He popped the soccer ball and said “no more soccer”, because the movie he made before this was a massive international hit, about soccer. The world was hoping for a sequel, or anything, from him again, so he wanted to make it clear that this isn’t a sequel to Shaolin Soccer.

Stephen Chow is so good directing. This movie has so many details and references to other things, like the reference to "The Shining" or "Batman" when the axe gang claims for reinforcements, even using a reference to Danny Elfman score for Tim Burton´s Batman. Also he knows so well what he is doing in the action and fighting scenes. And the music is really good too. Its really brilliant and genious in my opinion.

Fun fact: The landlord and landlady, were the martial art big brother and sister (classmate) of Jacky Chen in real life during their teenage years. The landlady, Yuen Qiu, was in the James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun. She was one of the school girls who save Bond when escaping from the Karate school. Her husband the landlord was played by Yuen Wah, who was Bruce Lee's stunt double in Enter The Dragon. When you see Bruce doing the acrobatic tumbling and back flip, that was actually Yuen Wah.

17:26 that's weird, I still have this dvd and mine translated that as the landlord being like "I don't understand what you just said, say it again in Chinese" to the guy randomly speaking English lol, they even do a callback at 25:12 where once again the landlord can't understand someone's dying message

Kung Fu Hustle is in my opinion the best Kung Fu comedy of all time due to it's unique style and story. Stephen Chow hit his stride with Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. I really hope Shaolin Soccer is on your watch-list since it's a "spiritual prequel" in a way (as explained by Temp Sitch). It's also a Kung Fu comedy and top notch. It was a big hit which led to Stephen Chow getting twice the budget to make Kung Fu Hustle.

Bruce Lee Tribute: When the Landlady is seated between the Boss and his assistant, she faces the boss, and mimics the gestures Bruce Lee used while also facing a crime boss in Return of the Dragon. She wags her finger at him, then closes both fists, then just the right (while knuckles cracking can be heard), she jerks her head up, and the boss nods he understands, then she thumbs her nose, exactly like Bruce Lee.

The English subtitles are really bad. This movie relies a lot on its dialogue for humor, but the subtitles ruin many of the original jokes. They feel like a humorless recreation rather than a faithful translation. For example, the opening line "What are you looking at? Want the address of my tailor?" was originally "What are you looking at, never seen such a handsome boss?" Clearly, the latter is funnier.
