    I'm so glad you made this video because so many people have stopped using sliders or feel there's no need for a slider in 2019. It's kinda like being at a zoo each animal is different, each has their own characteristics Sliders, Jibs, Tracks, gimbals they all have great value and their different animals but their all needed at certain times. I love sliders and would never stop using them. Great work YCImaging love this .

    I love my slider, the one drawback is coverage, it’s like once you get the “keeper take” you have to be very aware to purposely move positions very often or else in post it’s like “all of this footage looks too similar and can’t use 5 shots that look the same in the edit” if you don’t move the slider around the room enough

    In regards to its ability to mount to multiple points (preferred over a center mount on a tripod): go to Modern Studio Equipment and pick up two “junior male to female 3/8” pins” and thread them up from bottom, this allows you to mount the rig into two combo stands (more stable, I use this rig with full cinema cam builds and it’s solid).
    Great video, appreciate you sharing.

    I think you kind of right. I don't think sliders are less common, I just think there's a huge saturation of gimbals.

  • @JasonLuongTV
    @JasonLuongTV Před 5 lety +4

    You touched on it a bit, but sliders and especially dolly's take a lot of space and time to setup. If I have the time and budget I don't mind, but when it's run and gun time I'll shoot handheld or with a gimbal.

    Always wanted a slider, its just not smart for me to purchase one at the moment. And I don't wanna go the cheap route with one. Locked down tripod shot and keyframe in post will do until then, I know its not the same but it still looks okay for the music videos I do right now. Solid video YC.

    Bro I been thinking about this very same thing. I just bought a Kessler crane pocket dolly on eBay used for cheap. You can get them for the low used. I retrofit 7.5lbs of barbell weights on the crank wheel and use it as a flywheel that creates a bunch of inertia which = super smooth movement.

    Totally agree. I have a Ronin M and a Harrope S1 slider. I used it for still life, products and some B roll of the facilities of a wine shop. Also, I shot B roll for a music video for which I built a little cyclorama, and wanted to recreate a dolly movement to film little objects against a white background, and also, for a location that was very small. I also attached the ronin arm to the carriage and I can control it from the remote.

  • @JonPais
    @JonPais Před 5 lety +1

    Nice video. I've got the iFootage Shark and Edelkrone Slider Plus. I really enjoy doing parallax movements (slowly rotating camera to keep subject centered while moving camera down rails), but it's super hard to do smoothly manually. That's why I've toyed with the idea of getting a motor. But like you say, all that setup time!

  • @LangstonBall
    @LangstonBall Před 5 lety

  • @kerbosee
    @kerbosee Před 5 lety

    I think generally a lot of people think about gimbals as the new version of a dolly because in the mind they imagine tracks and a big dolly and the whole setup being so old and cumbersome. But nothing superseded one or the other. They are all tools. It's easy to get used to using something and be complacent with your workflow, but understanding certain tools' benefits and being skilled at using any of them will allow you to tell stories and create much more striking and unique imagery. Gotta be versatile and try new things and combinations of things. 👍💪

    I have both a manual slider and Ronin M for my 5D MKIV, and to be completely honest the Ronin is soooo muchhhh workkkkk. I literally dread it because I know it just drains me and my back, but the smooth shots are so worth it. The slider I would use more, but I can see small bumps as I slide down the rail or I see movement speed inconsistencies which are hard to replicate at the same speed for each shots

    I just shot a music video a month ago all on a slider and a tripod. I use my gimbal about 50% of the time, and mainly for my super wide shots when I need to get around alot. Many people's stuff is looking the same. All head shots, upper torso shots, not enough wide angle stuff, not enough close up, no treatments. Alot are hiding the cinematography with trippy effects. To each his own.

  • @markwaltersmedia6956

    For one of my music videos I was filming in a fairly small room in my apartment. We had a set ready and everything. I wanted to make some movement but I was using my gimbal and you're spot on about the enclosed space thing. That's one of those situations where having a slider would have been perfect. It would have saved a lot of pain in my back. Also going back into editing a lot of the footage looked like trash because there was inconsistent shake and it sucked. Gotta make some mistakes to learn!
