This is definitely a great value bike. I have the 2011 version of the Kent Avalon Dual Suspension Hybrid Bike with some tune ups and upgrades over the years. It came in a grey/silver paint scheme back in 2011. This bicycle has served me well over the years and rides very smoothly. I have put in several hundred miles on this bicycle throughout the pandemic

I’m impressed! It’s hard to believe they could sell that. Ike for $139 and make money.I might buy a couple to keep at the beach house in case guests want to take a ride around the boardwalk.
Beach house means it's close to the sea. Which means that there will be plenty of corrosive air around to eat away at that steel bike. I bet with you that within a year most of the parts are badly rusted making those boardwalk rides not much fun. I'd adwise against it.
That's not a bad bike for the price and looks pretty good as well. I don't know if you were planning on a project Avalon, but I think this bike would be great to tinker with but not your usual project bikes. How about getting one of those kits that turn the bike into an e-bike? It could be a Project e-Avalon. Put some cheap fenders on it also and it'll be a great commuter! 😃

Kev, all the bikes you go through and you don't have a truing stand??? It is very easy to true a wheel with the proper equipment....you need to get one!!! BTW, I love your videos.
Appreciate your commentary on the wheel truing. Even if this is the only new bike a person can afford, they still deserve wheels that can safely and consistently engage with the brakes.
Usually, if the wheel is off by that much - it's the tards a Walmart running the boxes into stuff (forklift). (yea they are crappy bikes) but when a good assembly company needs to build 300 bikes and the bikes a stack sideways (even without them running into stuff - just stack wrong!) - it goes from possible 1 day job to a long 2-day job.
@@gatorage850 with the big box bikes usually the front wheel is zip tied to the frame and especially when you ship it fedex that front wheel takes a thrashing from the lazy chunkers that let it roll down the conveyor belt instead of handling it properly
@@EBikeBuilder_ Well the bike we build are usually (not) FedEx to the store ( i guess if you special order). Normal Walmart bikes are shipped to the store on pallet, wrapped and delivered by Walmart truck. If you get a fresh off-the-truck pallet of bikes, it's rare the bikes have ship damage. I know how the bikes look in the box - I have taken 100+ out the box many days. Even on a good undamaged bike, the longest time is on the brakes (many times from an untrue wheel or brake disc). The rims are usually not that wobbly fresh off-the-truck (like the one in the video). like he crakes me up every time he say the derailleur does not work right out of the box. It's like a 1 and 50 shot the derailleur does not need adjustment. It's like he does not know the derailleur is usually easier to just than the brakes.

If you want budget and longevity go with a single speed bike. That way the budget is spent on the frame and wheels and not on unnecessary parts like the dual suspension. Also you don't have do do anything ever on a singlespeed drive train. Just ride it.
It would be interesting to see the wheel spinning after the bike store trued it. Do they give you a print-out of the spoke tension charts? I've found with the budget rims they're sometimes difficult to get true, especially around the imperfection of the weld there is often a radial deviation you can't do much about
@@KevCentral park tool has a spoke tension app that is often used to collect data with the tensiometer, and then it visualizes the spoke tension. Kev do know anything about the huffy Parkside matte black ... Trying to figure out if this bike would be better than the Parkside one is a 27 and one is a 26
Effectively the same drivetrain. Differences to factor: The parkside’s 27.5 wheels will be the determining factor for most. The parkside will have a more cruiser-type ride where the Avalon ride will feel more like a commuter. It’s also worth note the Parkside weighs more and doesn’t have an adjustable stem

That way the budget is spent on the frame and wheels and not on unnecessary parts like the dual suspension.
Also you don't have do do anything ever on a singlespeed drive train.
Just ride it.
i wonder if i could mount a motor on it can some one get me the size measurements on the middle triangle of the frame
"2.6 which I guess is better than 2.5" 😂😂
😁
I've talked to two mechanics recently and they both agree that Kent is the most spectacularly unreliable brand they've ever had to work with.
At least they are honest about it
Heh
Imagine I had this as my first real bike instead of two separate roadmaster granite peaks 💀
Nice, good review.
goin' to be a project bike?
Ha!
Looks like a good deal
I think it's a pretty cool 😎 bike
Can you give me the width of the forks, where the wheels attach? I might be buying this but will need to install quick release systems.
The Avalon has 100mm front spacing
Good video, ok bike
It would be interesting to see the wheel spinning after the bike store trued it. Do they give you a print-out of the spoke tension charts? I've found with the budget rims they're sometimes difficult to get true, especially around the imperfection of the weld there is often a radial deviation you can't do much about
Lol. We don’t do tension charts in Alabama. They did a good job with the true job
@@KevCentral park tool has a spoke tension app that is often used to collect data with the tensiometer, and then it visualizes the spoke tension. It's interesting to see a before / after of how the tension was from the factory, and how accurate they were able to true the wheel to. I was just curious as I true my own wheels and I've never paid an actual professional to do it
Do you have any thoughts on the Schwinn Kempo Hybrid currently listed for $348 at Walmart?
Kev have you ever reviewed a polygon bike? On paper spec they look like they might be best $400-500 mountain bikes
I have
Can’t go wrong with that price.
Yes!!!, great video.😀By any chance do you know any cheap but great mountain bikes for under 200$ a couple dollars over 200$ is fine though. Thanks keep the great content up!!!
Thanks. Under $200 is only going to get something like a Decathlon. Basically a path-trail type bike
@@KevCentral Okay thank you very much, do you thank buying a used bike off market place or craigslist is the better option.
Hey Kevin I like the bike
Revisiting this. Question. I just ordered this. $188.41 still good deal. Im 5" 10 should be good. Your expertise opinion is needed. Generally, I got this for getting in shape. You can always add upgrades. Love tinkering. Back to my uestion, I've had this bafang bbso something 750w full kit. Got it 2 yrs ago..id I get a cranks removal kit, it should slide right in. Yes? Prob gonna have to lose that cool chainguard. Thanks...its my winter project. I recentlu got a 2000w scooter. No...no....just no. Im early 50s man. Im used to my huffys from the 80s and Royce union etc... I'm a bike guy. Thank you. I thought I was subbed..must have been old channel. I've had the best times on dept store bikes...have to use threadlock and adjust maintain.. .rim brakes rule. You know I'm an 80s kid! 😄
Ps they say roughly crank area should be approximately.. Between 68mm-120mm. People say it's not to the hair. Ty. I'm excited to get this kit project going
Hello. I don’t have any experience installing bbsd kits, but from what I understand they work on 68 and 73mm bottom brackets, so you should be good
Thank you so much! Coming on the 12th! Safe riding!
I just bought this bicycle for $39.00 .. is that a good deal?
Also … can you do a FOLLOW UP video on how it’s performing months later? Thanks!
Congrats. Imo, that’s a stellar deal. No followup as this was donated to the local trail non-profit
Rear bearings are probly too tight.....in kent quality.....front is locked solid...
Looks like a good candidate for a bafang midmotor. How hard does it look to get that crank out? Thanks.
Standard crank puller will do the job
Thanks Kev!
i just bought some tires that cost more than that lmao. for the money it seems like a good deal
I'm having a hard time believing it's an aluminum bike.. those weld really look like steel welds. I am often wrong, but I'd love to see a magnet test
It is aluminum
@@KevCentral I'm shocked but your videos seem to be making big box stored up their game!
Kev do know anything about the huffy Parkside matte black ... Trying to figure out if this bike would be better than the Parkside one is a 27 and one is a 26
Effectively the same drivetrain. Differences to factor:
The parkside’s 27.5 wheels will be the determining factor for most. The parkside will have a more cruiser-type ride where the Avalon ride will feel more like a commuter. It’s also worth note the Parkside weighs more and doesn’t have an adjustable stem
@@KevCentral I'm 5ft 10 on a good day just looking for something to ride to store and gym that will not kill me If stolen do you think the difference between the 26 and 27 will be a challenge I like to buy from wallie 🌎 because I get that life time discount lol
26-27.5 shouldn’t be an issue. Plus, the parkside is built to put the seat lower to compensate
@@KevCentral thanks Avalon it is these used to be the old next brand bike
I wonder if bikes with rim brakes could be converted to disc brakes?
Some frames have disc mount points. It’s less common for the fork on a bike with rim brakes to have disc mounts
@@KevCentral Sounds like an opportunity for someone to invent a conversion kit.
There are adapters that clamp onto the frame that allow calipers to be mounted, but I don’t trust those. Brakes aren’t a component I want to introduce a potential failure point into.
Would be cool to convert it into a 700c gravel bike.
Interesting
Not worth it
wow!!!!!!
Do you still have and use that Avalon?
This bike is screaming… cheap commuter bike to run the gauntlet of possibly being stolen at the train station everyday. 👍🏼
Lol
Hi, I’m looking to buy a bike for weekend rides and to take it when I go camping. I’m not looking for nothing expensive, I’m a 48 years old guy, that will not be doing anything crazy. Which bike do you recommend?
I don’t make recommendations, but I can tell you what I would buy. Are the weekend rides on or off-road? What’s the budget?
@@KevCentral thanks for the response, I was looking under$200 . I’m not planning on jumping or crazy things, mostly will be on street and off road only when camping
Look at some of the Decathlon bikes Walmart sells. As cheap as $168
@@KevCentral better than the Kent Avalon ?
Overall quality. I would say yes, but they’re more mountain bike styles instead of the Avalons cruiser heritage
From my experience, dual suspension bikes attract thieves a lot. I've seen cheapish bike stolen from the same rack with my nice cannondale. It just looks expensive to an untrained eye. Especially these bright colored `mountain bike` models.
Luckily, we don’t have to worry much with bike theft in my city
I thinking that or rockrider st50 any thoughts? I
Depends on what I wanted to do with them
@@KevCentral Well I was thinking of using on what I call a urban mountain bike route I take that consists of mostly pavement and some pretty steep grassy down hills.
The rock rider would probably work better for that since it has a slightly more mountain bike rider position. The Avalon is an upright comfort ride
@@KevCentral Also thinking on the Mongoose Major . But being your size not sure if it’s to small , and a quill stem .
139 in 2022 is 115 in 2016 dollars to keep in mind
I got my bike today after FedEx lost it having trouble with the v brakes can ya help
What problem with the brakes?
@@KevCentral the front v brake when I attached it goes against the rim It like it's to tight
I had to adjust the front brake cable on mine. It was also tight out of the box - common for bikes with rim brakes. They will either be too tight or too loose out of the box.
@@KevCentral do you just loosen the cable
@@KevCentral I fixxed it ... 40 years since I assemble the bike I think the front tire is pretty wack though it was halfway hanging out of the box when I opened it I don't know if it's this out of true or if it's bent doesn't look bent it just looks a little wobbly
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to take it down a mountain now and show us how it did. The real Walmart bike CZcams meta. 😏
Its a soft tail
Honestly impressive given it’s about the same price as my stem…..
I just wish it was disc brakes other than that everything is fine.
Totally unnecessary though
@@JulitoPapitoo Hahahaha!😂😂😂😂
For a trash bike it’s really, really cool.
Lol
Wow only $15 to true a wheel
Yep
I think this bike is only fun when it's new. Wait a year and ride it again!
