  • Did you know that the current Rotring 800 twist mechanical pencil with the gold trim is a modern version of the original Rotring 600 Gold (aka the Rotring 600 KS or the Rotring 600 Twist)? In this video I compare a 2023 Rotring 800 pencil with an original from the early 1990s.

Really trying to love Rotring, but the fact that they stopped making the 0.3 and 0.9 really makes it difficult. Your videos are the gold standard-many thanks for putting these out!

Thanks! And yes the lack of the other sizes is still disappointing for serious pencil users

Great comparison video. I have a Rotring 600 0.7mm in black, and a 0.5mm in the newer blue colour they released. They are solid writing instruments built to last.

great video as always. can't believe they removed the lead hardness indicator from the new 600. at the same time i can't say i'm surprised though. i never use them either, but that's because companies don't usually list 4b :P

This video is incorrect. The lead indicator still exists on the Rotring 600. Amazon has them brand new. Nothing has changed.

The standard 600 does have a lead indicator the 800 does not

I have "some" 800's....and the one i use (EDC style) started is life with a problem. The twist mechanism is not broken...but is hard to operate.😢 The point is not ultra stable but i LOVE IT ❤😅😊

I've seen your video seven months ago about upgrading the refill in the LAMY Safari ballpoint pen. I've successfully modified the barrel of a LAMY Vista ballpoint pen (which is the same pen just clear) with an easy modification. I cut 0.5cm from an empty PILOT G2 ink cartridge to extend the length of the PARKER G2 refill. Placed that inside the barrel where the clicker button is. Then at the writing tip where the writing tip extends and retracts, I used a hand drill (manual with no battery or electricity) with a 2.8mm drill bit to enlarge the hole. The hole diameter is now large enough for the PARKER G2 cartridge to easily extend and retract. The plastic gave quite easily. Because there's no vibration or wobble from the manual drill, there's no risk of harming the delicate parts. I was able to have the pen fully functional in under five minutes. I also have a recent Reddit post below on this in Pens.

Nice job! I tried the same and cracked the tip on the Safari but sounds like you got it with the drill. Well done.

@@unsharpen Were you using a powered drill? The hum and vibration might've done it. It's often not easy to control a powered drill when working with delicate parts.

Very cool video. With all the advances in mechanical pencils over the years, I've strayed away from drafting pencils to those made specifically for writing and drawing, but there is still a writing instrument chic to vintage Rotring and their newer efforts. Excellent video. Consistent home runs on your channel.

Good call that while drafting pencils are super cool, they may not be as practical as a kuru toga (etc) for general use!

Hi, do you mind doing a video on how to ensure your pen doesn't leak? Which refills/pen types (other than fountain pen) are prone to leaking and how to minimize pen leaks?

Are the weights the same? I remember seeing on a reddit thread that they were at some point made with brass and that they may have changed materials. I could be wrong of course.

@@unsharpenincorrect the Rotring 600 does still contain the lead hardness indicator, the 800 does not have it

When I look at prices 600 is pretty expensive, 800 is freaking expensive, it's like 30 vs 55 dollars here. But if I understand it correctly 600 was basically downgraded today (no hardness indicator, fixed tip which does not retract) and 800 is what original 600 was? Well, if only hardness indicator was dropped, I'm using only HB or F anyways. I think I would prefer 0.7mm for softer leads.
