- This is my re-edit of 'Space Oddity' from the 1973 TV special 'The 1980 Floor Show'.
The broadcast version of this song began with 30 seconds of library footage of a rocket launch playing over the intro. Later in the song, there were two further lengthy cutaways to NASA footage taking us out of the performance. Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it feels dated now, and I know I'd rather be watching Bowie and Ronson play than looking at stock film of a satellite in orbit.
So I've ditched all the 'space' footage and restored this to a pure performance film. I've used out-takes footage to fill in the blanks and matched it with the better quality footage taken from the actual broadcast.

Mike Garson (pianoman) quote: "This was a memorable performance for me because Space Oddity had no piano originally and I was still the new guy on the block at this performance. I wasn't sure if Ii should add so much piano at the beginning - and good old David was so accepting of all my contributions. During the main part of this song I switched to the mellotron which sounds like strings. What a great performance! And then there's Mick Ronson - the unsung hero. So handsome, such a great singer, a phenomenal guitarist and friend..."

What a damn good performance! They were the real deal. Playing a song live without some studio track for a song like that, and making it sound the same. Unbelievable.
that would be unheard of in the 70s we had so many tallented instramentalists in all rock bands.;IT WAS THE NORM .ITS CALED TALLENT AND WORK.

As a kid, stayed up late to record this show simulcast on FM record. Cassette tape. By far this is the best version of this song that Bowie ever did. A fantastic show.

I saw “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars” at the Hollywood Palladium. It was a few weeks after the Santa Monica show. Blew my mind to see it again! Wow. Thanks so much! It’s like reliving the experience. Truly Great Show.

I was at a party and found a TV upstairs to watch this. Lots of people downstairs playing air guitar to Smoke on the Water. I was in my own world with all of you in your own worlds. Beautiful.

No, I just got into Bowie about three months ago. I suppose it takes time to truly understand his beauty and talent. Bowie is a very unique artist and there will never be another artist out there with as much creativity as he had..This is all opinionated though.

I remember when this broadcast in the US for the first time as a Midnight Special exclusive. It was so awesome! I was a teen who had only recently at that time become a Bowie fan which I had to sort of keep under my hat living in the Houston area.

I can barely contain my excitement thinking of what you might put together from the hours of rehearsals and out-takes from this TV special...
Thank you. I know what you mean. It's not a song I listen too very often due to over-familiarity with it, but I like this performance of it. He performs it with such relish. I also like his benign smile over the audience at 18 seconds (which was not in the original). Looking forward to sharing my future edits with you too : )
