The green and red apparatus is called a lily controller. It regulates speed and shaft limits, to high in the shaft to low in the shaft. It will automatically put on the brakes if the set limits are exceeded. Most of them were made in Chicago Illinois .
My college course, "Geography of Minnesota", made 3 field trips during the semester, one of which was to this mine (and two other places that day). Really didn't have a whole lot do with Geography but riding this lift down to the mine and back up, and seeing it run in person, was the highlight of the whole course.
Whoo one big winding drum (winch) elevator machine. 600 HP don't need a counterweight. Already have two cabs east and west on going up, other going down.
The meaning of East and West is the actual Elevators. There is an East Elevator, and a West Elevator. One goes up, while the other one goes down. Those dials are showing you where they are in the shaft. Know what I mean?
@@MrEngineer20051 Thus works in the same principal as an aerial tramway one car goes up, while the other come down. In the case of these elevators the principal of a winding drum elevator with two elevator cabs. One side of the drum rope splay out for east car, other side for car west. With the open frame hoist motor, I presume it is DC powered by a an MG set or DC Drive.
That is cool to see actual machine working in a mine. This is the first video i have seen where a machine is actually working active. Cool
InstaBlaster...
Allis Chalmers really made some impressive equipment

Beautiful piece of engineering.
If you’ve never been in a mine, then the Tower/Soudan mine is an incredible experience that you must see.

I was there maybe 6 years ago. Super cool machine.
2:10 - the original THX deep note is born
Mad machinery!
Started my hoisting career on a very similar hoist,
Eine schöne Maschine. Danke fürs Teilen.

Cool
Now that an antique
I'm curious to see electric motor motor revolutions per minute 450 ?
Will it fit in my Honda?
Nope.
sure it will. just need a big hammer. ;)
Wow, what's the line speed?
The lift goes 10 mph but when your in the lift it feels like 50 mph
May you share technical details? Like speed and travel distance? What is mean of east and west?

@@TheTheo58 The principal is your pal.
Why most elevators in mineshaft uses machine like this instead of the ones based on the normal elevator we can see in high rise buildings?
They need to be able to lift the mined material out of the mine, and the more they can carry in one load, the more profitable the mine will be.
@@KingdaToro also extreme depth of the shaft necessitates very long cables and thus a large cable drum.
they are. same basic idea.
