    I appreciate everyone trying to help me out with keeping my pans in place, but the problem is... they are wonky. The metal is MUCH taller than the pans and aren't able to slip over the edge to hold them in place. (Hard to see in an overheard shot, but trust me.) No amount of "pushing them forward" is going to fix this.
    Thanks for trying anyways!

      Kasey Golden awwwwww, that's sad!! 😢 I would contact schmincke for a replacement insert since they have high quality standards. Even if you didn't buy direct from their site they should want to fix any mistake with their products. Especially since the price is such that you should be receiving a top quality product no matter what. 😅

      Watching this made me super curious how they stay and I ended up finding a video that shows how to snap them in place, czcams.com/video/tNw8BvZLHtQ/video.html. She shows it at about 9:30, but it is a different set so the pans may be slightly larger? If this doesn’t work I agree with the other reply in this thread!

      I got a similar set from Mungyo a few months ago and encountered the same problem with the pans sliding around. I ended up buying a few a extra empty halfpans from the art store and slotting them in on the side to sort of 'fill out' the row and hold everything in place through friction, and it's worked well for me. As an added bonus, I got to fill one of the extra pans with Payne's Grey, a colour not included in my set but that I really liked. If you did the same, you could make a Sap Green pan on top of fixing your sliding problem :)

      @Tombraidertussi Před 6 lety +62

      Hey kasey :) i have a schmincke set myself and solved the problem without sticky tape or anything. You have to remove the pans, then bend the metal forewards and then squish the pans back in again. The easiest way to put them in is if you put the pan at the non-bendy side of the metal in first an then at the side with the bendy metal. Then there should be a click sound and it shouldn't slide around anymore. It's just a way to bend the metal a bit more as if the pans are still inside and for me it worked. If you want, i can make a little video showing it :)

    • @Erdhenne
      @Erdhenne Před 6 lety +9

      That is really funny. I do have the same set. ^^'
      If you place them directly where they are intended to be and bend the metall clips really far to yourself and put the pan first at the lower part in and push the upper with a little force you should hear a click and it holds it in place.
      The only time I had pans rattling around was when I included smaller pans from Winsor and Newton.
      Really sad to hear that you seem to have a defect pallette.

    Schmincke Horadam is the best!!! Here in Germany, it is the most popular I think :).
    A tip for you to keep the paints in place: Bend the taller side of the metal first (the opposite way, not the way you did), then put the paint on the shorter side, then push your finger and "click", the paint stays in place :D. I hope I explained it well :D.

If you want something up from there, Van Gogh is the best student grade paints and performance is superb (plus they're pretty vegan)

    Oh I have the same brand just a tad bit smaller! You are supposed to use the metal things that sticks up to make the colors stay in place! The color blocks needs to be in a angle so the longer metal piece have the fold against the white rim of the color and the bottom of the block supports itself with the smaller metal thing at the bottom. (the best that I can describe how I set my colors) So you will have a small triangle of space between the color block and the metal box's floor.
    (Also english is not my first language so sorry about some errors!)

    I started with the Artist's Loft set as well, and wow, that was really bad quality. I never really loved watercolor as a kid, I preferred colored pencils and markers, but in my visual arts class we started a watercolor unit, using and older Crayola set (the old Crayola sets are VERY good quality for the price) and I kinda fell in love. I bought the Artist's Loft set, and loved the colors, even though the quality was awful. I used those for about a month before my mom found an old set of Winsor & Newton Cotman tubes, though two were mostly dried, and a few others were oddly liquidey, it worked for me. A few months later, around Christmas time, I got a Winsor & Newton Cotman set for Christmas, and using so extra money I had saved, I bought my first Daniel Smiths. I got the Daniel Smith Fine Essentials set, and two other tubes. I also ordered two Schmincke tubes on Jackson's, which just came in a few days ago. I'm in LOVE with my Daniel Smiths and Schminckes, and I don't know why I just felt like sharing that. :)

      @@GreenGleem for very cheap student grade that performs better than prang, try "Superior" watercolor. You can get the basic 12 for $7 in a metal pallette. However, if you can spend a bit more, try Pretty Excellent brand, they're hard to find, but you can find them on wish for sub $20 for a 24 color set- look for a pink or aqua tin with a parrot on it. Chances are it won't list the brand name on the listing. If you have 30ish to spend, you can get the Daniel Smith essentials set, but you'll need a pallette for it. If you have more money, I'd start looking at the m. Graham sets, I like them better than the horadam.

I love Schmincke and hope you were able to get the pans to click in place per what people have mentioned (the backing is supposed to be higher and you clip them in from the short edge first, someone linked my video already so I won't spam you with it again 😜). For what it's worth, I have heard the same claims about QoR but have *not* experienced it to be true. Mine are not any less vibrant when you rewet them, or at least not more so than any other brand. Tubes in general will always be more vivid, but I like you way prefer to work from pans so I dry them in pans regardless. Enjoy your new paints!!

    The trick with keeping the watercolors in the metal trays, is to take them out, and put the metal clips back to its original state.
    After that, you put the lower edge of the color "box" on the longer metal holding, push the box into there so the other lower edge gets clipped by the clippers.
    Sounds pretty weird, but worked for me.

    Heyo! I love all of your videos, and I can not thank you enough for all of your thoughts and opinions and art! I've been following you since early last year when I first discovered your channel, and you have been my biggest inspiration-I mean WOW! I started watercolor because of you, and I started off with this gross cheap brand called "Pennelli" and it says "Quality Artist Supplies" on the front, but I'm pretty sure that's kinnddaaa a lieee...? Lol, anyway, I went to Kansas for Christmas (2017) and I spotted a little art store there where we stopped by. That place was AWESOME, and I hadn't seen a lot of the art supplies before as we apparently don't have any dedicated art stores in my hometown here in New Mexico. So my mom said I could look for something for a Christmas gift, maybe, and so I stumbled across the paints and multimedia area. I remembered you when I was fumbling through the watercolor sets, and found something that looked compatible for my possible expectations. It was a set of 24 watercolor tubes under the brand name of "Royal Langnickel" and it was about $11. I asked my mom and she agreed to buy it, but she was trying to leave before I remembered I needed some watercolor paper and some brushes. I picked out one tiny $3 brush that I absolutely love from "Princeton" and this oddly-shaped long watercolor book-thing from "Strathmore" (I dont remember the price for it) and then went up to purchase the stuff. I got to try it out, and OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE THEM!! They are such high-quality for their price, and I highly highly HIGHLY recommend them :3
    Thanks, Kasey!

    I used to work at an atelier near me as a student job, preparing artworks, doing sketches and occasionally painting with watercolors.
    Before that I never used "good" watercolors. The first time I used schmincke watercolors in that atelier, my jaw literally dropped because of how satisfying it was to paint with them. When I had to leave them (by the way, it was the best job I've had until now), because they couldnt afford me as an employee (that was during the crazy covid times and no one had money to buy art), I bought some other watercolors that weren't as expensive. Schmincke is actually the top of the line, THE best watercolor available. At least according to most professionals.
    Also, take the pan out and pinch the tin holder together rather firmly then replace the pan by clicking it into place. The metal holder should hold it snuggly and they won't shift around. For some reason it isn't common knowledge and people resort to sticky tack and other such unnecessary nonsense. 😉 hope that helps! 😄 love your vids!!!💖

    To get the pans to stay in without using any tape or sticky stuff, you take the pan out and bend the metal tab slightly in, then place the pan against the bottom lip and push it down, it will "Click" past the top tab and that will lock it in place, no sticky stuff :)

    Schminke has been my go to for years. I tried M. Graham this year and I just can’t stand how sticky they are and I find them difficult to control although the color is sublime.
    I don’t know who made up the rules that says that panned paint are plein air, but paint is paint and you work with what makes you comfortable. If you are actually making money off your work the your paper, your brushes, and your paint are the most important things you work with in that order. My opinion and every teacher I’ve ever had.

    Fill each row with another half pan. All this style of palettes are dived for the half pans while wrapped and most have room for another half pan per row. You can even fill the bottom row with full or half pans. I know a lot of artists that have a full pan of white gouache for highlights.

  • @kamaete2794
    @kamaete2794 Před 6 lety

    i dont know if you found an answer yet, but to get the pans to stay in place, you have to pop the pans in, not bend the metal around them. first, take the pan(s) out, bend the metal tab down (towards the smaller metal tab), then insert the pan by fitting it under the shorter side and then clicking it into place under the taller metal tab. i hope that makes sense? i think denise (in liquid collar) explains and demonstrates how to do this in her schminke akadamie christmas set review (8:45) and i think in the first schiminke review!
    i love these swatches it's a very calming thing to watch someone do!

    You probably won't see this Kasey, but I didn't experience a loss of vibrancy when i put my QOR High Chroma tubes into pans. If you do ever decide to, make sure you thoroughly shake the tube before pouring, and stir the paint once it's in the pan to avoid the gum arabic or in this case aquasol from drying on the top or not mixing with the pigment properly.

    To get the pans to remain in place, the manufacturers intend that you gently bend the piece of metal at the back of each pan over the top of the pan. The small spaces in between pans are meant to keep your paint from being contaminated from overspill from the one next to it. Most people ignore this so that they can squeeze in an extra pan. Keeping the spaces will save you from wasting paint. And, as you say, artistic quality paints are expensive, particularly this brand. There is another trick that I use and it will also work in the lightweight plastic palettes they sell on Amazon with cheap paint in them. Get some "Blue Tack, " ( SP?) adhesive strips and make small dots for the bottom of each pan. This will hold them safely in place and make them easy to remove should you need to replace a used one or change one out for a different color. I hope this helps you.

    The reason for the Schmincke method or swatching is it's suppose to show you how the watercolor "blooms", the nature of making the pigments means that try as we might we can't make all colors exactly the same. So you do this to make yourself a reference of not only how the pigment looks but how it behaves.

    To keep the pans in place, take them out of the tin, and bend all the little metal things forward. Then press the edge of the pan under the curl and shove it in. It stays in place a lot better than bending them forward after placing them in.

    Kasey, the little metal teeth, you bend them to keep the pans in place. Take the pans out, bend the little metal tooth in slightly and then put the pan back in. You don’t need sticky tack or magnetic dots, you just have to bend the metal teeth in. Also it’s so satisfying when you do……

  • @MarcosG000
    @MarcosG000 Před 6 lety

    You don't need tape or sticky things to keep the pans in place. It's simpler than that. You only have to take off the pan, and bend in the metal piece to the point where you can hear a click noise when you put in the pan again. You don't have to bend it too much, only what needed :) Enjoy your magestuous palette!
