He almost did unseat a mobile QB as the starter but we all saw what happened afterwards which explains why he got shipped to Kansas City and had that run that was so bizarre you would have thought you were seeing something from another dimension. Fun video.
    This sent me into a rabbit hole of looking up the rushing stats of some of the bigger QBs from my childhood. I went with 6-3, 200 as a minimum. So people like Steve Bartkowski, Terry Bradshaw, Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning, Craig Morton and such. I also reached down to look up some of the more obscure candidates of that era, the likes of Joe Pisarcik Obviously, rushing stats do not definitively prove anything: there were probably some QBs who actually ran pretty well but just didn't, there were probably others who piled up surprising rushing totals because their O-lines betrayed them and forced them to run.
    While there were plety of people who were right where I would figure (e.g. Bartkowski, Ken O'Brien, Don Strock), there were some surprises. A few of the QBs from that era were smaller than I would have guessed, like Bob Griese. And a couple of the bigger guys I looked up had very solid yards-per-carry averages, like Bert Jones (5.8) and Bradshaw (5.1).
    One of the players I always remembered as little more than a stuck-in-the-pocket chucker, Steve Grogan, put up some solid rushing stats in his first five years: 1,739 yards, plus a 12-TD season. It's just that I caught him at the very end of that run, and by the time I was really getting into football as a fan, he was more of a platoon guy with a different quarterback.

      Jared Goff to me is the last true pocket passing QB to be pick first overall. Guys like Baker Mayfield, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence are what I refer to as the new age pocket passers. Meaning, they overwhelming play in the pocket, but they can make plays with their legs every now and then. Trevor is the most mobile out of the three. Jared Goff has good pocket awareness, but as soon as the pocket falls apart, the play is dead.

    From what I've learned as an Eagles fan.
    We had mobile QB's since I was born. Cunningham, Vick, McNabb, Hurts, heck even Pete, Wentz, and Garcia had mobility.
    But a statue got himself a statue built.
    QB's don't gotta be mobile, even today.

    Maybe because I only watched him play over his last 5 or 6 seasons but Steve Grogan seemed like he was running in slow motion all the time.

    really depends on how you define mobility. Peyton and brady both had really good footwork and had great pocket mobility...dodging sacks with footwork as opposed to top end speed. That is a big part of mobility....both slow runners but had elite footwork. Mobility is more about quick footwork than top end speed in my mind. Maybe I'm trippin.

    Drew Bledsoe was the slowest most immobile QB I’ve ever seen. He may have had a great arm but the man had no athletic ability whatsoever. He did everything slow, dropped back from center slow, had a slow windup and a slow release. Marino may have been your classic pocket QB, but at least in his younger days he had great small space athletic ability. He could really dance around the pocket and avoid the rush. Bledsoe had no such ability. If the rush got anywhere within 5 yards of him he was going down.

    It's not that there was a stigma against running QBs as much as it was they had to change the rules to where the defense couldn't hit the QBs or cover receivers. Once that happened QBs started to run the ball like crazy

      Brady is still better than those guys. He converted at a way higher clip than Cam and Hurts doesn’t even do a legitimate QB “sneak” he does the tush push.

    • @martino5742
      @martino5742 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@bananaman5668 yea he probably is better than cam tbh i remembered his dive and just assumed his size would make him unstoppable. Maybe he was more volatile. Tom was almost automatic. And i still count the tush push as a qb sneak cuz it isnt just a cheat code for anyone else. Everyones trying it, and nobody is as good at it as the eagles. I gotta believe Hurts’ 600 lb squat has something to do with that lol. Im sure hed be one of if not the best at the traditional qb sneak
