Everyone saying that she didn't deserve this doesn't truly understand how well she embodied that woman. She deserved that Oscar.

at 57 - she was the YOUNGEST acting winner that year. The others Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and John Gielgud were all well into their seventies. She was also the only acting winner who was present to collect her award.
She looked great here. Well-deserved and was actually overdue at this point. One of the finest American actresses. Her performance in "Interiors" is a classic.
How lovely and graceful of her to blow a kiss to fellow nominee joan Hackett who was in a wheelchair at the ceremony because she was dying of cancer
This award was four years too late...she should have won hands down for "Interiors", for she stole the movie away from everyone else in just three scenes (the introduction, wedding, and final scene at the beach)...a brilliant performance.

She was amazing in Interiors. That scene when she rescued the stepdaughter from drowning and resuscitated her back to life had me in tears.
Interiors is such a good Allen film I agree Ms.Stapleton should have won or been a tie with Jane Fonda Coming Home was good to

I met her outside the Martin Beck Theatre after her performance as Birdie in THE LITTLE FOXES. She autographed my program and after she and her little doggy exited into the streets of NYC. She was a grand lady.
Her reaction was priceless. Genuinely thought she was having some sort of seizure and then promptly gets lost on her way to the stage......comedy gold.
I loved her reaction when she realized that she'd accidentally clapped for herself.
She looks stunning here! Always one of my favorite actresses. She could steal any scene she was in, most notably in "Interiors." "Reds" is a tremendous film and she was totally deserving. Her speech was great because it was pithy, she thanked the appropriate people, and she was genuine, humble, and so nervous that she was funny. A lesson for these young starlets who have no idea how to dress, speak or be witty.

@@giovannyespinoza6013 I agree. Much as I loved Helen Hayes, I suspect there was a sympathy component to her win, as an upper respiratory ailment from exposure to dust in the theaters had just ended her distinguished stage career shortly before this.
How charming that she finishes by thanking her childhood crush, Joel McRae, which in fact did inspire her to pursue acting.

It was so good to see her win one before she died, as she was a fantastic actress. No matter where you saw her, on stage, and I had the honor of seeing her work on stage, or on television: that great performance in the Queen of the stardust ballroom was maybe better than her work in Reds, or wherever, she was a joy to watch.

Joan Hackett and Melinda Dillion both gave equally superb performances that year. Sadly, Joan passed away from cancer not long afterwards. She was marvelous in Only When I Laugh...

I have the honor of being in her special classes along with Pat Hingle and Tom Brennen someb of the best actors at the time , as a student at William Paterson University in 1974. May be I am the only Iranian student actor who can claim this. Most of the times she had her wine glass holded in her hand😅 at the same time she was such a brilliant asset to us all❤❤❤

The only acting winner who showed up that night. It's the last time only 1/4 appeared. It also happened 11 years earlier.

I believe that the Oscar to Maureen Stapleton was more of a career achievement or valedictory award rather than exclusively for her work in Reds. Fonda had previously won Best Actress Oscars for Klute and Coming Home; Elizabeth McGovern did excellent work in Ragtime, but the film was perceived as a disappointment; Hackett and Dillon were consistently good in everything, but this was Stapleton's year.

People pay respect. This award should have gone to the LATE GREAT Joan Hackett! She was fabulous in Only When I Laugh. She died a year after this! The Golden Globes will always have my respect for getting it right that year.

I remember wondering at the time what kind of drugs the academy was on to nominate her. Stapleton took all the critics' awards that year too so it was hardly a "valedictory" Oscar. Emma Goldman was a role quite unlike anything else she had ever played. She was generally wittier, more sympathetic than in Reds. That's why she won. That's why she deserved to. A highly intelligent, focused performance. Apparently you're yet another who thinks acting categories should have an age limit.

Now get this through your collective heads once and for all. Maureen Stapleton was one of the greatest actresses of her generation. I saw her on the stage and she knocked my socks off. More to the point, her Emma Goldman in Reds was a thrill to watch, too subtle for those of you who mistake what Elizabeth McGovern did in Ragtime for acting. The only other nominee who even came close was Melinda Dillon, so poignant in Absence of Malice. Maureen was nothing like her character, but prepared intensely for it, as all great actors do, emerging with a complete understanding of what an early 20th century anarchist was. By any respectable standards, hers was an extraordinary portrayal, the most acclaimed of the five by contemporary critics. She utterly disappeared into it. Forget Airport and even Interiors, but an early performance in a film called Lonelyhearts with Montgomery Clift went from plaintive to frightening. Goldman was the crowning achievement of her screen career. If you fail to see that, you should leave the evaluation of actors to more discerning eyes. Case closed.
The Channel TV - I need to see the movie "Red" and capture her performance. Thank you for expressing your opinion and will definitely watch this movie. In case - you are curious "subtle" performances are the best take for instance - Gregory Peck in "To Kill A Mockingbird" he was magnificent in that of Atticus Finch. My favorite movie of all times!

While I don't disagree Ms Stapleton was a very fine actress, it is only your very blunt opinion, so the case isn't closed 3 years on since you wrote this.
An irony is that the character of Emma Goldman figured in two of that year's prestige pictures, Reds and Ragtime. Co-nominee Elizabeth McGovern as Evelyn Nesbit (Ragtime) had a scene with Emma Goldman (played by Mariclare Costello), but it was deleted. It can be seen on the DVD. Stapleton was deserving for her performance in Reds. She was a plausible version of Goldman, bringing fire and intellectual rigor and a little humor as well. She stole all of her scenes, and the evolution of her relationship with Diane Keaton's Louise, from curiosity to disdain to respect, was an interesting subplot.
I think that she should have got the Ocsar back in 1970 for her role as Ines Guerro in the movie Airport. She was way better than Helen Hays.

Oscars host Johnny Carson would have Ms. Stapleton on "The Tonight Show" the following night, and she would wear the same dress and necklace. She made a funny line about wearing the same dress, "for what I paid for it, I'm trying to get as much mileage from it as I can", or something to that effect.

I find it interesting how supposedly no one knows who wins until the envelopes are opened, yet somehow the orchestra can instantly play the theme song to whichever movie won, even though there are multiple candidates.

I love Maureen. Glad she is an Oscar winner (even if for a less deserving part). But what's up with her apparent confusion here? She first seems caught off guard at applauding when her own nomination was announced. Then upon winning, seems to be asking Timothy Hutton how to get up to the stage. I don't get it. Was she known for being really quirky and eccentric?

Here- she's nominated for a flop movie . She probably didn't think she had a chance. I think she died only a few years later. She did a very strange movie called "Rivals" in 1972. It used to be on late night TV back in the early 1980s . Look for it if you like strange dramas filmed entirely in NYC in real apartment buildings. It's a "lazy Sunday couch movie".
