Did you see the child's head go down as soon as she made a mistake? When you're working with kids who have brain-based learning disabilities your tone of voice and demeanor should be soft, slow and encouraging! These kids are *extremely* sensitive about their disabilities. No need for the session to be like military training! The poor girl in this video is tense and miserable and obviously can't wait to get it over with. She's also intelligent because she was able to copy the teacher's hand movement after the first try. This video title should be changed to, "What it's *really* like in the classroom for kids with Dyslexia."
The tutor's tone was flat but not disapproving. We don't need to coddle, but I agree with you that we should be aware of how a child feels which is where building rapport with your student first is very important. Just like any relationship, once the child knows you, you can take a flat tone with little or no issue. I worked with children with behavior issues for years in a special education setting. You'd be amazed how quickly they learn you and adapt to your voice and cues. It's the teachers and assistants that took that high-hat tone all the time that the kids learned quickly how to play like a fiddle.
I thought the teacher was fine! She twice asked student to sit up straight. I think the table was too high or the chair too low. Wondered if her feet were dangling. It will make a student tired. Also the repetition is hard work. Also wondered if student was self conscious about being filmed
Good points. I remember being tutored for math and hated it as a kid. Most kids are not excited about spending extra hours learning something they feel they aren't good at. Would you agree? :) I'd be that kid flat out laying her head on the table and moaning for the misery to end. She did a good job. haha

Spanish has 24 phonemes, while English has 44.
It so the kid can learn and remember it. Its easier to remember how to sound out the word and wright if you had a sigh to remind you how to pronouns it.

Try to include the cars in the game. Copy the letter shapes on large paper and get them to drive his car round the letter/word. Has he been assessed for ASD/AHDH? Add pictures of cars to word cards for reading. Find reading books about cars. Order the alphabet and allow him to drive his car along the alphabet arc and say the letter names.
First, watching the girl read the words at the end was so awesome. Second, good job with consistency. Third, your haters need to stop worrying about your unenthusiastic tone and rightful need for an attentive student and be more worried at the crap job the public education system is doing for kids with dyslexia on the public dime. Thank you for learning how to teach these kiddos. But I guess the lesson learned posting this video is that unless you fart glitter, people think you're an Orwellian troglodyte.

Great Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you tried - Millawdon Future Ticket Trick (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for teaching children to read without the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my mate at very last got astronomical success with it.
100% agree - she's a drill sergeant. I hate this method! Kids need to be engaged, need to find that solution to that first. This kid wants to escape this torture situation and she will probably remember this as torture for the rest of her life.
I'm sure this has been done with the best intentions in mind, but just some feedback for the teacher /helper : I perceive boredom and a lack of authenticity in the way you express yourself. Kids can totally feel this and be discouraged by it. They need to feel you genuinely want to do what you're doing. If this is not it, I suggest you find what really lights you up, because I'm sure you're gifted and passionate about something. Perhaps you were just having a bad day... I also feel that this girl would be happier if she was being spoken to at an equal level. I feel there's a subtle but clear attitude of superiority over her, and again, kids can sense this and feel inadequate, which is the opposite of what we want. I feel sorry to see this video, but if course perhaps it's better than no help at all...

It's not phonics, it's phonological awareness. And teaching SIGHT words alone doesn't teach phonemic awareness. Children who strictly learn the sight word method fail at decoding words.
Teacher for dyslexic children here. Sight words are what kids get in school anyway. So if a kid is getting identified, they are going to need something else or we wouldn't id them. And, most importantly, phonics is an evidence based teaching method. You are describing whole language, which fails and frustrates children with these issues.

The method might be good, but the teacher was frosty. She was too fast, unfortunately there was not enough warm encouragement.
