Officially just crossed 200,000km yesterday on my n20 (125,000mi). I had it tuned running 4pi above stock, intake, exhaust, and never had any problems :) it’s the most reliable car I’ve ever driven, and I’ll be honest, I’m a little shocked I’ve been so lucky
Wow. It is perfect. I have 1.6 N20 engine and had 60.000 km on it. I hope it goes until 200.000 km
@@attorney8452 1.6 is not N20..is N13.
@@costelariton9864 No. The 1.6 engine on f10's are N20. You are mixing it with series 3.
@@attorney8452 if you are from Australia or Turkey thats corect!
@@costelariton9864 I checked my car's information from Bmw and it says N20 engine. It has 1.6 170 bg engine produced for Turkey market because of tax issue.
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for - I like your straight-to-the-point style.
I haven’t even watch THIS video yet but you’re one of the greatest bimmer techs I’ve ever watched !!!
My 2014 F30 is my first BMW and I love the little car. No major issues. Valve cover yes, did fuel pump and follower at the same time. Other then normal maintenance, no problems. Has been a fun and reliable car. Tuned and FBO. Keeping boost under 22psi has worked so far.
How did you tune it
Great video, very informative. Thank you for uploading it.
Another great vid. I would like to see vid like this for the n55 if its possible, tnx for the greatest bmw content on youtube
your welcome bro i have this one coming up stay tuned
Thanks for the video dude, currently wrapping up a timing chain replacement. First one I've done on this engine, but I'm seeing a lot more of them roll into the shop. Want to let the customer know about some problems that these engines can have. cheers!
2014 320i xdrive with 90 000KM , engine is purrs like day 1 transmission is like butter , best car ive owned, people need to understand that for every N20 chain issue youtube video there are thousands of N20 on the road without issue any issues.
so glad to hear this. It's most likely due to poor maintenance and driving it hard.
I just got a 2014 428i cope runs like a champ she’s got 67k on the dash
You guys barely have any miles on your cars, ofcourse you engines are still good.....wait till it gets over 120k miles, you cars aren’t even run in yet.
dude slow down and catch your breath. We are here for as long as your video is running. Take your time.
Lmfaooooooo
You can go into your setting and slow the frame rate down.
They say I talk a lil’ fast, but if you listen a lil’ faster, I ain’t gotta slow down for you to catch up -50 cent
I have a 2012 528i x drive 168k miles had timing chain and guides done at 140k just to prevent issue. Great motor still gets 34 mpg on highway no oil use to speak of, oil sender unit started leaking replaced a couple weeks ago... Never had any other issues motor runs extremely strong still no signs of retirement
Thanks for the intel; I have a 2013 328I for 6 years and at 84k miles now and aside from oil, sparkplug and brake service she has been very reliable. I love this car and is so much fun to drive. I will certainly be aware for issues you had mentioned that may pop up. Otherwise it drives great and so far so good.
Do you still have this car ?
Owned a ‘14 428ix and only encountered problems at 130k miles. I put over 60k miles in my 13 months of ownership and it was a great experience. Issue was the wastegate actuator.
Excellent video mate 👍good information have a great week
thanks mate
Bought a 228i, knowing a few but not all of the problems. Takes a lot to scare me off. Took a B7 S4 to 125k miles with no issues. That timing chain problem was far more scary and expensive. My philosophy, treat the car nice, and it'll treat you nice back.
Have a 2013 F30 with a N20 and 110k miles. No problems at all except for wear items like brakes and clutch. I do have a manual gearbox which is extremely rare here in the US so maybe I got one that was made for Europe with better parts.
Great video, Dean!
thanks lance
I drive a 2015 328i xdrive N20 with 110k miles and mods with zero issues. Most reliable car I've ever owned.
Nice to hear. I own 2, 328 and 528 (Me and the wife)
I had a 2012 f30 bmw 328i n20 with 107k miles and the only problem i had with the car was i totaled it.
No i own a 2016 f22 228i xdrive n20 76k miles no issue whatsoever
Dionesy Munoz absolutely 0 problems? that's great to hear i got the same car that you sadly totaled.
@@Luis-bv2pi not one and i had the f30 for little over a year. i can't remember a thing that went wrong in that car or in my current 228i n20
what mods do you have ?
...I actually bought a '14 320i at an auction will very little history that had 186xxx KMs on it, have put 10k on it since then with no issues on the motor so far (knock on wood). Have changed the oil twice, no chain noise, lurching or hesitation when driving. Needed new tyres and suspension refresh which I've partially done. Has the ZF8, seems fine, but hope not too far gone at this mileage for a fluid change as I don't know if that was done.
Cheers Doc!
No lie your videos help a lot.
Very useful video recently got 125i F20 but got bmw warranty but will keep and eye on everything
What mileage is your 125i on, I have a F21 125i on about 54k miles. Just interested to see if you have had any issues with yours?
i have f10 520i n20 engine, 240.000km at this moment, timing chains was changed at 170,000 car drives good
i was waiting on this one!
your welcome
Same here. Thanks Doc!
Hey dean, Love the videos!
N20 - solid block aluminium - less prone to leaks. Just bought mine with 52k - dry as bone.
N52 - gaskets defo would go - block is mix of aluminium and mag prone to leaks
Maps - yeah its solid block Alu, but man don't push it. twin scroll turbo is plenty and enough.
My n52 had almost every single gasket go except for head gasket
Have you had an n20 pop?
I have a 2012 520i with the N20 engine. Don't have much issues here in South Africa. Although the engine was replaced at 60000km (+- 37200 miles). They had found metal shavings on the oil pick-up so they replaced the engine under warranty. My car has now done 104000km (+-65000 miles) and the only issue is smoke when the car is parked for at least 24hours. BMW did replace all four injectors which helped a bit (because of a "spray pattern" problem), but after a while it returned - obviously after the second engine warranty has expired... : - ).
I cannot find any information in South Africa, but found a few hits online of other N20 owners in the US complaining about this. Apparently the oil feeder pipe lets oil into the Turbo and that results in smoke on first startup after about 24 hours. Apparently a new pipe was designed were a none return valve was fitted which solves the issue....worse case it could be the Turbo seals.
Do you have any comments about this from a UK perspective seeing as F10's being imported to South Africa is based on European spec.
Other than that I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned.
Great info👌🏼
Got a 2015 f32 428i xdrive with 47224 miles never had a single problem with n20 hope it last forever 😌
I have my F10 N20 engine since 2013. It is over 110k miles. I change engine oil around 6-7 miles. No problem at all. Only change generator and heat exchanger.
6-7000?
I have a 2012 328i with 175k miles i think it has original timing chain and guides. I just put bm3 stage 1 and downpipe. Wow what a difference! Runs like new . So fast now
i know this is a little late but can you give me an update on how it went ??? i have an ‘13 N20 129,000 Miles and i wanna tune it... Any issues so far ??
@@marlonpuentes9483 did you tune it?
Both chains, timing and oil pump chain are in the FRONT of the engine on the N20. On the BX8 engines the chains are in the back and to replace them the whole engine has to bei pulled.
Think its the other way around? You also just have to drop the gear box not pull the engine out?
true
Thank you for the informative video. Appreciate if you can do a video on B48 and B58 engine
Very good video! Can you make the same with the B48 engine in the 20i, 28i, cooper s, and so on...
Hello, I have a 2014 320i with 115600 miles so far no problems 🤞🏼with n20 engine
If you know how to properly maintain your car it's no problem.
@@conspiracykill True, people usually tend to badly maintain a car and then complain... annoying
SlayTheSins those are usually ppl used to honda that were beat to hell and still ran ...kinda ... people that basically buy a bmw without wanting to pay the bmw maintence
Fully stock or remaped? Lad on a fb page just had his 320i engine die at 52K miles ECU map to 280bhp
Thanks for the vid - thinking abt buying out our 2017 X3 xDrive28i M-Sport (facelift), as it's lease expires soon. 90k kms on it. Have had no mechanical/oil issues to date. Are there any reliability concerns for 2017 model year heading beyond warranty into high mileage territory? Havent seen any oil leaks so far, all services done at stealership but i'd be moving onto local indy shops 4 maintenance from here on.. This vid worries me now, but I'm wondering if 2017 N20 engine was a better year and most issues resolved by bmw by that final model year? Or am i still looking at timing chain failures regardless and cracked valve covers etc on a gently driven family suv?
Damn, here in Germany the timing chains were pretty much always good. I own an F30 with the N20 and an E36 convertible with the M43 engine and all of the oldschool mechanics that I work with tell me to not worry about the timing chain in the latter, only when it starts to rattle because they’ve put proper chains in the old engines. Kind of pretty sad that all the newer ones are put together with lower quality materials/plastics to cut costs
Hey Dean , would be a good idea to do iDrive ( ccc) video , lots of people are complaining about faults and problems , joystick not working etc. And also I saw lots of videos of retrofit a ccc is it worth it, what are our options when iDrive starts to fail , where to seek help and not going to the stealership , cheers mate
Hi, I'm considering purchasing a 320 m sport in the UK, would I be better off looking at a higher mileage car post-2015 or a lower mileage car pre-2015? Thanks
13' 328i N20 93k miles. Definitely had the slight leak on the oil filter housing at around 85k. Destroyed my belt.
Had the same problem, just change oil filter housing. I changed it and changed my belt so there is no oil on my belt anymore. It runs smooth
Timing chains are not new to me in the US. Replaced them on my V8 due to stretch but never had to worry about it jumping teeth. My QUAD4 went to 237,000 miles before the guide got noisy. Also with boosted cars, I am used to pistons or head gaskets failing before the head. I do have a 2015 N20.
2012 N20 328i w 119k miles here. Bought the car at 95,800 and turbos were replaced at 95,300 by BMW. Timing chain has started warping so got that taken care of, and valve cover cracked but we also got that taken care of.
How much did it all cost you? Also how easy is it to work on the Four Cylinder BMWs?
They are much easier to work on than 6 cyilinder due to more space around the engine.. 😊
2012 528i 2nd owner 112k miles running strong
How has maintaining it been?
2013 328i xdrive AT its stock and I changed my oil every 5k miles using bmw brand oil/filter, changed my turbo at 85k ($2000) then my valve cover gasket/coil packs/spark plugs and oil cooler at 105k ($1700) also replaced brakes/rotors and to koni struts at about 95k ($1300) and a new battery/belt ($250) the original lasted for 6 years. I bought the car with about 72k miles had it for 3 years as a daily I'm still undecided about keeping it and installing some bolt ons or just buying an evo around the same year and having fun with that
@@kcsellingpage653 they failed besides brakes sparks and coils were done just because we were in there already might as well put a fresh set in but they runs about 650 for all of thag
I own a f30 320i for 2,5 years now it has over 150.000km on the clock and I bought it with 89.000km. And so far I have no issues with the engine and it has a remapped ecu. But to be fairly honest I drive it like a grandpa with the occasional high speed tunnel runs. For some reason it doesn't feel strong enough to drive it with a heavy foot. My previous JDM cars and my oldskool BMW's from the past felt more reliable and stronger.
I have a 2016 BMW 428i convertible..it has 12,892 miles on it..I haven't had any problems do far, I really hope none of these problems happen to mine :(
Thank you
N20 or the b47 engine on a f30 which you think is the better buy?
I have a 2013 N20 with 160k miles and no issues ( yet ).
any issues or not yet still
Does the B48 have these issues as well? Or likely to have? Thanks
have a 2014 328i 70k miles no issues. only failure was a thermostat
13 N26 at 94,500 miles
Mods:
Charge pipe
Catless down pipe
Injen intake
Muffler delete
Jb4
Performance coil packs
Vrsf intercooler (coming soon )
Car runs great
Good video bro.
Thanks mate
I have a '16 N26. Bm3 stg 1, Injen CAI, MPE, Res Delete, stock cats. I love it very fun. It's at 60.6K miles and my oil filter housing gasket failed around 55K. Interestingly, my OFHG didn't start with a small leak just went right to failure.
I had other small none mechanical issues. But overall I'm glad I bought this car.
Bought it in 11/2020 with 32K miles.
I've always understood the N20/N26 to be whiny engines at WOT. They're just noisy.
im thinking about buying either a e90 325i (218)2009-2011 lci or f30 320i (184) 2012. Can you give me your opinion and thoughts on which is better?thanks in advance
Also got pipe going to intercooler leaking oil is that turbo going or just seal?
I have a 2015 F21 125i with the N20B20 engine. I'm interested to know whether mine will have the updated timing chain in, mine has a build date of May 2015, I cant seem to find a decisive answer on when exactly in 2015 bmw changed them. I'm hoping mine is the updated kit, its on 54k miles atm and although I've only hard it for about 6 months , I will be doing regular oil changes at 6k miles as the 18k service longlife intervals scare the hell out of me!
is this also a problem on the B48 ? as far as i can read its a ok motor ?
2013 x3 n20 x28i 130000 miles runs and drives like new. USA model
Thanks for the infos! And guys just buy them low km, do not put any tunes or anything that will over push the limit of the engine and most importantly do your oil changes frequently ( every 8000-9000 km) not 12-15k km... I can also had to make sure the previous owner is a old man and not a kid that was always pushing it to the red line. This is just common sense 🤷
Thanks
thanks for watching mate
Any ideas i have a problem with my n20 very fine dust like metal in oil the chain was loose so i ordered a new one however we cannot find where the metal came from the chain does not look worn , the top end is clean no contamination any thoughts im worried that i will still have problems after i fix the chain?
I’ve literally had all these things replaced and serviced. When we did my timing chain the engine was apart so all gaskets were replaced.
It's highly tuneable. The only difference between 184/218/245 hp variants is simply the tune. It's good for 280 hp with no other mods than tune.
not true. piston heads and a few other parts differentiate the motors. compression ratios are different. do your research.
Wow never new they had those types of problems. always thought they were bullet proof, 👍
A bulletproof BMW? LMAO!!!!!
Its the guide chains (not chains, but plastic guides) and the early ones had plastic guides so fail early.
They did make a change and warranted the early ones to 70k.
It would be great to know what year for UK models had the plastic guides and when they changed tp more robust guides.
I honesty believe its a cracking engine - solid block Alu - very strong - tunable (at your own risk) I keep mine stock and don't want to stress it. Turbos are fun but don't need to drive it hard like the N52.
Anyone got any high milers so we can see leaks? Or what to look for?
Warranted for just 70k?? Is it a BMW or Ford or Toyota..... its a premium car they should warranted it to 150k minimum. such a shame they are making engines with cheap Chinese materials.
I'm at 115k, had a valve cover gasket leak fixed at 105k , now I've seen a tiny seep of oil from the filter housing. Runs great, just wish they would have done better with a few things
@@plumbmaster7022still going strong ? With the timing chain guide ? I just got one
Recently got a 328i N20, and in the city I drive like a Grandma, on the highway I have a light foot, so I'm really hoping it lasts me at least 5-7 years.
You forgot to mențin the high pitch on The oil pump chain, when în about to go bad îs creating a high noise does not matter the rpm
I have a 2016 X3 (N20) Sdrive28i 90k miles. Today just had the CHECK ENGINE light ON "drivetrain malfunction". Turbo failing and Whining sound while 2-3k RPM.
I do have warranty and I just dropped off at BMW Dealership of San Diego. Let's see what BMW will do!
200,000 KM on my 528i N20 still runs like a bullet with no timing chain replacements.
My 2012 328i has 120k miles, I’m low key worried about the timing chain 😂
my 2015 428i GC with a N20 motor is at 77K miles and no problem whosoever so far.
So I guess n20 is okay as long as you budget for timing chain replacement. What's the safe amount of power you can get from this engine with a reflash and boltons?
A fair amount maybe 280-300ish hp, but the 335i and 340i is more up your alley performance wise the n20 I wouldn't go crazy on performance mods cosmetics on the other hand sure.
You can safely do low 300s to the wheels with stage 2 tunes and bolt ons.
Whats your take on the b46-b48 ?
Chains stretch from wear. A bicycle chain that is not properly cleaned and lubed will stretch faster. We would use a chain gauge at the bike shop because if you not change it the cog teeth would wear. If cog teeth wear due to a stretched chain the new chain will not mesh properly and wear problems will happen. In the case of a car that has only one set of cogs that do not change, the issue might appear as premature wear on the new chain and also timing issues. The chains might be wearing prematurely due to oil starvation or somehow the oil might be getting contaminated just like with the chain on a bicycle.
Is a 2016 328i bmw n20 with 60k miles reliable? Thinking of picking one up soon
Thanks for this video Dean. I’m looking to purchase a 2016 z4 with the N20. 9600 miles on the engine. It’ll be driven modestly. You mentioned the chain goes out at “low mileage” sometimes. At what mileage should I be concerned about the chain? Thx!!
Litecoin Donny at that point I would say previous owner fixed it not for sure but most seem to go out before that
Don’t worry bro your n20 has upgraded timing comnponents.
Hi very good video nice and detailed. I just changed my n20 timing chain (2014 model) will it eventually start to stretch and fail again. It was replaced by BMW I’m wondering if they replaced it and added a stronger chain
What were the signs of the timing chain going bad? Was it making a noise?
The new chains have a different part number.
Not sure if people know this but there is a sulev warranty for the n26 which is good for 150k miles (and 10 or 15 years not sure)and my timing chain went out at 127k and trust me I did a lot of spirited driving pushing the limit everytime, bmw covered everything which totaled to be close to 7k. Gonna get the car to 300whp and leave it at that. If you guys have any tips please let me know
Thanks doc for the info. May i ask a question regarding the ZF8HP transmission and BMW's general downshifting during deceleration? recently i am feeling an increasingly noticeable and irritating down shifting during coasting & deceleration to a stop. feels like the whole car is jerking everytime it downshifts.. Wasn't like this a few month ago. car is a 14 x5 30d. Do you have any insights on this issue? is my drive-train going out? Thanks again doctor.
It’s to save fuel. Whenever you’re in normal mode the ZF transmission would downshift anytime you’d let off the gas it’d instantaneously would downshift a couple gears. I kinda like it bc I don’t have to really use the brakes when on the road.
Why do you have to ask permission to ask a question on YT? Just ask it, like you did.
What causes my bmw transmission 2013 328i to shift hard from reverse to drive after car has warmed up.
Someone please please answer my question got 125i N20 engine why exhaust is loud when revving it in neutral once gear engaged clutch pressed it goes quiet ? Why???? Why it does not stay that loud
can you pls make a video of the B48
90,3345 no issues dinan stage 1 tuned as well
Need help. I have a 2013 x3 28ixdrive. I had a cylinder 1 miss fire, I replace spark plugs, coil, and fuel injector for cylinder 1. It's still miss firing In cylinder 1 please help 😢 😫
What about if you have 2016 528i is that engine safe
I have almost 129k on my N26 2013, I can’t tell if it has new guides or not. Wouldn’t the guides start white then turn back to brown again? Anyways, I don’t have any symptoms on mine. Idk if it was replaced by the previous owner. Had this car since 113k.
I am looking at getting a 2016 328. So I not have to worry much about the timing chain
Was b48 engine fix the n20 issue?
Timing chain issue fixed from late 2015. Best to buy from 2016 on.
To be fair N20 is reliable but if you want to have zero problems or issues, just go with the lci version of the f30.
I have a bmw x3 with the n20 motor and its problematic. And the timing chain and guides are prone to failure on these engines . Repair costs are heavy .
2014 328i Xdrive 83k km stage 1 i best the shit out of this car every single time I use it. Original timing chain guide not a single issue. It’s billet proof
I bought a 2013 f30 with 25000 miles it was certified BMW come with a full warranty up to a hundred thousand miles or 7 years which came last summer has only been serviced at the BMW dealership and I gave it an oil change after the warranty was up and I'm doing the complete suspension now everything I mean complete which Im probably going to save $4,000 by doing it myself that's just on labor from the dealer other than the suspension I've never had a mechanical issues never had a check engine light it's at a hundred thousand miles now yes it does sound like a diesel but that is normal it's not the timing chain it's the fuel injectors it's a good car but I can't recommend in buying a hundred thousand miles BMW f30 because you don't know how people have treated it before you but if you had bought it new it is just fine of an engine and it does have pretty good power and I just added a Dinan tune to it but I will probably remove that so I don't blow my engine and have to buy a new one for $12,000
Is 300 hp to much boost for an N20. I’m running an 2002 E46 325ci now but looking to buy a 2015 428i M sport. Any recommendations ??
Dinan has a stage 1 tune for N20 and brings the bhp up to 311 for The 228i. Not sure if it would be the same for your car. - N20 is a great engine but somewhat delicate and not a great platform for tuning, from what I understand.
The timing chain went out whilst driving on the highway with my BMW x1 2012. The engine cranks now but it won't fire up. Would replacing the timing chain assembly fix the issue?
typical thats normal on that engine
@@BMWDoctor So just a timing chain assembly replacement would do the fix?
I have a bmw 420i with 280hp and its running god👍 it just has a stage 2 tune noting else
Great video. I was sitting in traffic the other day, and a bit of smoke came out from my exhaust, which was noticiable. Eventually it went, do you know what can cause this
I'm looking at a 2013 328i with 91k. Don't know whether it's covered by the extended warranty on the chain and components. Do you think I need to worry? 2 owners.. seems well taken care of.
Hey i just got a 2013 328i with 80k miles. Have you ran into any issues?
Every car I've ever own have a bad valve cover gasket. They ware out, no big deal.
With these many issues, I reckon this could have been a much shorter video if you would have just talked about things that don’t break!
Or just say, in about 10 seconds, "These engines are junk, DO NOT BUY ONE!".
Had one for 5 years it was nice just leaks really.
I have an n20 engine, my cars production date is 06/2015, was it fixed by then? I hear a chain rattle noise on cold starts, but my BMW shop foreman told me it's normal direct injection noise and not my chain
You are safe
