  • In this video I talk about the 61mp Sigma fp L that Sigma Nordic was kind enough to lend me together with the 20mm f2 and 65mm f2. I didn’t have it long enough to make a full review, but I can at least list some of my likes and dislikes.

    Great video, Mattias! Happy to see discussion of the Sigma FP L that recognises there's more to photography than technical specs. It took me a long time to commit to buying the FP L because of how negative the online reviews were (though, funnily enough, the things they trash the Sigma for lacking seemingly don't matter at all when they pronounce the Leica M11 or Hasselblad X907 their grail cameras...) Ultimately, I kept coming back to the camera because it simply excited me more than any of the standard Sony and Canon etc. offerings, not to mention that Sigma as a company is rated as by far the most ethical camera brand by Ethical Consumer, which is a major consideration for me. I bought it with the the Leica M adapter and a Voigtländer 50mm f/1.2 Nokton and haven't regretted the decision for a second! I would thoroughly encourage anyone on the fence to give the camera a try for yourself before believing the influencer hype that it's a nonstarter.

      I enjoyed it very much. And the relatively low price makes it very tempting. Might get one in a year or two when I can score a used one. If nothing else just to get to use the 65mm again.

      Yes, as someone also from Europe, I agree that Sony's pricing structure here makes the Sigma a much cheaper option if you want the benefit of 61MP. I got mine on MPB for around £1500 "like new"!

      I am interested in the FP-L, and I love that Sigma are creating cameras that offer something a bit different and it looks really nicely made (which is important). I hear you re. negative reviews etc, that goes for more than just camera reviews and it's hard to find anything to trust. I'm more interested in hearing from people who use a camera for a long time, not get sent one/buy one for a 2 week review then move on to the next thing - I'm still using an X-Pro1 and x100F so always plan on keeping my stuff for years (I'm not made of money!). However I shoot exclusively through a viewfinder and am worried about that being an issue with the camera being a bit uncomfortable. Do you use the VF? And if so how do you find it? Do you need a handgrip?

    • @liveacousticsound
      @liveacousticsound Před rokem

      @@pcprincipal9889 I am a bit late to this thread, but yes, I recommend getting a grip for the camera. I use the EVF, which stays affixed to the camera unless I need to connect an external ssd. In that case, I connect the LVF-11. Both are amazing quality and a necessary accessory.

  • @NWPipeSmoker
    @NWPipeSmoker Před 2 lety +11

    I'm a fan of Sigma since the DP1 (which sadly suffered regularly from broken lens extension plastics and finally had to be retired) to a DP2M, then a SD Quattro (much use of Super-Fine-Detail mode on a tripod for almost-medium-format results) to recently having picked up a used fp in great shape for $1k US. I found a used MC-21 adapter so I can use my Sigma SA-mount lenses with full automation (though I usually shoot manual). I got a SmallRig cage for it (love the wood grip) and a used LVF-11 viewfinder for the LCD, which is wonderfully immersive. I had read the reviews and they were very mixed and pretty negative, but I *love* the camera. The low-light performance is spectacular, to the point that I usually just leave ISO in 'auto' and never use a flash - the total opposite of the SD Quattro! Photography should be fun, and with the fp, it is! I really enjoy your videos, Mattias.

    I love love Sigma cameras… I have a couple SD and DP Quattro bodies and lenses… the colors and more “organic” feel to the images is truly one of a kind … they very much remind of the CCD sensors in the Pentax 645Ds I used to have… limited to an extent vs some newer gear but absolutely gorgeous output if you stick to what they do best … stay at 1600 or below iso and enjoy the character of the images and rich colors that I’ve not seen on any other system aside from medium format. Well done Sigma! Please keep making these unique cameras!

    • @Biosynchro
      @Biosynchro Před 2 lety +1

      I'm exploring the Foveon system. From what I've seen, Foveon files are like Ektachrome whereas most sensors are like Portra. There are pluses and minuses there but I like it so far.

    • @danieleubank5645
      @danieleubank5645 Před 2 lety

      @@Biosynchro yes, sigma files from these do resemble Kodak film stock in a way. Colors are very saturated and rich, far more so than on other systems. I have all mine set to dng and although the file sizes are comparatively MASSIVE, as long as you have a computer than can handle or plenty of time on your hands to wait for rendering and all… the results are worth it. For me anyway. I just love how the files just look different than images from my Sony, Canon and other Systems. I will say I highly prefer the black and whites off my GR cameras though…

    Hi Mattias, i have been following you for a few years now, i love your videos and want to say thank you for keep doing them now that you have a mini you at home. I was one of those people asking you to review the FP on the comments of your other videos, i sold mine last december because of the flickering issue was too much for me. I hated not being able to freeze a moment under most artificial lights because i had to use a slow shutter speed, so i sold it and bought myself an S5, its bulkier but i love it, i also got lucky and found a cheap GM5 (around 250 usd), i think you would like it a lot, because its tiny but with a micro four thirds sensor and an electronic viewfinder (its not a great one but its better than the gm1 which has none and around the same size). Thank you again and can't wait for your pixii video.

    Thanks for this video. This camera is hard to review because a lot of people have already a (negative) opinion about it, without actually trying it...
    For me, the fp/L are a love or hate kind of camera.
    Cameras I recommend trying first, because if you like them, chances are you will adore them!
    I love my fp, so much so I sold my Lumix S1R (another underestimate beast) and kept only the Sigma and my GRIII... Have the 24mm f2, 90mm f2.8 and just added the 65mm f2 (didn't have time to try it yet). All gorgeous lenses !
    Another advantage of the electronic shutter, that nobody talk about, is that you can handhold shots at lower speed. I have a 100% keepers with the 90mm at 1/50 at 2.8, and still like 70-80% around 1/25-1/30... Not better than an IBIS, but already pretty good!
    High ISO is another great thing on the fp (didn't try the L). 25600 are darn usable ! The noise pattern is nice, with still lots of details and no annoying color noise.

  • @ahoyhere8113
    @ahoyhere8113 Před 2 lety +4

    Nailed it! As usual! So glad you focused on the stills aspect, this camera & its predecessor are seriously good and seriously underrated, even neglected in the photogosphere. Which is just your thing, right? 😂
    I have the original fp, bought largely on a whim bc I saw a couple tweets from a Japanese photog who managed to adapt a Jupiter-12 to it! The J12 is one of my favorite “film like” lenses and I had given up on being able to use it on a FF unless I shelled out for an actual Leica (maybe someday). Had the get the Contax mount version to make it fit but it does fit! And it’s beautiful, creamy, wonderful on it.
    Even the original fp is glorious for old glass, especially with the built-in corrections. It plays beautifully with my m42 and old Nikon lenses. It can be super sharp and contrasty but even if you want to edit it for a more vintage look, the RAW files are just so accommodating somehow. They hold up where, for ex, my Fuji RAW files start to become brittle. Not sure how to quantify that but it’s the way it feels.
    The L, with the 61mp, looks just incredible for $2499 new. The original fp (24mp) is unbelievable for about $1k used.
    The only issue I’ve had with the digital shutter is hand-held focus stacking and then the solution is just to take more photos. It bursts just fine.

      I'm glad you said that. I have some Pentax Spotmatic lenses which I like. I'm sure they're in no way automatic & have to be stopped down for a meter reading, but they are fine lenses, esp. their size. the 20mm for example is small, not huge as the one in Mattias's video.

    Many thanks for reviewing this camera, I've been hoping since the fpL came out that you'd review on or both of the fp cameras. I have two Sigma Art zoom lenses and love them, and also Sigma's business approach, honest and open communciations, and thei dedication to quality, innovation and satisfying niche market interests. I think you're right we should now add "made in Japan" to the list...
    One question: did you use it in crop mode? I'm curious about the fp-L crop modes... I read a while back that image performance is dependent on crop mode, and given my Sigma lenses are all APS-C lenses, this is a key factor for me. It's one reason I might opt for the new GH6 when I do decide to upgrade...

    I’ll add a tiny bit of info to something you said. It can shoot Cinema DNG 12bit raw externally in 4K, BUT, you can shoot Cine DNG 12bit raw in 1080P internally on the SD card ! And believe me it’s awesome too 😅 (it will fill up your 32/64 GB card quite fast though ;)

    • @amweber21
      @amweber21 Před 2 lety +2

      It can do 4K raw internally but in 8bit. Although I have an external SSD to capture 10 and 12bit, I usually end up using the 8bit as it lets me shoot completely free of any attachments. The 4K 8bit has amazing quality, and almost identical to even the 12bit if you do not push it to the extremes. I much prefer to use it over the 10bit LOG in my S1. Don't be put off because it is 8bit. It is almost like comparing an uncompressed 8bit TIFF to a compressed 10bit HEIF file. I know which I'd rather edit with. I can also get about 21 mins to my SD card which is usually enough for most things. The 1080p 12bit is also great, but be aware in the fp L you need to drop it to a 1.67x+ crop for the best quality. The original fp doesn't need to worry about this. The 4K mode likewise needs 1.3x+ crop for maximum quality ONLY in 12bit, but 10 and 8 bit can be shot in any crop.

It can be tricky handheld but I use my 24-105 OIS lens or small gimbal if I need it smooth. For personal use I mostly use it for still photography, more than any of my other cameras since, as Mattias said, it is just so fun to use. If you are interested more in video I'd still recommend the original fp. If you push more towards stills or 50/50 get the fp L.

    I was surprised by how small it actually is. Like it rivals my GX9. But there are no small lenses for such a big sensor. And it's missing all the features that I am used tho. Like EVF and built in flash. Which defeats the form factor once rigged again.

    A good review. I was able to test the predecessor, the FP, for a week and was really impressed by the image quality and the operation of the menu. However, I didn't buy it after all because I didn't find the display suitable for taking photos in strong sunlight. I would definitely like this folding viewfinder build in fixed in a large body which should also have a mechanical shutter. However, I had many distorted objects that were moving too fast for the electronic shutter. I would have also wished for an ergonomically better handle with a larger battery that is permanently installed in the housing. I'm very excited to see what the camera will look like with Sigma's new Foveon that should be ready soon. I hope it will be ergonomically more geared towards the needs of photographers.

    You have brought this camera back into my radar, or GAS disorder. The one thing that always confuses me about raw in the specs is the resolution discrepancy. It is a 6k camera. In stills the res is 6000x4000. In raw movie the max res is 4K DCI according to fw 4.0 spec. In my brain pure raw cdng means the the actual data read from the sensor pixel by pixel. My brain says, FF width image but 4K DCI recorded, so super sampled, wait pure raw pixel by pixel, how can the be, my brain explodes. OK my head is still intact, but the contradiction is still there. Does the camera create a pseudo raw, or is there something I am missing? If the camera creates a pseudo raw, I am ok with it, just confused. At first I thought, when the camera first came out that raw was cropped, but apparently not.

    Not a good idea to place the camera in a position with it resting on its large rear screen, like what you showed for a second or two in your video. I agree with you the Sigma FP - L is a great camera. This camera should be capable of 6K or 8K video, instead of only its current 4K video capability. I would have purchased the Sigma FP-L, only, I am no longer interested in acquiring a modern camera which is limited to only 4K video resolution. Sigma lost all of my potential interest in them as a whole; their Art lens lineup is a wuality assurance disaster, in daily use on DSLR this comes to light as the lenses being pretty much uncalibratable - they just don’t hold calibration at all! and the two i’ve tried are the ones they’ve been touted for - the 18-35 -1.8 and 24-105… Sigma is really saved for their faults in mirrorless- because lens consistency in focus is not necessary - but in a different light - it allows them to make really bad products look better - pretty
    much my experience with them! Modern Tamrron are far better built and better optical designs in any case!
