Have changed the oil twice, no chain noise, lurching or hesitation when driving. Needed new tyres and suspension refresh which I've partially done. Has the ZF8, seems fine, but hope not too far gone at this mileage for a fluid change as I don't know if that was done.

    Hey dean, Love the videos!
    N20 - solid block aluminium - less prone to leaks. Just bought mine with 52k - dry as bone.
    N52 - gaskets defo would go - block is mix of aluminium and mag prone to leaks
    Maps - yeah its solid block Alu, but man don't push it. twin scroll turbo is plenty and enough.

  • @wernvt35

    I have a 2012 520i with the N20 engine. Don't have much issues here in South Africa. Although the engine was replaced at 60000km (+- 37200 miles). They had found metal shavings on the oil pick-up so they replaced the engine under warranty. My car has now done 104000km (+-65000 miles) and the only issue is smoke when the car is parked for at least 24hours. BMW did replace all four injectors which helped a bit (because of a "spray pattern" problem), but after a while it returned - obviously after the second engine warranty has expired... : - ).
    I cannot find any information in South Africa, but found a few hits online of other N20 owners in the US complaining about this. Apparently the oil feeder pipe lets oil into the Turbo and that results in smoke on first startup after about 24 hours. Apparently a new pipe was designed were a none return valve was fitted which solves the issue....worse case it could be the Turbo seals.
    Do you have any comments about this from a UK perspective seeing as F10's being imported to South Africa is based on European spec.
    Other than that I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned.

    Thanks for the vid - thinking abt buying out our 2017 X3 xDrive28i M-Sport (facelift), as it's lease expires soon. 90k kms on it. Have had no mechanical/oil issues to date. Are there any reliability concerns for 2017 model year heading beyond warranty into high mileage territory? Havent seen any oil leaks so far, all services done at stealership but i'd be moving onto local indy shops 4 maintenance from here on.. This vid worries me now, but I'm wondering if 2017 N20 engine was a better year and most issues resolved by bmw by that final model year? Or am i still looking at timing chain failures regardless and cracked valve covers etc on a gently driven family suv?

  • @godvana1017
    @godvana1017 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Damn, here in Germany the timing chains were pretty much always good. I own an F30 with the N20 and an E36 convertible with the M43 engine and all of the oldschool mechanics that I work with tell me to not worry about the timing chain in the latter, only when it starts to rattle because they’ve put proper chains in the old engines. Kind of pretty sad that all the newer ones are put together with lower quality materials/plastics to cut costs

    Its the guide chains (not chains, but plastic guides) and the early ones had plastic guides so fail early.
    They did make a change and warranted the early ones to 70k.
    It would be great to know what year for UK models had the plastic guides and when they changed tp more robust guides.
    I honesty believe its a cracking engine - solid block Alu - very strong - tunable (at your own risk) I keep mine stock and don't want to stress it. Turbos are fun but don't need to drive it hard like the N52.
    Anyone got any high milers so we can see leaks? Or what to look for?

      Warranted for just 70k?? Is it a BMW or Ford or Toyota..... its a premium car they should warranted it to 150k minimum. such a shame they are making engines with cheap Chinese materials.

  • @micahnuckols5046
    @micahnuckols5046 Před rokem

    Chains stretch from wear. A bicycle chain that is not properly cleaned and lubed will stretch faster. We would use a chain gauge at the bike shop because if you not change it the cog teeth would wear. If cog teeth wear due to a stretched chain the new chain will not mesh properly and wear problems will happen. In the case of a car that has only one set of cogs that do not change, the issue might appear as premature wear on the new chain and also timing issues. The chains might be wearing prematurely due to oil starvation or somehow the oil might be getting contaminated just like with the chain on a bicycle.

    Thanks doc for the info. May i ask a question regarding the ZF8HP transmission and BMW's general downshifting during deceleration? recently i am feeling an increasingly noticeable and irritating down shifting during coasting & deceleration to a stop. feels like the whole car is jerking everytime it downshifts.. Wasn't like this a few month ago. car is a 14 x5 30d. Do you have any insights on this issue? is my drive-train going out? Thanks again doctor.

    • @DuckMcDuckinson

      It’s to save fuel. Whenever you’re in normal mode the ZF transmission would downshift anytime you’d let off the gas it’d instantaneously would downshift a couple gears. I kinda like it bc I don’t have to really use the brakes when on the road.

    I bought a 2013 f30 with 25000 miles it was certified BMW come with a full warranty up to a hundred thousand miles or 7 years which came last summer has only been serviced at the BMW dealership and I gave it an oil change after the warranty was up and I'm doing the complete suspension now everything I mean complete which Im probably going to save $4,000 by doing it myself that's just on labor from the dealer other than the suspension I've never had a mechanical issues never had a check engine light it's at a hundred thousand miles now yes it does sound like a diesel but that is normal it's not the timing chain it's the fuel injectors it's a good car but I can't recommend in buying a hundred thousand miles BMW f30 because you don't know how people have treated it before you but if you had bought it new it is just fine of an engine and it does have pretty good power and I just added a Dinan tune to it but I will probably remove that so I don't blow my engine and have to buy a new one for $12,000

      Dinan has a stage 1 tune for N20 and brings the bhp up to 311 for The 228i. Not sure if it would be the same for your car. - N20 is a great engine but somewhat delicate and not a great platform for tuning, from what I understand.
