the forest of Lothlorien and Frodo hears the elves singing, legolas offers to sing it to him and tell him the meaning after, during the singing legolas's voice falters and he says he cannot sing the rest, for he has remembered the song is about the Maiden Nimrodel and how much sorrow came to Lothlorien after the dwarves awakened the evil in the mountains
      The second scene is Sam and Frodo floating down the great river wondering how long they had been in Caras Galadhon, the forest city where Frodo meets Galadriel, as their was no changing of the moon while they stayed there and the days and nights were unusually short. This then leads them to wonder if time does not actually change there like it does in the rest of the world, to which Legolas explains that time does exist their however 'change and growth' are not the same in such places as it is the rest of the world... essentially going on to say that the elves there do not keep to the same scale of time, nor count the seasons or years, but that all things under the sun will eventually wear and die. It is just that this wearing is slower there.
      Essentially their first exchange was awkward AF, as Legolas accidentally reminds Frodo Gandalf was "killed" by the Balrog. (this is actually very slightly in the movie as Legolas essentially tells the party he doesn't have the heart to tell them what the elves sing upon entering that area), and the second exchange he essentially tells Frodo death comes for everyone which is an understandably morbid topic. So yeah, wouldn't surprise me at all if Frodo didn't develop a particularly strong relationship with Legolas.

      that is important - Frodo and Sam separate at the end of the film. But even in the books (and this is something that bothered me decades ago) Legolas is the only one who does not speak directly to Frodo, before the separation or after the return. The thing that bothered me - in the books Legolas is not particularly talkative (though always collegial) between Rivendell and Lorien but he does open up when they get to Lorien. He becomes more talkative, he talks about Lorien, he recites the tale of Nimrodel, - to the group. They spend a month in Lorien. Legolas ditches the Company during the day and he often takes Gimli with him. If he had taken one day to show Frodo around - Sam would have gone with them, Sam might have seen some rope, Sam might have commented on it, Sam might have gotten some ropemaking lessons like he wanted. Now the reunion scene in the books took place outside - Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Sam meet and converse as a group. That conversation is not recorded until the end - Legolas starts talking about the sea. He is talking to the group but he is also kind of talking to himself. One can surmise that Legolas exchanged words directly with Frodo or Sam during the outdoor reunion...one wants to believe

    Legolas says nothing directly, one on one, to Frodo or Sam, in the books. He is the only one who never speaks directly to Frodo before Frodo and Sam strike out on their own. The reunion at the end of ROTK takes place outdoors - Frodo and Sam speak with Merry, Pippin, Legolas and Gimli. Legolas speaks of the sea and its effect on him, but he speaks generally, to the group and to himself. We can surmise that during this reunion a question or comment might have been made by one directly to the other but it is not recorded.
