Anyone can be excellently coached but only a performer of Irons' calibre can put his own signature on such inimitable, and difficult, songs. He makes strength out of his weaknesses. He rules -- he's Jeremy! "London Pride" is my favorite of his Coward renditions; he and the Proms audience unite as one.
He isnt a particularly good singer he admits that himself. He did sing two verses of "Be Prepared" but had to hand off the rest of the song to Jim Cummings
@@shrubby-ov4yw He's pretty good at singing-he wouldn't be doing shows if he wasn't would he? Actually, footage from the recording sessions actually revealed the Cummings only began singing at "be prepared for the coup of the century" (the last ten or so lines) because the line before it "you won't get a sniff out of me" made Irons's voice give out.
@@Piperthedoxie did say he admits that himself. He has said multiple times he has mediocre skill at singing. He was more at home in vocal long hand that actors like Noel Coward and Rex Harrison made more acceptable.
@@shrubby-ov4yw Tons of famous singers (Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Billie Eilish, etc) have said they're bad at singing, but that doesn't inherently mean they aren't talented because, well, they've made a career out of their voices through the music industry. He's definitely not a remarkable singer, but basically what I'm trying to say is he's better than what he cuts himself out to be.
Jeremy has been excellently tutored for this song, he places his voice exactly where this song requires, achieving perfect clarity of diction and carry power. No chance this time of the vocal damage he experienced singing "Be Prepared" for The Lion King movie some years earlier. Just delightful!
Que pena que o vídeo ficou ao final, meio prejudicado. Mas, valeu. Jeremy Irons como cantor, achei ótimo. De Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brasil 24.4.2023
Is your upload corrupted from 10:05 - 10:35? Or is it my download? Anyway... Coward was a funny blighter for sure, and Irons portrays him well. I love the wordplay in Mad Dogs.
Fun! Often he could not be heard above the orchestra which was too loud. It needed to be a tad slower, still keeping the atmosphere but he and the orchestra were out of sync! They outnumbered him! lol... Maybe they were a couple of rehearsals short!
And maybe your hearing comes up a bit short. A notoriously difficult song to sing, done to perfection, standing in the shoes of a Legend of the British Empire...
actually they were in sync and they orchestra was the right volume this song is quite hard to sing especially with good diction also jeremy is visibly nervous but he did a splendid job
@@mstrsims2 I actually remember meeting NC at the Lunt's house when I was like 2. Generally, they did not like kids over there. I was dressed in a little suit with a tie and white shirt, and he thought that was funny.
It was a video tape recorded on a broken VCR in 1999, then copied to digital about 5 years ago. The date of posting the video to YT is often not the same date as production. That is why the title says 1999. I think this video is the only one on YT of this performance. I'm sorry about the poor quality....it was the best I could make.
No sense of rhythm and he'd have been wiser to let the wonderful lyrics do the work rather than trying to "perform" them, but charmingly done on the whole.
Not only is he my fav on screen but now his sense of humor and in life singing is incredible.
His diction is absolutely perfect!
Well, not surprising , he is an actor, you know ....
❤öröm nézni. Öröm hallgatni!
Bravó
What a performance! A true genius! Noel Coward would be proud of him! Most enjoyable!
The best version since Noel Coward himself!
well done. Noel Coward had a similar type voice. March 26, 2023---50 years dead. RIP Noel
Bravo! Love all the little added touches like the wee jig in Mad dog's and Englishman. For a non-singer Jeremy does a great job.
Jeremy is divine.

Joyful tongue-in-cheek stuff put over with brio by this fine actor/vocalist.
Jeremy Irons singing -- I never knew he also had this talent on top of his illustrious acting career. Absolutely brilliant...I loved every minute.

My late mother and I adored Mr Irons in Brideshead and everything he acted in..I recently saw him in an excellent Law and order episode ...
Bloody brilliant!
Brilliant performance.
Very good. He looked nervous. . .but you really can't blame him for that with such lyrics delivered at pace, live!
My goodness -- I could never remember all the lyrics -- brilliant. Not nervous...pas du tout!
Very good. Excellent as a matter of fact. I never knew that he had a sense of humor. Thank You Noel Coward and Jeremy Irons
He’s British, of course has a sense of humour - finely tuned as we can hear.
love him dearly

He isn't dining it slowly. The huge audience can hear the words! Coward, in Las Vegas too it far too fast.
because it is an extremely hard song to sing and maybe because he isn’t a professional singer add that to being his first time doing that
Boris Karloff's son....the English sure have a weird sense of collective humour
Corrupted ending…
Why the poor video quality? This looks like it was filmed 11 yrs ago, not 11 months ago.

Always loved him, but to me he just doesn't get this really demanding material quite right.
He smokes? Not exactly good for his voice. hahah
Hi Diana, lovely to hear from you,,,, Perhaps the cigarette is part of the act. I wish you a dancing 2024 from Hunter VAlley Wine Country Australia.
