As a South African, currently based in Chongqing, China. I fully agree with you guys…the grass is not always greener on the other side.

The closer I get to retirement, the more self-inventory I take. One size doesn’t fit all. South Africa checks most of the boxes. So does Chicago (home), and Toronto. They all come with pros and cons. This is where prayer along with common sense comes in handy 😊 Love your insightful conversations!

A number of people who have moved or want to move to New Zealand, Australia etc., normally mention crime and goverment corruption and mismanagement as reasons. They have a point, but what I love about South Africa compared to some third world countries, is that there is great freedom of speech. Individuals and civil society groups can openly criticize government and take it to court, and our courts are very independent.
The abovementioned problems have to do with our ugly past, and emanate from the following:
    1. High level of unemployment, poverty and alcoholism.
    2. Many people who have been in government were freedom fighters, which means they suffered a lot during apartheid. They were totured, put in solitary confinement, and some of their comrades killed. So, even though they wanted justice for all, especially for black people, majority of them think South Africa owes them for their suffering. That is how corruption became endemic. But this does not mean that the apartheid government was not corrupt, it's just that there was no freedom of speech or free press during apartheid. The government picture is starting to change now, as evidenced by the last elections and new government of national unity.
    3. Because of our recent ugly past, it is unfair for people to expect South Africa to function like Australia or any other first world country. You can't have the majority of South Africans oppressed for centuries, and then expect South Africa to be like a first world country after 3 decades. However, a lot can still be done to improve South Africa, but it goes beyond practical interventions. Many people are still dealing with generational trauma, which is evidenced by domestic violence and other crimes.
    4. Because our politican leaders were assisted by other African countries during the struggle for freedom, they have, over the years, turned a blind eye on the massive illegal immigration into the country. This has excarcebated our problems of infrastructure deterioration and crime. But they seem to be waking up now.
    5. Among those who have left and not returned to South Africa, there are many of them that still say their heart is and will always be in South Africa. Though South Africans can be very negative and critical, they are generally warm and resilient. 😊😊

Hello Ronalda my beautiful friend. Thank you for sharing such a beautifully written response and for sharing such a thoughtful perspective on South Africa's unique challenges and strengths. It's true that while there are significant issues, the freedom of speech and the independence of the judiciary are commendable aspects that stand out. Understanding the historical context and the generational trauma that many South Africans continue to deal with is crucial. Although the journey to improvement is complex, the resilience and warmth of South Africans offer hope for a brighter future. Change is gradual, and recognizing these ongoing efforts and progress is essential.
Which is why we are so fortunate to witness the change❤

As South Africans we are very critical, but most we don't travel, when we travel that's when we start to appreciate this country. The standard of living and comfort is hard to find anywhere else with the price.
We knew America from TV and it has good PR it is only now that we are aware of real America

@Afrosoil11 Thank you for your comment! It's ironic that while Americans have the opportunity to travel abroad, many don't because we're often told there's no need-we have everything we need and are the best at everything. However, when we do travel, we often realize that America's "values" are "democracy" and can seem like a complete farce.❤

@@kaialeitham8202 interesting, Europeans have never stopped coming to SA... We are happy that Black Americans are starting to find out for themselves.... We also are learning as we travel...
Thanks for your perspective, the American channels like yours have made me appreciate my country more

I could be wrong but a lot of South Africans move to the UK because of ancestry visa's and stuff (SA being a previous British Colony and British family links etc). But Australia is the most sought after because its the closest in environment / weather / hemisphere etc. And our Rugby buddies! ;-) (I could be wrong though)!

@mariemieny5100 thank you for the comment. This makes complete sense to me. There is a very small group of Americans moving abroad for similar reasons, however, what they find is that quality of life tends to definitely be better than in the States, the present company included😅
