The Murals of Northern Ireland
Vložit
- čas přidán 17. 01. 2015
- Murals have been painted in Northern Ireland for over 100 years. In this documentary, leading murals historian Bill Rolston explains how they adapt to a changing political climate and the changing attitudes of republican and loyalist communities. William Jackson, grandson of one of the first muralists, discusses the sense of identity that murals instill in communities. Others look at murals as a tool for conflict transformation. Jeanette Warke, manager of a youth centre in Derry~Londonderry, describes how they can have a positive impact on younger generations.

My Man!!!! Willie Jackson from the Londonderry Fountain! My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting, and spending time with Willie and his family this past summer of 2023. Very grateful for all I've learned about this unique and interesting culture within Northern Ireland. I'm proud to be of Scots Irish heritage and the rich legacy this group has in the USA. I love so much about both of the cultures sharing this tiny country and am truly hopeful that they will be able to maintain peace and prosperity, while maintaining their own unique identities. While many Americans are familiar with the Irish Republican struggle for independence, I wish more would dig deep into the alternative perspective and the earnest desire of the Unionist population to maintain their Union with England, Scotland and Wales. It seems as though most CZcams posts portray it as though England forced Northern Ireland to remain in the Union, when in fact it was the people of Northern Ireland that were strongly determined to do so. Many people get into the "they stole their land" argument, which on the surface seems valid, however, Scots were originally from part of what is now Northern Ireland and were driven out. Beyond that, any "stole the land" argument is totally null and void from any American, of European descent, who is not willing to pick up and move back to Europe. I'm grateful to live in a time when we are progressing toward more peaceful means of establishing political boundaries. I'm also grateful for my American accent so that I may visit, and be welcome by all the rad people of Ireland. I love visiting every few years to see which murals have changed and which have remained. I can't wait to go back. Thank you for sharing this video! Cheers/Slainte to a peace, prosperity, rad murals, culture and heritage!

🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 Beautiful artwork
Some great murals and a load of new loyalist murals going up. The new murals that go up now are great pieces of artwork some are massive prints but compared to the ones from the 70s and 80s thay are way better artistically but i like the older ones some of they are very good and were great for the time. Ive collected hundreds of pictures and saved them to my Google photos. Some cracking murals from over the different years 🇬🇧✊🏻🇬🇧✊🏻🇬🇧✊🏻
They are great paintings but I wouldn’t want one on the side of my house !!
Why would any council let murals be painted on walls? We have moved on already not back.
the republican murals is more art compared to loyalists art
@@mcp1228 the loyalists literally have Iron Maiden on their wall, the republicans cannot compete.
If u own ur property they cant really stop you
That's because the paramilitaries for the most part own the walls in there areas. There are good loyalist moralists David Irvine some of them in Londonderry a mural called the untold story is one of my favourite murals in Northern Ireland. They are done by unionists but not Loyalist paramilitaries. You do get militant republican militant Ira murals that pay homage to Ira men who died but they do it in a much less subtle way you won't see ira written on them.Another reason republican murals are so much better is one very talented artist does most of them
Better than gender bender murals an flags flying!!!!
The isis magazine?
Was billy bent over that wall. Everyone knows he is a bum boy
I thought Republicans were inclusive and anti-homophobic?
@@matthewmclintock3514 we are not all hard wired robots who all think the exact same like loyalist, that’s why are murals are nice and origonal
@@mcp1228 clearly you's aren't all educated either.

Ssssshhhhhh the adults are talking now
@@ruairijoseph good let them feed on my manna
@@gavindouglas3196 exactly my point
@@ruairijoseph thank you
@@gavindouglas3196 just read today that only 37% of schoolchildren in NI are Protestant and shrinking vs 51% who are little Fenians and growing. The 2021 census figures will probably show Protestants are in the minority already… the 2031 census will be hilarious. 😂 Bloody republicans are just gonna wait until the gap widens a bit more then boom 💥 it’s border pol time and a 32 county Republic and back into the EU we go. We Already have an economic United Ireland thanks to the DUP… the clock it ticking my little loyalist buddy. TAL
The Northern Ireland is British land.
It’s northern Irish, not western Britain.
@@kevonslims7269 Ireland is in the British isles. Northern Ireland is also within the United Kingdom hence British land
@@Valencetheshireman927 Northern Ireland is on the partitioned and soon to be United island of Ireland, just need to end that occupation.
@@kevonslims7269 Northern Ireland is where it wants to be. So if you want your “United Ireland” you’ll just need to remove the people of Northern Ireland from their homes and ignore their will
@@kevonslims7269 United Ireland?? They can`t even sort out this " Hard Border crap " and it`s been going on for how long? What chance have they got of uniting a Country? Answer, No chance. Politicians are a fuckun joke mate.
The Isis magazine? Good job on the name boys
@Nolwenn Appelbaum The isis is the name for the river Thames as it flows through Oxford. The magazine has been around for a lot longer than the Islamic state and will be around for much longer
